Gotham returns.

So Gotham returned on Monday. I had to wait until Tuesday to see it; Monday was hectic.
Thoughts:
The best thing ever was seeing how Jim's had a positive influence on Harvey Bullock. The way Bullock comes in and treats Dr. Lang was a thing of beauty. And his happy greeting to Jim was adorable! Bullock used to be like Jim, very determined to do the right thing. Some of that side of him is coming back. If that continues, I could honestly come to really like this version of the character.
Unfortunately, I can't say the same for Barbara Keane or Renee Montoya. They are still insufferable. At least Montoya realized they should break it off, but there wasn't one word of realizing how their actions would be hurting Jim. And she's supposed to know now that Jim is a good person. She's supposed to even be working with him to stamp out corruption. All Montoya seemed to care about was that Barbara is apparently a bad influence on her. Of course, that's something to worry about, but she should have also thought about Jim's feelings.
I try really hard to think about how distraught and upset Barbara is after what she went through being kidnapped, but I just have no respect for her. It ticked me off how she was all, "I'm all over Jim" after being back with Montoya for a month. (And she hadn't even wanted anything to do with Montoya before! In past episodes, she was the one citing how bad their past relationship was.) She and Jim haven't broken off their engagement, to my remembrance. And she walked out on him, not the other way around. And maybe he could have been a little nicer when she kept calling and being needy, true, but he was so stressed because he was in the middle of a big case. And she realized that. She said that she was going off to better herself and indicated she would be back.
And seriously? Okay, Ivy was being a **bleep** when Barbara called the apartment and Ivy answered, but she's a ten-year-old kid. Or thirteen, maybe, somewhere in there. Surely Barbara has enough intelligence to know that was a kid's voice on the phone, not some adult vamp! And she tells Ivy "Go to Hell" and hangs up. Telling a kid to go to Hell, wow. I like Barbara less and less with every episode. Note that I do not like Ivy either, but that was just awful.
(Also, Barbara says "I'm over Jim" and yet she wants to go crawling back to him the moment Montoya breaks it off with her? UGGGGGGH! Please, Jim, marry Leslie Thompkins. Barbara is not worth your time. At all.)
I think the best female character on this show is Selina Kyle. Sometimes she's smarmy and annoying, being a thief and all, but she still cares about people and isn't going to leave someone sick and wet out in the elements, even if it's someone she doesn't personally like very much (Ivy). Among the other main females on this show, we've got weak and aggravating Barbara Keane, back-stabbing and selfish Renee Montoya, nasty-as-heck and hateful Fish Mooney, and a police captain who is basically a nice person but is also weak in how she cowtows to the bad guys running the city (and presumably thinks that killing a crook like Oswald Cobblepot in cold blood is okay). Although if Leslie Thompkins is going to be a regular character now, she is finally another female character who seems pretty decent. And I wonder what happened to Fish's spy who seemed to have a conscience. I think she's still watching Falcone, but is supposed to report to Oswald.
The actual case in the episode was very intense and creepy. And it will continue into the next episode.
A subplot involved two friends who are members of the rival criminal organizations. One was supposed to convince the other to change his mind about wanting to take over the business instead of Fish. I hoped it might end with that one deciding to go over to his friend's side, as his friend wanted him to do. But I was afraid one of them would die instead, and that was what happened, with the one who had been trying to convince the other to change (and failing) shooting his former friend without warning. The worst part was that his friend still trusted him. He had no idea that he was going to be shot and then BANG! he was dead. It wouldn't have been such a bummer if he had realized. Ugh, that was the last scene of the episode and it really brought me down. I hate seeing friendships fall apart so horrendously.
I definitely noticed that Edward wasn't present; I wait anxiously for his screentime each episode. But err, it was only after the episode was over that I paused and thought "... Wait a minute, Bruce and Alfred weren't in this one." I think that's the first time they've been absent.
At least I saw Edward in the promo for the next episode. That kind of soothed both my disappointment at his absence in this one and my discouragement over how awful the episode ended.
Also, one last thought. The next episode is in two weeks?! WTH?! They come off of hiatus and then immediately have another break? That is LAME.
But OHMYGOSHSQUEE we have a THIS TV affiliate again! We had to lose our local weather channel to get it, and I'll miss the fun jazz music they played, but oh yes, we can finally watch Highway Patrol and Sea Hunt on TV again! The channel showed up on New Year's Day and I was absolutely thrilled. I've been trying to catch the shows each chance I get. It feels so good to see them again!
I just hope it will last. I'm a little surprised that this particular network picked it up after the last THIS TV affiliate died because of My Network TV (boo!). The new network is one of the more conservative networks in the area, and THIS TV's lineup of movies is often ... not that great. The best programming they have are the old TV shows I'm so stoked to have back. I wish they'd bring back some of the other oldies shows they used to have, like Bat Masterson. And they used to show more old movies than they do now; it seems like their selection is getting more recent all the time.
And honestly? Next week THIS TV is going to air The Hunting Party. The movie sounds absolutely awful (wife has an abusive, mean husband, she gets kidnapped by illiterate crooks and raped, yet she ends up deciding the main crook and rapist is a much nicer man than her husband. Honestly? Both men sound absolutely as lame as you can get). But ... I've always wanted to see just the scenes with Simon Oakland. From what I've read, he's pretty much the only decent character in the whole film. If I record the film, I could easily fast-forward and only stop at Simon's scenes. I could even erase the abominable film after I watch those. (Unless I can't bear to do that because of Simon being awesome.)
I really have no other immediate access to this movie unless I buy it (and I don't know that I want to spend money on it) or get it off Netflix, which I do not want to do because there would be uncomfortable questions. But recording it could cause that as well, as it airs during the time when news is on and if I have to ask Dad to watch the other TV for news, both he and Mom will wonder what I'm doing. (And Mom might hope I'm getting CHiPs and I'd hate to disappoint her. I'd probably also feel guilty that I wouldn't be using the time to get CHiPs.)
THIS TV often airs things repeatedly. I'm hoping to check the schedule and see if any other airings are coming up at better times. But if not, I'm left with the dilemma of should I pick it up or shouldn't I. And how would I explain doing so if I do.
