So I was reading about Disney's Lone Ranger movie the other day. It sounds basically quite interesting and good, but ... why, why, why do they have to have the villain be so repulsive and horrifying that he murders the Lone Ranger's brother and freakin' eats his heart?!

Why does Disney seem to have an obsession with heart-related stuff in their PG-13 movies? There's all that junk with the removal of hearts in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, too. And let's not forget the heavy emphasis on heart removal on Once Upon a Time, which airs on a station owned by Disney.

Yes, yes, I know heart removal is a popular device in fantasy. Yes, yes, there's stuff like Kingdom Hearts and Princess Tutu that have elements of that sort of thing as well.

At least, though, in those things, the objects ... well, don't look like hearts.

Not that that's the sole reason for my repelled feelings, of course, but it's harder to take it seriously when, say, the supposed pieces of heart are jewels and seem to only represent feelings.

The objects look very much like hearts on Once Upon a Time and in Pirates of the Caribbean. I still wish I'd really researched the second Pirates movie before I got excited about it and wanted to buy it. If I had known about all that junk with the hearts, I wouldn't have wanted it. I still haven't brought myself to see the third film; I think the scene where they actually cut out Will's heart would really disturb me. Plus, I don't like that whole aspect of the film anyway. It's too depressing for him to have to captain the Flying Dutchman or whatever it is and be separated from his wife, even if it's just for ten years while she waits.

And as much as I enjoy watching Once because I love the characters, I don't think I'll ever want the DVDs. Among other things, I'm sick of how heart removal is such a huge part of the villains' plots. They really went overboard in season 2, with that seeming to be the main horror of choice. It really grosses me out. Aside from that awful thing that happened to the Mad Hatter, which is in a whole other category of sickening horror, I think the heart removal upsets me the most on the series. I didn't even know if I wanted to watch it after the second episode, but the characters themselves kept me anchored then and brought me back every time I felt like giving it up.

Anyway, it seems to me that Disney really wants gratuitous violence in their PG-13 films. It's like they're trying to get as far removed from a kiddie label with those movies as they can, even if they're still being somewhat marketed at kids. I'm growing very sick of everything that has to do with heart removal. And it makes me very leery wondering what they're going to do with Star Wars.

It's funny; originally I worried that Disney owning the rights would make Star Wars too kiddie. Now I'm worried it will simply be too violent and gross.
