Various Rants

And so we come to the last day of the year. **yawn.** New Year's has never been a big thing for us, and I am honestly often cynical about the holiday to begin with. It's just one day changing to the next. What's the big deal? The new year never feels any different immediately anyway. One of Mom's childhood friends actually said she liked New Year's better than Christmas, which I absolutely cannot comprehend. XD; If she was Japanese or from some other culture where New Year's is the big family holiday instead of Christmas, or if she was from a background that didn't really celebrate Christmas, then I could get it. But since she wasn't ... **just shrugs in confusion.**

Last year was probably the only time I will ever get excited about New Year's. Ohmygosh, has it really been a year since I saw a Rockapella lineup in person for the first time? And I still haven't blogged about the second time, way back in August. But it was definitely one of the most squeeable, happy times I've had.

... And seriously? Téa scaring off the then-bullies Joey and Tristan in the very first YGO manga is cool, no doubt about that. X3 But overall, I'm annoyed far more by stuff she's done in the manga than I am by anything she's done in the anime. That whole thing where she and Yugi were at the amusement park and she kept trying to get Yami Yugi to come out ... blurgh. I actually didn't buy that volume for years, even though it has part of Bakura's introduction in it, because the amusement park story annoyed me so much. I mean, jeepers. She started getting other people in trouble, like screaming that the guy who invited her to go on the slide was a pervert. (And who knows, maybe he really was, but he hadn't done anything and she was only trying to get Yugi to think she was in danger. -___-;) And then when she really got in danger, she just kinda shrugged it off when it was over. I would have liked to have seen Yami Yugi yell at her for putting herself in such a position, or for her to apologize, or *something.* Yami Yugi didn't know what she was really doing, but he saw how reckless she was acting after the news of the bomber went out. He should have scolded her.

Years later, the whole episode in the manga annoys me just as much or more. XD; But I finally bought it for the Bakura squee.

In the anime, the only time I was ever annoyed by her was when she stuck her tongue out at Mai during Yugi's duel against Weevil and kept prattling about friendship. That was the *only* time *anything* she said about friendship got on my nerves, and it was *only* because she was being immature about it. She's still my favorite female character in the series otherwise. (Though for the manga, that title might go to Ishizu.)

And while I'm at it, the way Yami Yugi behaved in the first six/seven manga is *creepy.* All those Shadow Games and the illusions of people seeing weird things happen to themselves.... Sometimes he seemed sadistic and not much better than the other Yamis, considering what he was doing. But of course, motive is important, too, and when that's taken into consideration he's still above the other two.

... But I kind of picture Yami Bakura being a dark avenger like that eventually in my verse. He's trying to be relatively good, and deal out justice, but that's the whole problem---he's taking justice into his own hands. And he has a very selective justice, of course; he cares what happens to Bakura. And their cat. And that's pretty much it. He's not a great deal interested in humanity or their problems. XD;

Ah, Yami Bakura.... How I love writing for him. Classic, dark anti-hero in my verse. Though, actually, where his mortal life as Thief King is concerned, he seemed to start out as at least somewhat an anti-hero, seeking justice.... Then Zorc came in and he went crazy and was an all-out villain. ;___; (Though he acted pretty villainous during the fight with Mahado, I know. And of course, seeking the Items to open the door and forge a contract with Zorc ... **shakes head.** Bad, bad, bad. But it is understandable, at least, why he would feel like the Items should belong to him.) It looks like he started getting really bad off as soon as he got the Millennium Ring, so it possibly wasn't even his idea to ride through Egypt causing mass destruction. o.o He totally snapped. (Not that he wasn't a nutter before that.) But he's the most ambiguous character in the whole series, and with the Zorc mess, it's impossible to know how much was his idea and how much was Zorc's.

... And I totally love the scene in the manga where he says he cares about Bakura and then delivers a penalty game on the mean gym teacher. XD; I guess it's awful to like that, but ... **squee! It's canon protective/revengeful-for-Bakura's-sake Yami Bakura. XD;** It's been one of my favorites ever since I saw the Shounen Jump issue with that chapter in it.

I still wonder what happened about Bakura's hair, though, if it really is a rule at Domino High that boys can't have long hair. o.o Or was the gym teacher just making it up because he didn't like Bakura? If so, did he agree to let it go out of secret gratitude for Yugi rescuing him from the Monster World game piece?

True about the new year not feeling any different... And that is surprising about your mom's friend. **blinks** I don't even celebrate the religious aspects of Christmas, but still adore the Christmas season because it always means some sort of family reunion. X3

**hugs Rockapella** A bunch of awesome guys. X3

Bleah at Téa and her wanting to see Yami Y that badly. -.- **was annoyed with her there, too** And yeah, Yami Y did seem to be a bit sadistic. Also, he didn't allow Yugi to remember what was going on during those Shadow Games **remembers Yugi says that volume 5 was the first time he remembered the day's battles.** I think Yugi may have had an influence on Yami Y for being less sadistic...

Yay Yami B caring for Bakura! X3 Hmm, I think the gym teacher just hated Bakura, because he never seemed to give *Yugi* a hard time about his hair (at least, as far as we could see...)

