... Interesting revelation there.
Sep. 15th, 2013 04:04 amSo I was fiddling around with Garrison's Gorillas episodes again and I had the urge to watch at least some of an episode I'd avoided. I had avoided it because I had the feeling that several of the characters had to cross-dress in it and I felt that those particular characters doing it would break my brain instead of make me laugh.
Well, I was right about the cross-dressing, and about my brain breaking, so I quickly shuttled past that part.
And it got me thinking. Sometimes I like cross-dressing as a gag and find it hilarious. Of course, Corporal Klinger is the master of the art and he always gets a big laugh from me.
Characters like Artemus Gordon doing it makes me laugh and simultaneously weirds me out, especially how goofy and shameless he is about it. LOL. Arte can be such an oddball sometimes. (And yes, I'm talking about the TV series, not the movie. Honestly, him dressing up like a woman is one of the few things really existing in the series that they brought over to the movie. Thankfully, he didn't do it much.)
But trying to imagine people like my Lovelies cross-dressing ... no. It just doesn't compute. Richard or H.M. or Chris or (heaven forbid) Simon in a dress and makeup ... no. Just no. I don't find that funny and it disturbs me more than anything else.
And speaking of Arte, I've been watching a lot of the season 4 episodes without him lately. There were ten of those, when Ross Martin was recovering from a heart attack. Actually, a lot of them are excellent episodes even with Jim working with other agents instead of with Arte, and several of them are among my top favorites of the whole season. Of course, Jim is my favorite character, so I never have to be deprived of my favorite. He's in every episode.
I love how his character grows. In season 1, I'll admit, sometimes he can be terrible. And if he had stayed that way, I probably wouldn't like him so much. But he really matures a lot. By season 4, he isn't nearly so trusting of all the females, nor are there as many incidents of him romancing them.
I think I've finally figured out the difference between Arte and Jeremy, too. I'll have to re-watch Jeremy's other two episodes before I'm completely sure, but as it stands, I see it thusly:
Arte can be very overdramatic and showy. He can be serious, and that's when I like him best, but he's a thespian and often leans towards eccentric, bold behaviors and gestures when he's happy or enthused.
Jeremy is more quiet and down-to-earth. Even when he goes into disguise mode, he doesn't seem to overplay it the way Arte usually does. He just gets the job done.
I'm really happy that I think I've figured it out. This means I can finally write for Jeremy, when I find a place for him in a fic. One of my main holdups has been not knowing how to write him sufficiently different from Arte.
