The Night of the Man-Eating House!
Aug. 28th, 2011 01:29 amI watched The Night of the Man-Eating House again, so far one of my favorite episodes of The Wild Wild West. And I noticed the odd look Mr. Day, the prisoner, gave Artie when he asked Jim if he believed in ghosts. It wasn't a "You're nuts!" look; it seemed to be more of a shocked "You remember?!" or "I'm caught!" look. And that made me think that maybe Artie's dream really wasn't a dream, maybe not even a warning. Now I'm wondering if Caroline Day was trying to make everyone go mad by manipulating their dreams. And perhaps Artie was the only one who remembered any of it upon awakening, save for the prisoner, who knew his dead mother would have some scheme in mind since they were right near the family home.
I'd still like to write a fic that would be a continuation of the episode. It needs a continuation, since they were discovering the house in real-life when it ended---and they were going inside! Maybe Artie will recall more and more of the contents of his dream and realize that they need to get out before everything in the dream becomes real. And of course, he will see to it that the sheriff gets out with them instead of ending up dead and drained of blood, poor man.
I'm thinking maybe I'd put in a scene of two of all of them talking tensely in the living room, trying to get their minds on something, anything else besides the living house and their inability to get out. It would be a good opportunity to flesh out the sheriff's character a bit more. And of course, I'd need to make the whole thing sufficiently different from Artie's dream while still keeping the basic outline, such as the bit in the laboratory with the diseased rats about to be set loose. And Jim will be bewildered as to how Artie knew about all these things happening before they happened.
