You know, even though I know now that The Fifty-Millionth Frenchman Affair is a good story, part of me still isn’t satisfied. Part of me still wants to also tell the story more fully that’s going on in flashback snippets, where Illya is being visited by the wandering spirit of Mr. Ecks during the time Ecks is teetering very badly between life and death. I wrote a oneshot story some time back showing the first such visit and it was actually pretty well-received. Maybe that was only a one-time thing and furthering the idea would be mostly ignored, especially since the Frenchman Affair has been largely ignored, but on the other hand, maybe expanding on the very short flashback snippets in their own story would be liked. My plan was that Illya and Ecks would share a lot of the deep conversations that were part of what made the original oneshot story well-liked.
In any case, I think that since that’s something I’ve wanted very badly to do, I should give it a whirl and just see what would happen. Character studies are generally my most favorite type of thing to write, rather than action and adventure. And I have to admit, those mini-flashbacks are probably my favorite parts of the Frenchman chapters. Popping them in their own story, as I wanted from the beginning, and expanding on them would likely be delightful to me.
