Crystal compiled a list of intriguing, fandom-related questions from a comm. I started thinking about one and decided to answer it. If anyone else wants to do it, knock yourselves out.
What are your five favorite cases of amnesia in fandom?
5. Peter from The Monkees. A mad scientist gave him amnesia in episode #17, The Case of the Missing Monkee. And the scene where he loses his memories is surprisingly serious and dark for such a silly show. He hears the other Monkees calling to him and sees scenes of them going along doing silly things and then riding away, as if they're riding out of his memories. Then he doesn't remember. ;__; (Of course, then the part where he gets his memories back is kind of a cop-out, but I still love the episode. X3)
4. Scrooge McDuck from DuckTales. One of the later episodes, I think #91, features Scrooge getting amnesia and then realizing how horrible he's been treating his employees, as he ends up working at one of his own plants. It was pretty dark in some ways too, and thankfully, it didn't lay the moral on really heavy. It was quite a poignant episode. o.o And I've remembered the scene where Fenton impersonates him ever since I first saw it when I was four or five, though for years I thought he did it to help Scrooge remember. I think when I saw it recently, the truth was he had to impersonate Scrooge during some inspection and ran into the real Scrooge by accident?
3. Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII. Of course, Cloud must be included! His journey through the original game to find out his true identity is so heart-wrenching, with twists at every turn. The point where he thinks he was just an experiment and never really had a life ... oh man. ;___; And the part where Tifa helps him to remember (and also remembers things she had blocked out) ... so powerful! And remembering who Zack is.... Poor Cloud! It must be so horrible for him, to realize that he had blocked out all memories of his best friend!
2. Shadow the Hedgehog from the Sonic the Hedgehog games/Sonic X. Shadow is one of my favorite characters because of his complexity, and I remember thinking (along with the rest of the fanbase) that he died at the end of Sonic Adventure 2 when he remembered Maria's true wish and helped Sonic save Earth. At the time, I kind of thought it was better that way, like some fans did, and that him coming back would lessen the sacrifice. But after I really became a fan, I couldn't bear to think he was gone. XD; I was upset when it looked like there were only clones of him in Sonic Heroes, but thrilled when the real one returned later. He regains his memories in the games, but he didn't in Sonic X. I always thought it was really sad that when he came back in season 3, he didn't remember Chris. ;___; I wanted him to remember so bad! I really hope we get a fourth season, as I've heard rumors about.
1. Baloo from TaleSpin. The Old Man and the Sea Duck is one of the most powerful episodes I've ever seen of any show. I saw it when I was five or six, and way back then, I was shocked (in a good way) by the deep, poignant episode, and how that old pilot helps Baloo remember how to fly again. The final twist, where it's revealed the pilot died years earlier, totally makes the episode. o.o Absolutely beautiful, magnificent story-telling!
Honorable Mentions:
Logan/Wolverine from X-Men: Evolution. I remember always really enjoying the few episodes they did about his past and wishing they'd show more/have him remember.And I haven't seen X-Men Origins yet, but I know about it. X3
Monica from Touched by an Angel. Of course, I don't believe angels can get amnesia. The very idea is preposterous. But the episode was very intense!
... And I just remembered one even moreso, involving a character called Claire, also an angel. If I recall correctly, she saw some horrible tragedies and it made her forget she was an angel, and she stayed on Earth with some children she was looking after? ;___; **would like to see this one again.**
Also, a week ago I saw some of Sonic Underground. I've always been mad at them for taking Tails away (sacrilege!), but the fact that Knuckles is in four episodes has always been enough to entice me to try those episodes. Honestly, Knuckles is about the only thing that could have gotten me to watch that version. LOL. I found a DVD at Toys R Us with those four episodes, so I bought it.
It's actually not a bad show; I *love* the poignant theme song and was amazed by it. But I don't think I'd be interested in watching it without Knuckles. XD; Especially since it ended without resolving the main storyline.
Sonia's voice is *awful*, but of course, that's because she's played by a guy. LOL. Jaleel White plays Sonic and both of his siblings. **snarks.** Sonia, in personality, reminds me of Amy Rose somewhat. But thankfully, she doesn't hit people with a hammer. And as for the brother, I like his personality ... but Manic?! What kind of a name is that?!
Sleet and Dingo are strange. I love Sleet's voice, though---a clear tribute to Peter Lorre. Dingo has a typical Aussie accent, like I picture Fang having in my Sonic X fic. But ... Sleet can turn Dingo into anything he wants---from a motorcycle to a boat to a safe?! WTH!? That is just BIZARRE. DO NOT WANT.
Knuckles is ... very interesting. After he determines Sonic and the other Hedgehogs are friendly, he makes friends. There seems to be no rivalry with Sonic. Also, his voice establishes him as one of Sonic's contemporaries, instead of making him sound years older. And as much as I love Dan Green playing him in Sonic X, that's exactly what he does. XD;
This Knuckles also has a pet dinosaur (?!). And in some ways, he actually seems more sadistic than any other Knuckles incarnation. I mean, he was pretty much roasting Sleet and Dingo and going to feed them to the dinosaur. .____. Um, no. Just no.
I didn't much like that first episode with Knuckles, but it does get better. The other three episodes are connected, and they involve him and the Hedgehogs trying to save Mobius after a Chaos Emerald shatters and starts bringing chaos upon the whole planet. o.o At one point, he feels forced to make a deal with Robotnik to save Mobius, by turning over the Hedgehogs in exchange for help in finding the Emerald. And it's treated in an extremely powerful and poignant way, with Knuckles not wanting to betray his friends, yet feeling trapped because of the greater good. As soon as he realizes Robotnik's tricked him, however, he saves the Hedgehogs. They forgive him and they set about trying to save Mobius together. X3
And LOL-worthy dialogue: Sleet and Dingo discuss the warning "Beware the Echidna." Dingo actually asks "... What's an echidna?" **snerk.** Just the way he said it was so amusing! And if Dingo is a dingo, it gets more amusing, since dingoes and echidnas are both native to Australia.
