Heh, well, this figures: I hit another snag in Prisms, so while I was trying to sort that out I ended up typing out all the rest of the Beta Theme Set. XD Now I have even more plot bunnies. I must do fics based on #9 and #12, and the little saga depicted in #14, #19, #30, #32, #49, and #50.

#1: Walking. He was walking briskly, anger and annoyance in his eyes, and she struggled to keep up with him, afraid of what he might do when they reached their location; if she possibly could, she knew that she had to get him calmed down or else he was very likely to go completely out of control---and that was never something that she enjoyed watching.

#2: Waltz. She watched the other couples out on the dance floor, wrapped up for the moment in their elegant waltzes; Baby Face, of course, was not a romantic person by nature and he did not even know how to dance, she supposed; actually, when she thought of it, she had never asked, because she believed that the answer was obvious.

#3: Wishes. She could not deny that her life had not ended up the way she had planned, and that she did have wishes for something different; of course, she wanted Baby Face with her, but it would be so wonderful if he was not a vicious criminal; she longed for them to fade into obscurity, away from the mobs and the police, and live honest lives somewhere far away.

#4: Wonder. It seemed a wonder sometimes, that he still let Ruby be around with him; but on the other hand, it was so nice to have someone there who loved him unconditionally, and who treated him in a kind, gentle way; he could not understand why she felt that way about him, but he did not want to question it too much, as he felt that if he tried too hard to study it, she might change, just as a way of showing the ironies of life.

#5: Worry. Ruby worried over him every day, especially when she could see how angry and vengeful he often felt; she knew that it was not good or healthy for him to be filled with such emotions, and even though she was sometimes able to help him keep his temper under control, she could always sense that it was there in his heart, ready to boil out of control.

#6: Whimsy. Baby Face was usually such a rational, practical person who would think things out before going through with them, but when he was furious his personality took on an unpredictable whimsy and there was not any telling what he would do; Ruby was never afraid of him during such times, but she always was afraid for him.

#7: Wasteland. It seemed forever that he had been wandering through the wasteland, all alone, with no clear idea of where he was; perhaps he was even unconscious and this was a world created by his mind; he had no way of knowing, and yet it seemed to him that sometimes he could hear Ruby calling to him, her voice desperate, but when he would call back, she could never seem to hear him.

#8: Whiskey and Rum. Ruby sighed, shaking her head as she watched Baby Face pouring another shot of whiskey; empty bottles of both whiskey and rum were laying around on the floor, shoved out of the cupboard by Baby Face upon discovering that they did not have anything left within them, and he had felt triumphant upon finding one last, unopened bottle; Ruby wished that he would not drink so much.

#9: War. Ruby came into the room quietly and found Baby Face still sitting there, his eyes narrowed in contemplation as he continued his vigil over Tony; his associate had not regained consciousness since having been gunned down during a gang war with the Syndicate the previous day, and none of them were certain if he would survive; Ruby was not certain how Baby Face felt about the possibility of his death, as he had not said; actually, when she thought of it, he had barely said anything at all since the shooting.

#10: Weddings. Both Ruby's sister Jade and her old friend Jan were married now; Jade seemed to have picked a nice, quiet man, but Jan's weakness had always been bad boys and she had ended up with the leader of a motorcycle gang in Detroit; Ruby remembered being a bridesmaid at both of their weddings, and she idly wondered if she would ever be the bride.

#11: Birthday. It was on Ruby's birthday that she started to seriously wonder when Baby Face's was; she had the feeling that he probably did not know or care, as that was the way he felt about his real name; he had been known as "Baby Face" for so long that he did not ever seen to thnk of himself as anything else.

#12: Blessing. Ruby knew that she would never have her parents' blessing for her relationship with Baby Face; they were both dead now, but she could imagine them watching her from their afterlife and being appalled and alarmed at her association with gangsters; she still remembered what a nightmare it had been when Baby Face had gone with her to her father's funeral, and how everything had very nearly ended up revealed.

#13: Bias. Most anyone who realized that Ruby's beau was Baby Face Morales was quite biased against him; she had come to expect that, since he was one of the most vicious mobsters in the Western United States, but she wished that someone else could see in him what she saw; she felt that he was a good person, deep down, but that most of his goodness was buried under years of mistreatment and hatred.

#14: Burning. She could see in his eyes that the hatred was burning firmly and deeply; he wanted with all of his heart and soul to kill the man who had just been hurting her, and she struggled to get up and go to him before he completely lost his mind, telling him that she was alright and just to leave the man alone; but when her captor made a move to strike her down again, Baby Face lunged.

#15: Breathing. She sat on the floor by the couch, still holding his hand as she listened to his soft breathing; it comforted her, to know that he was alive and well, especially after the disaster from earlier that day.

#16: Breaking. Ruby always felt like her heart was breaking on the occasions when she did learn something of Baby Face's past, as it was never happy, and she was not surprised that he had turned out the way he had; one of the only peaceful times he had ever spoken of was when he had met the mysterious academy student who had seemed to understand him, and both he and Ruby wondered what had become of him.

#17: Belief. Ruby knew that Baby Face held the belief that no one was guiltless, and she supposed that to a certain extent she agreed, but he was always so negative---not that she blamed him, of course; still, she wished that he could see that humanity was not entirely the way he believed them to be and that there was more good in people than he seemed to think.

