I suddenly realized that
31_days's themes this month are perfect for a project I've been contemplating for a while: Missing Scenes from The Case of the Broken Ties. And so I immediately commenced writing the scenes. Some are short, some are long, some I like better than others, and people will probably like the ones best that I like least. That always seems to be the way.
One thing most of the themes have in common is that gah, they're slaying me. Vivalene's cruel plot heavily included revenge against Hamilton and giving everyone false memories of him to make them think he's horrible. And he thinks Paul, the only one with him who remembers the truth, hated him anyway. There's lots of conflicts, lots of heartache ... man. And Vivalene's even darker, too. I'm not sure whether I'm overdoing everything, but it's possible that in the original story I underdid it. A lot of what's happening in these scenes probably could have happened in the gaps in the main fic. I just hope I won't forget to include the scenes that originally made me want to do this series.
... I hope I haven't forgotten what they are.
I also have a scene with Hamilton and Leon to try to help explain the mess I made with Leon that had started to drive me nuts. It's for the 12th, and it's one of my favorites so far. But it also includes one of the bits that hurts the most.
Hamilton stared at Leon in amazement. Was this . . . could this be true? Leon did not detest him, as everyone else who remembered him in any way seemed to? Only Della and Andy, devoid of all memories, had been kind to him. Even the neighbors, whom he did not know well, had been cruel. Why would Vivalene make such an oversight with his confidential secretary, someone he saw and worked with closely every day? Could this be a trap, a trick?
He hated going on guard, not knowing what to believe. He longed to simply accept Leon’s words as the honest truth. But he had been kicked far too many times during this disaster. He did not know what to think or do.
Poor Hamilton. I think that bit, almost more than anything else, displays how Vivalene's been breaking him down.
There's going to be some squee scenes too: a couple with Perry and Della, a couple with Della teaching school, and some towards the end of the fic as everyone is trying to get their right lives back together and make amends for all the hurt. I haven't got to any of those yet, though, aside from one school ficlet with Della. I want something with Andy as the principal, too. And I have a ficlet towards the end of the story as Paul is having a nightmare and wakes up deciding he has to stop avoiding Hamilton and go talk with him about everything they've been through and Paul's realization that they always have been friends.
