Another Blurb

I'm going to start writing chapter 3 of Twilight and Dawn now. Meanwhile, here's a short blurb/exercise near the end of Twilight and Dawn. I'm trying to get to know the sane Sephiroth while Cloud is trying to piece together WTH is going on. XD This isn't the same as the epilogue scene I was talking with Lisa about, but it's the beginning of Cloud's musings that he will continue in said epilogue.

Cloud narrowed his eyes as Sephiroth brushed past, proceeding deeper into the bizarre, cavelike palace. It was strange. At that moment, a realization was starting to hit him with full force. This was not a man he knew.

He was not the Sephiroth whom Cloud had looked up to and idolized; he was not the Sephiroth who had been Zack's close friend, or the Sephiroth who had been a powerful, efficient, yet kind, person.

He was also not the Sephiroth who had gone mad, burning down Nibelheim and slaughtering the townspeople. He was not the Sephiroth who had fought his former comrades in the mako reactor room, and not the Sephiroth who had tormented Cloud by speaking to him in his mind, killing Aerith, and summoning Meteor.

He was a third Sephiroth, a cold, dark, sobered Sephiroth. He knew his terrible past, and the abominations he himself had committed after taking leave of his senses. But this Sephiroth was free of Jenova's influence and in control of his mind. The combined knowledge of everything that had been done to him and that he had done had not driven him insane. But what had it done to him?

Cloud still remembered how Sephiroth had behaved without any of his memories. Working with him at Jenova Corp, Cloud had found him to be calculating, intelligent, and admirable. He had been coolly polite around potential clients, and around Cloud he had come to lower his defenses. As a business tycoon, he had been an honorable person, as he had been while in SOLDIER. Cloud had looked up to him again. It had been painful, to get back his memories of his true past with that man.

He frowned. It must have been painful for Sephiroth, as well. How had he even kept from going mad this time? Now he just seemed bitter. At what, Cloud did not know. Himself, maybe, or Jenova. Probably Gast and Hojo as well. He knew the full truth about himself now---what they had done to him, and who his actual mother had been. Maybe he was bitter towards her, too.

It must have been horrible, to learn that not only had he been lied to while being in SOLDIER, but that everything he had believed afterwards was untrue also. He had gone insane over that pack of falsehoods, most of them cleverly crafted and suggested by Jenova herself. It would not have had to happen. He had been unprepared to deal with the possible truth about himself, and Jenova had preyed on that.

Sephiroth was right, that she was their true enemy this time. And apparently, even though he was not working with Cloud and the others, he was trying to stop her too. The blonde wondered, had Jenova always been the real nemesis behind everything? Would Sephiroth have never completely lost his mind if not for her? These were thoughts he had never fully considered. Strange, that it had been Aerith and Zack who had told him of these possibilities.

Cloud's frown deepened. Was Sephiroth honorable again now? During the fight that Cloud himself had instigated, Sephiroth had fought fairly and without underhanded tactics. When Cloud had tumbled over the side of the building and had been forced to grab the edge, Sephiroth had held the Masamune in front of his face, commenting on how easily he could kill his rival. But then he had sheathed the blade and had pulled Cloud back up. And when Cloud had then lost their battle, Sephiroth had not tried to finish him. He had not explained why, instead telling Cloud to figure it out.

But Cloud could not figure it out. He did not even know how to deal with a sane Sephiroth, especially such a vague and ambiguous one. He did not want to fight this Sephiroth again. Still, somehow he had the feeling that it would probably happen. After all, it seemed that they were fated to remain enemies, despite having a current common goal in defeating Jenova.

We got a bunch of snow yesterday. X3 In the morning it was all blizzardy, and you could hardly see beyond it. It was an attack of snow! XD It's lovely heavy wet snow, too. I wish I wasn't coughing and whatnot. I'd go out and try to make a snow sculpture with it.

Poor, confused Cloud. *pats him* He's so much fun to mess around with though, no? But I like that he's trying to work through what originally caused Sephiroth to go crazy. ^_^

Oh, and yay for snow! Ours is starting to melt, after a few days of it being so cold all the snow froze solid, lol. You could walk all over it and it wouldn't sink at all. Hope your cough gets better soon, btw! ^^
