So I went wandering in Wal-Mart last night and discovered a lot of fun things, as usual. Oh, what I would buy if I had the money for a shopping spree.

But what geekily excited me the most was discovering a new release of the first 24 Yu-Gi-Oh! episodes, marked Season 1 Volume 1! Squeeee. I have all the episodes recorded on tape, but it's awkward to get to watch them much since I don't want to move the VCR to my room from the living room after that spell it had where it wouldn't record things properly. Plus, I've heard that the dub episodes, which were already edited, got edited even more on the TV (and not just the two-parters that they spliced into one-parters). That would make DVD copies worth getting, to see a bit of extra stuff.

The set is $12.95. I remember when you could only get one disc with three or four episodes for that price, or even more. Since I have always loved the English dub, in spite of the edits, and since DVDs are so much nicer than tapes, I really really want this new set. I'm debating asking for it for my birthday.

It was such a blast from the past and welcome burst of nostalgia to see it among the new releases. It reminded me of happy times when I was a wide-eyed teenager, just discovering the amazing first season episodes. And it had a sticker on it that was marked something like "The first 24 episodes of the classic series."

Yesss, the first YGO is truly a classic. I honestly don't care at all about the spin-offs; to me they have premises far harder to grasp and more preposterous than the original series and they likely only exist to make money, with the company just capitalizing on the popularity of the YGO name. But the first YGO, to me that was quality stuff. Well-rounded characters, intense plots, and probably the single most influential fandom I've ever been in. My writing developed so much and I met so many of my friends because of that show.