Ooh, and volume 2 of YGO R... *___* Seto is awesome in that. And I really like Gekko. X3 Bandit Keith, however, is quite the opposite. XD; (Why the heck would he say that Yugi killed Pegasus? He never even had that much of a grudge against Yugi; I always thought his problem was with Joey...)

**nodnod.** Christmas is an awesome family time. X3 And I've been curious, do you use Christmas trees or any kinds of decorations that would work for the more secular aspects? Or do you pretty much just give gifts?

X3

Oh, Yugi definitely had that influence on Atem. ^^ That's one of the major, yet more quiet, themes in the series: how they learn from each other. During the Ceremonial Battle, moreso in the anime version but mentioned in the manga too, it's told how Yugi taught Atem kindness and compassion. It's touched on several times earlier too, like when Atem comments after the battle with mind-controlled Joey that Yugi has shown him that kindness is the greatest strength of all. X3

Maybe the gym teacher was just jealous because all the girls loved Bakura. LOL.

Seto is totally awesome. X3 Mokuba hacking into things was awesome, too. (Though overall, I've never cared for him much in the manga. He's mostly so obnoxious and sometimes kind of bratty.) And I love Gekko. That's so horrible and sad, what his brother did to him. ;___; But it's also horribly sad and frightening what Gekko said happened to his brother. o.o

Bandit Keith was just ... ugh. He honestly seemed surprised when he was told Yugi didn't kill Pegasus, though. o.o So maybe he actually thought it was true. That was the impression I got, anyway.

One interesting thing to note: *no one* has mentioned that Keith is supposed to be dead, as the fandom claims he is. I've always said there's no proof of that, since what he saw in Duelist Kingdom was an illusion. The only way he could have died would have been if his body was so convinced he was being shot in the head that it reacted accordingly.

X3 We have a little fiberoptic tree, but that's about it... My sister put up a huge tree and lights, but that was more for the kids. ^^ **was stunned to hear that some school district somewhere banned any and all Christmas decorations, even secular ones, because of fears of offending non-Christians.** Um... whut?

Tue. ^^ There was one time during the Orichalcos ar that bugged me though... After the rooftop duel fiasco in Duelist Kingdom, when Yugi said that he wasn't sure if he could trust Atem again, Atem said during the battle with Mai, "I vow never to go against your wishes again." But he still played the Seal during the duel with Raphael, even after Yugi repeatedly pleaded for him not to, breaking that vow... And that was one of the times in the anime that Atem really annoyed me...

LOL. XD **imagines Elliott being surrounded by the girls** That would be interesting... XD

(True...). ;___;

Yeah, maybe... But I can't help but think he just wanted to rile people up by saying that Yugi did it.

True; I found it hard to believe that the illusion would be that powerful, too...

[identity profile] insaneladybug.livejournal.com 2009-12-31 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
**nodnod.** Fiber optic is pretty. X3 That is just so *stupid.* And in their attempts to "make it better" for others, they take away the free agency of everyone who likes Christmas decorations! Things like that are really a sore spot for me. They should stay out of people's business! The people that don't like Christmas decorations don't have to do anything with them. -.-

Oooh. ;___; Of course, my first thought is, did they have that conversation in the original? If it's dub-only, I'd say it wouldn't necessarily count; it only would if you wanted it to. But in any case, him playing the Seal when Yugi begged him not to was horrible. A lot of people don't like that arc because they think Atem was OOC. I'm not sure that he necessarily was; it just showed a darker side to him.

Maybe he wanted to get at Joey by saying it?

**nodnod.** Supposedly Keith was revived to take part in the project, says Wikipedia. But as long as no one's expressing surprise in canon, I say he never died.

[identity profile] rose-of-pollux.livejournal.com 2009-12-31 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
X3 Totally. -.-

Hmm... I'm not sure if it's dub-only; I'll have to look into it. But yes, Atem was definitely darker.

Maybe...

...I'd like to think that, too, unless it's later going to be revealed that Keith is Solid Vision, too. -.- Knowing Yako, it's possible...

[identity profile] insaneladybug.livejournal.com 2009-12-31 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
A Solid Vision Keith wouldn't explain why no one's surprised to see him alive, though....

[identity profile] rose-of-pollux.livejournal.com 2009-12-31 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
...Ooh, yeah, good point...

[identity profile] ladyamberjo.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Is dub-only! In the original it was more a matter of Dark Yuugi/both Yuugis thinking ahead to the duel with Pegasus and paying little to no attention to the duel with Mai until it was almost-too-late. Mai was not pleased.

But yes, Dark Yuugi was a sadistic nut-job in the early stuff (insanity and death-by-fire! Wheeeee!)

*slinks back to the couch of perpetual illness*

[identity profile] insaneladybug.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspected it, but I'm glad to have it confirmed! X3

I guess in addition to his memories in pieces in the Puzzle, his mind was in pieces too! XD; It must have been so weird and surreal inside the Puzzle, and then suddenly BAM! He was in a strange new world filled with creeps.

Oh no! Evil sickness!
