Truly disgusting.
Nov. 3rd, 2009 09:23 pmWatching more YGO episodes, I think I've discovered the most abominable thing the dub did.
It's a shame that they removed amazing scenes of h/c and angst (like in the episode where Joey almost dies because of Yami Marik). It's annoying when they changed lines and made characters like Duke sound terrible. I hated when they took out Valon's flashback at the church. But this is downright disgusting.
I'd forgotten that in the dub, everyone was upset because "evil" people had been sacrificed to bring about the supposedly sacred Millennium Items. Completely aside from the fact that graverobbers are *not* the most evil kinds of people out there, no one seemed upset that a sacrifice was being offered in general! So apparently if the people had not been "evil", they would have thought it was just fine.
I wanted to hit Mahado when Thief King Bakura told about Kul Elna being destroyed and him there, watching in horror. Mahado said unfeelingly, "What Bakura failed to mention is that all of those people were evil."
So, seriously, the dub thought it was an improvement to let kids think that sacrificing people to make magical items is okay, just as long as the people are not "evil"?! In the original version and the manga, everyone was horrified because people were being sacrificed in general! The dub gravely insulted Mahado and Atem's father (not gonna try spelling his name) by changing what they were so upset about.
