Short Fic

I have jotted out a short fic involving Baby Face and his gang. This one was not mentioned among my plunnie ideas and I'm a bit nervous about its acceptance in the The Monkees fandom at large, due more to the plot rather than the focus being on Baby Face. I think it came out really well, though. Now I'm just trying to figure out what to do with it and where to put it. I still don't know how to access my old Angelfire sites.

I have to admit, I had a bit of a struggle with what the ending lines should be, or rather, how they should be presented. I really felt that a very mild swear word would have more fully presented the despair and discouragement of the scene. But I long ago vowed never to have swear words in my stories. And I don't want to start, because then it could become easier to do it in future stories. As it stands now, Baby Face does swear, but you do not see what he said, which is usual when I'm writing for a character who either does swear or else probably would even if canonically it's never shown.

And I wish Antenna TV would add Circus Boy to their lineup. They should have access to it; it looks like Columbia/Screen Gems have the rights.

I know the feeling--several times I have characters using milder version of words they would likely use in that scenario--but because I have also vowed that I won't have swear words in my stories. XD;

LOL, irony--a friend of mine just posted a pic from Circus Boy--young Micky (I think...) giving a baby chimp a bottle of milk. XD It looks like a cute show. ^^

Yeah. Occasionally I do that too. But it would look really silly and ineffective in this scenario. So it's either show the swear word or show no word.

It is indeed young Micky. And I think I just saw that picture. So far, it's the easiest to tell it's him in that picture than in any of the others I've turned up. Although he really has the classic Micky smile here: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/153/352526953_d2b1e8b5c7_o.jpg

I wish I got Antenna TV - seems like it has some great shows on that channel.

It does! Maybe you could call and request it be added? That's what they say to do if you don't receive it.

I haven't used foul language either, nor do I intend to; there are indeed ways around it. Eventually the right sentence describing what blistered the ears will come up. Or, as you said, use no words.

Yeah, exactly. I'll probably leave it as it is right now, with the word not shown at all, unless I think of something better (which I probably won't).

Yeah, it kinda sucks when there's enough lack of fandom that you've got nowhere to post stuff. That tends to be a problem with old TV shows...

The swearing issue is frustrating T__T For me, it just sounds or looks wrong when I say or type them, even. The whole point of swear words is that they carry a lot of force behind them, though, so unfortunately they've become the go-to words for expressing things like anger, despair or "oh crap" moments.

Don't you hate it when companies have the rights to something and don't use them? T__T

The Monkees actually have a very large fanbase in general, and it looks like there's still people interested in fanfics. But stories involving characters who appeared in one episode ... that's a little sticky.

Yep. They're highly overused. One reason why I thought showing one in this fic would be helpful is because I never do show them, so showing one would hopefully emphasize the character's feelings. But I really don't want to.

Yessss. So very much.
