You know, one of the odd and ironic things about My Little Pony and the varying quality of the seasons is that Rainbow Dash, my least favorite, starts out acting really mean sometimes in season 1. And she really grows positively through the seasons. She can still be obnoxious sometimes, but wow, there's really no comparison. She's gotten really comfortable with showing that she's actually a nice Pony, instead of being such a jerk and show-off so much of the time. I had actually forgotten how mean she could be in the early episodes (although I certainly remembered her worst moments from season 2). Realizing this, it may make me more receptive to buying the Build-a-Bear plush of her, which is good because she's probably the one they'll retire first.

But on the other hand ... many of the other characters, including some of my favorites, were usually at their best in season 1 and regressed negatively in the succeeding seasons. **headdesk.** Pinkie, for instance, started out as a deep and empathetic character. She lost most of that empathy by season 2. I've only really seen it return once, in a season 3 episode.

(I really wish we could explore more of her as her original self, the straight-haired, serious, insecure, and kind of disturbingly unbalanced Pony. I'm rather fascinated by that side of her.)

Fluttershy would always flip out if her friends were being hurt. Now, she puts fireflies ahead of her friends.

Rarity used to care more about her friends than fashion, even though she always loved both. But in later seasons, it just really seems like she's always thinking more about fashion or doing oddball things like having Sweetie Belle pull her in her carriage. Maybe Sweetie asked to do that, but we don't know, so it comes off looking really odd and lazy and superficial and cliche and not so good for Rarity. (I'm hoping she'll be her old self in this week's episode, but I'm not sure I should hope too hard.)

Twilight is usually the same wonderful Pony I immediately loved from the start, but they've occasionally made her behave in odd, OOC ways lately, too.

Applejack is pretty much the same. Interesting thing, I looked back in some older entries and saw that I'd been tagged as Applejack in a quiz. I decided then that maybe I was a mix of Twilight and Applejack. I do love Apple's devotion to family (and by extension, friends). And I do believe in hard work and in taking responsibility for your actions, as Applejack does when she's being written right. (There was a rather awful season 1 episode with her that I ranted about last year.) I think I've come to appreciate and love Applejack more than before. Right now, she's higher on my favorites list than Pinkie. It used to be the other way around. And realizing how much Rainbow has really grown since season 1 almost tempts me to put Rainbow higher on my list, too.

I didn't like season 3 much and I've been very underwhelmed by season 4 so far. Funny thing is, what I worried about most, Twilight being an alicorn, has ended up not bothering me much. The only episodes I really liked have been the opening two-parter and the next one after that.

Also, while I still say it was ridiculous to cram everything that happened in the season 3 finale into one episode instead of a two-parter, there's no doubt that Magical Mystery Cure has some of the best music of the whole series. I absolutely adore the True, True Friend song!
