**pokes fic.**
Jul. 12th, 2010 11:09 amI have a fic that's been kicking around that I never have posted. Part of it's because I keep having other updates I want to post more, LOL. Part of it's because I'm unsettled about how it will be received. And apparently it was still unfinished; I added some more to it this morning. LOL.
It's the one that deals with the events of my Phantom Hitchhiker trilogy; specifically, how the minor students are handling the death from those stories. But it's really something that can be read alone; I tried to make sure of that in the structure of the writing. I wanted an exploration of what the various students' feelings and reactions might be, and that's how the plunnie was born. I'm not worried because the cast for two-thirds of it is the more minor students (and Pike and Lilie); I'm just wondering how the fandom at large will accept the subject matter of the aftermath of a death. The last third of the fic, which gave me the most trouble, deals with the funeral and interment. I *think* I've only written an actual funeral scene once, in Lead Me Through the Fire (well, actually there were two, but only one for someone who really died). Of course, there was the In Memory fic too, but I don't count that as exactly the same.
I'm sure I will post it, once I'm assured it's actually done, and once I have a good opening to post it, but I'll probably steel myself for flying tomatoes anyway.
Overall, though, I'm actually really proud of the fic. I think it's very poignant, and I love the scenes with the minor characters. I think my favorite is the middle section with Freya talking to some mean girls in the library who are putting down the deceased. Malen is listening to the whole thing and wonders if she should have spoke up as well.
