So I'm close to having seen around half of the most hated season of U.N.C.L.E., 3. And ... honestly, I find that as usual, I fell in with common opinion prematurely. If I had continued to ignore this season, figuring it was as terrible as most people say, I would be missing out on a lot of gems.

There's a lot more friendship squee in season 3. And a lot more hurt/comfort, too. I just adore it, for the most part! There's even a hilarious episode where Napoleon and Illya go undercover buying a house and have to deal with all kinds of bizarre domestic problems (which often end up rather dangerous). It's priceless.

I've only seen three U.N.C.L.E. episodes that I imagine seriously contribute to why people hate season 3, and one of them is in season 1! I was very disappointed in The Gazebo in the Maze Affair, or whatever it's called. Absolutely off-the-wall. And season 3's The Super-Colossal Affair is cut from the same cloth.

The third episode, however, I really get a kick out of in spite of its added goofiness. It's the Come With Me to the Casbah Affair, and it features a goofy THRUSH agent played by the guy who played Boris on The Monkees. Gotta love that.

Anyway, by and large, the season 3 episodes I've seen are not the utterly campy, outrageous ventures I've heard that they are. Most of the ones I saw were every bit as sensible as the episodes I love from other seasons, with just a bit more humor but not enough to send things spiraling into the ridiculous (like the Super-Colossal Affair does).

Actually, the season I haven't cared for too much is 2. There's some good episodes there, too, of course, but overall it just can't seem to figure out where it's going and there's quite a few assorted tone changes in the episodes as they try to find their footing.
