Pre-Nibelheim Fic Musings

Altered the title of the humor fic as per Aubrie's amusing suggestion. XD

Tossed some ideas at Stacey for the serious fic. We pondered over what type of injuries might result, judging by the placement of the scar, and what type of injuries I would be willing to do. Then I brought up my musings for the plot, which she liked. ^^ I decided that maybe Sephiroth and Zack were sent to investigate reports of an uprising (probably in a made-up area, unless anyone has a good idea for a canon area). They get there and are warmly welcomed, but things seem too perfect. Eventually they're held hostage by the place's leaders/secret army in order for the people to barter with Shinra for what they want. And that's as far as I've gotten. I'm getting rather excited about it now. Political intrigue, mixed with hopefully character studies of both Seph and Zack, and definitely some stuff about their friendship. I figure Seph gets wounded during a battle, but I haven't determined the details yet.

I haven't tried to write much yet about Sephiroth as he was before he flipped. Stacey and I have pondered over that too, and I'm anxious to get some of our ideas down on paper/word processor/whatever. I find it interesting that he reportedly had some problems with being prideful about his strength, mixed with an apparently kind and warm side. We mused over that he was probably also quite blunt, and that if other SOLDIERs came to talk to him about problems, he would probably tell it exactly as he saw it, as well as what could be done about it. In my own mind I picture him as someone who would always make time when he could to hear about other's problems, but would never talk about his own, except possibly now and then to Zack. But even then, I doubt he'd ever say much.

And he goes through a lot of different stages in T&D and S&M, as I fully realized when I wrote it out earlier as a personal study for me. X3 He and Cloud develop the most in the fics, though I'm also hoping to do something with Reno though what and how, I'm not sure.

For personal reference, here's what I wrote, though some things may alter or change as time goes on. The first two sections are what's known and/or assumed from canon, while the rest is me taking that information and experimenting with it:

Pre-Nibelheim: Not much is known. He was very powerful, strong, highly looked up to and admired. He was apparently close to Zack, and a warm, kind person. He also had some problems with being proud of his strength.

Nibelheim and Afterwards: When he flipped out, he became malicious, hateful, and determined to do anything to correct what he believed to be a grave injustice committed against his "mother", Jenova, and himself. He considered his defeats at Cloud's hands to be outrageous blows to his ego. Though Jenova influenced him and drove him mad, he eventually took control over her.

Beginning of Twilight and Dawn: Without his memories, his sanity is restored and he behaves similarly to the way he did before Nibelheim. He is a calculating and intelligent businessman, and a kind, warm person.

Continuing T&D: As he gets his memories back, he is stunned and horrified; he can't believe he did the horrible things he did when he was insane. At first he refuses to believe it, becoming either furious or frenzied when it's brought up. But eventually Zack convinces him of the truth of what he says, and of Seph's dreams. Then he hates himself, he hates Jenova, and his pride is shattered. Everything he thought he had, even his strength, is because of Jenova in some way. He wonders who he really is.

And on, to the end of T&D: He doesn't kick around in self-pity and guilt; he decides to do something, to try to make restitution as best as he can. He becomes cold, bitter. He hates himself still, and now he is dark and sobered, an anti-hero. He doesn't really have hope, and he doesn't expect to be forgiven for what he's done. He can never forgive himself.

S&M: He is still this way, and will remain so, but he's also getting back a little more of the other sides to his personality, too. Sometimes he comes off as arrogant, sometimes he's warm, sometimes he's sarcastic. . . . He's an enigma, who continues to bewilder Cloud, even as Cloud finally begins to get over his hatred of the other and as Sephiroth comes to almost mentor Cloud at times, in his own way.

I tried writing an argument between him and Cloud at the beginning of S&M, after he returns from parts unknown, but it came out wrong. XD Whoops. **will have to try again.**

The pre-Nibelheim fic? Sounds AWESOME. Might I suggest it take place in the Corel Prison? Pretty gritty place (stupid bandits kept running up and stealing my gil!), and I can definitely see some of the guards/higher ups plotting something like what you described.

Sounds good to me! XD Is the place literally a prison, like for convicts, or is that just what they named the town because of all the corel or something?
