Reunion Movies
Feb. 4th, 2014 10:49 pmSo MeTV will be showing The Return of the Man from U.N.C.L.E. on Friday evening. I haven't yet decided whether I'm going to try to see it.
I really don't like reunion movies. I feel like it's wrong and awful of me to feel that way and that instead I should just appreciate the cast coming together again. Well, I certainly do like that aspect of it. But for me, that rarely outweighs what I don't like.
The fact is, most reunion movies will not reunite everyone. Some people will be dead. (And sometimes they don't appear for other reasons.) And usually the living characters have all gone their separate ways and are just coming together for the duration of the movie. Generally they separate again by the end. Depressing.
I often don't care for what's become of the characters in the interim between the series and the film. And I often don't like what happens to the characters during the course of the film.
I don't consider reunion movies absolute canon, but only one possibility of how things could be in the future. Sometimes I can enjoy them on their own merits. Sometimes I just can't. Even when I enjoy a reunion movie while I'm watching it, like The Mod Squad one, I usually will end up not being happy about it after it's over. In that one, for instance, I didn't like what had happened to Pete. It was sad that his life had gone sour. And I didn't like that they all lived far away from each other.
I use television shows to escape from reality. I guess the bottom line is, I don't like reunion movies because they're too full of reality.
MeTV showed Return to Mayberry a few weeks ago. I had intended to catch it, but then wasn't available, and I have no regrets. I know in detail about the movie and while it has some nice parts, I don't think it would be a favorite thing to watch any more than any other reunion movie.
Mom will probably want to see the U.N.C.L.E. reunion movie, if she remembers about it and is available to see it. And of course, if she watches it, I will. Otherwise, though, I really don't know that I care to.
