Yay, Western books!

So I was out today and browsing the books at Wal-Mart. They don't have very many, of course, but I was hoping maybe possibly I'd find a copy of the original book of The Virginian, since there's been some new editions made. I'm totally planning to give B&N some business by buying it there, because that's something I want that they might actually have.

Anyway, Wal-Mart does have a few, newly-written Western novels. And some of them sound pretty interesting. When I picked them up to look at them, I felt the same strange burst of nostalgia/Western love from that latest off-the-wall dream.

I have decided I need Western books in my life.

Books no matter what are wonderful. I got a kindle fire and loads of books for Christmas. I love a few authors and I have a set of all their books. Horror and Detective that has something different in them. One is police women in 2060 and another is the FBI special unit of psychics

Hope you find more you enjoy. Before the kindle I spent a lot of time at 1/2 price books.

Indeed, they are. I haven't had a lot of time for reading lately, mainly because I'm often writing instead. But I'd love to get back to reading more.

Those sound like some neat books! That's great to have favorite authors to follow. :) I have a couple, too.

Thank you!

Up to this time, I have only read during the breaks from school as with my student load I was so busy making sure they had their work corrected for the next day.

I also do a lot of writing but have slowed down some so I can read. In the fall I will have some time to read, so will enjoy the books and do writing also.
Keep on read! (my favorite thing to tell my grandkids.)

That's definitely understandable.

Awesome! It's always nicest when there's a good amount of time for both.

Book browsing is always a must! :) Hope you manage to find yourself some good Western books.

Thank you! I hope so too.

Ah, that's awesome! The Wal-Mart here doesn't have any Westerns that I've seen (of course, I'm on the East...).

[identity profile] insaneladybug.livejournal.com 2013-07-11 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that could be the reason, I suppose. Although I thought Westerns were generally pretty popular everywhere. :)

Only Western I read was True Grit but I did enjoy it.

If you have any recs I'd be interested in hearing them. I've actually been watching quite a few Westerns because of De Kelley (who was in quite a few before Trek) but my experience with Westerns is mainly the more famous ones.

[identity profile] insaneladybug.livejournal.com 2013-07-13 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I've wanted to see that (both movie versions)!

I don't have any idea on Western books, but as for Western series, I don't think I've met one I don't like. I've watched quite a lot of both the more famous ones and obscure ones as I track my cuties from role to role.

... Oh, I do hate Laredo, though. Everybody just acts so stupid in it. But I love or at least like pretty much everything else, from The Virginian and Gunsmoke (when they're serious) to Tales of Wells Fargo, Law of the Plainsman, and a bunch of others that probably most people have forgotten about.

I do get a little annoyed at how it seems like every time I watch Rawhide the villains are one-dimensional and/or quite thoroughly evil. I don't know if it's just my bad luck to keep stumbling on those episodes or if that's the way their villains always are. I prefer three-dimensional villains who still have some semblance of humanity.

I would probably recommend The Virginian the most. Excellent series. With 75-minute episodes, there's more time to develop the story and the characters. And The Wild Wild West is just such fun! There's awesome friendship between the main characters, intriguing (and cute) guest-stars surrounding them, and steampunk spy and crime stories.

As for True Grit, I've seen both movies and read the book. I like both versions but in this rare case I prefer the newer version, it's closer to the book. The John Wayne version has a cuter ending but in that version he is the main character. In the book and new movie, Mattie is the main character which I prefer.

I have not seen any TV series but if I can find them I will watch a few. Right now I am looking for more stuff with De Kelley (and like I said he was in a lot of Westerns). He was actually in 2 episodes of the Virginian, probably playing a villain since that was what he mainly did before Star Trek.

The Wild West sounds like something I would like.

Yeah, that's what I've heard about it. In one way, I think I'd prefer the happier ending, yet on the other hand, I remember kind of liking the darker one too.

Oooh, interesting. If either of his episodes are from season 6 (or the first half of season 1) I have them and could have a look.

The Wild Wild West is sooo much fun. There's episodes on Youtube. Season 2 is usually my favorite, although I like episodes from all seasons. Season 2 has a lot of fantasy/supernatural stories.

He was in season 2 episode 14 and season 1 episode 15.

But since you have a lot of Westerns look out for him since he appeared in quite a few.

He was also in an episode of Perry Mason from 1961 (since I know you like that). :)

I have season 1 episode 15! I'll check it out when I can.

I don't own many, actually; I rent them or watch them on MeTV or YouTube.

Yes, I know the Perry episode quite well. :) The Case of the Unwelcome Bride, from season 5. He has a pretty substantial role, even moreso in the uncut version.

Hi Ladybug!

Completely off topic, but this was your latest post so I thought I'd use it for this. I know you don't read too many fics, but I thought this one might amuse you. The entire series was sort of spoiled for me by it, but it was so amusing I hardly care, and I think the author might be onto something involving future episodes (not that they try and predict what will happen in as-yet unaired episodes. You'd have to read to understand. xD). I'd have sent this in a message, but I can't make links in them. :D

[identity profile] insaneladybug.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL. That's very interesting. A bit confusing, how it jumps from scene to scene all over the series, but there's definitely some unique re-inventions of the episodes there.

Thanks for letting me know!

It was a lot of fun to read for me. I'm used to this author's style, and I'm guessing they're putting emphasis on the differences in each time loop. The good thing about this is that you can read a little here and there without finishing a chapter if you only have a little time to spare. Which of course, suits you just fine.