#18: Balloon. Ruby remembered turning balloons loose at her mother's funeral years before; she wondered what had happened to them and how far they had floated; Baby Face believed the tradition to be ridiculous and he had refused to participate in it when he had gone with her to her father's funeral.

#19: Balcony. Ruby screamed when she saw him fall over the balcony, dragging the other man with him; she could not bear to watch him hit the ground, so instead she simply ran as fast as she could to the bottom floor and outside; her captor had landed on the asphalt and was obviously dead from a broken neck---Baby Face was sprawled on the grass and his fate was unknown, and as Ruby collapsed beside him, her shoulders shaking as she sobbed, she could not help but think that this was her fault.

#20: Bane. Jade had once told Ruby that Baby Face would be the bane of her existence; Ruby found it strange that Jade had changed her mind later, saying that it seemed as if Baby Face had actually brought out a lot of Ruby's best qualities; Jade had even said that perhaps Ruby would be able to do the same for him.

#21: Quiet. He was quiet, gazing off into the distance, and Ruby wondered what he was thinking about; sometimes he would seem to completely go off into his own world and forget about whoever else was there, no matter how often he was called or spoken to; gently Ruby touched his arm, and when he did not answer, she sighed softly and put her arms around him as she laid her head on his shoulder.

#22: Quirks. She watched him absently toying with the ruby ring on his finger; it was one of the quirks he had possessed ever since they had first met, and she found it quite endearing.

#23: Question. He could see the unspoken question in her eyes as she silently asked if he loved her; part of him wanted to be able to respond, but he did not know how to, or if he even could possibly recognize any love that he felt for her; he might say that he did not love her and it would not be true, or vice versa---all he knew was that he did feel something for her.

#24: Quarrel. It was not often that they quarreled, but every so often they did, much to Baby Face's anger and annoyance and Ruby's sorrow; this time it was because of Ruby's concern over his drinking, and he had screamed and yelled that he did not drink too much and that it was all in Ruby's mind before throwing an empty bottle at the wall and watching it shatter; when a part of the glass had ended up cutting Ruby, he felt a twinge of something that he had not felt much of since his childhood---guilt.

#25: Quitting. Ruby remembered how upset Jan had been when Ruby had announced that she was quitting her job at the Maltese Falcon Nightclub, especially when Ruby had said that it was because she was going to go with Baby Face to California; Ruby always wondered if Jan felt jealous of her for winning Baby Face's affections.

#26: Jump. He had not even noticed that she was in the room, and when he finally became aware of the fact after she softly called his name, he gave a jump of surprise before turning to look at her---and as he had known she would, she gasped in alarm when she saw how badly cut and bruised he was.

#27: Jester. It was obvious to Ruby that Baby Face still despised Micky a lot, the way he always derogatorily referred to him as a jester and other, more colorful things; Ruby sometimes wondered if, behind all the angry remarks, Baby Face saw in Micky what he possibly could have been, had his life been happier---but then again, she could not imagine him ever being like Micky; it seemed that such a thing would go completely against his personality, even under more pleasant circumstances.

#28: Jousting. Ruby sighed softly to herself as she listened to Baby Face and Tony engage in another bout of verbal jousting; when the two of them argued or debated, it could go on for quite some time, as they were both very stubborn and very opinionated; but ever since the period of time when they had been trying to gun each other down, it seemed to Ruby that they understood each other better, and she was glad of that.

#29: Jewel. Baby Face was going through some of the spoils that he had gained from a rival when he came to a sapphire ring; he turned it around a few times, studying it, and then told Ruby to try it on; she was surprised that he would give her such a valuable jewel, but she was also very touched.

#30: Just. She knew that some people would say that his fall from the balcony was only just and right, after the crimes he had committed, but she could never agree; the reason why he had fallen was because he had been trying to protect her from the madman who was now dead.

#31: Smirk. He leaned against the wall, looking at his nemesis, and gave a quiet smirk, so typical of him; Ruby stood to the side and watched, knowing that he was badly hurt already but that he would not give up the fight, and her worry for his safety only grew.

#32: Sorrow. The sorrow that Ruby felt was threatening to shatter her heart into millions of pieces---she could not bear that she had been the cause of that surely fatal plunge off the balcony, and she tried desperately to pull Baby Face into her arms, but she was trembling too much to be able to lift him, so she finally fell across his body, embracing him as she cried.

#33: Stupidity. Jade criticized her harshly when she figured out the truth of Baby Face's identity; of course she had always known that Ruby had a weakness for "bad boys," but she had never actually thought that her sister would have such stupidity to fall in with the mobster known as "The Most Vicious Killer in America."

#34: Serenade. Ruby sighed softly, feeling peaceful as the nearby ocean presented them with a free serenade; Baby Face leaned against the rock, his fingers laced on his chest, and did not seem to have much of a reaction, but when Ruby moved closer to him and laid her head on his shoulder, he hesitated a moment and then put his arm around her waist as he stared off into the distance, lost in his own thoughts; Ruby wondered if he even consciously knew what he was doing.

#35: Sarcasm. Baby Face had a biting sarcastic streak, when he never failed to use if he was losing his temper; it was only occasionally that he directed such sarcasm at her, and even though it hurt when he did, she would know that he was speaking in anger and that he did not actually mean it.

#36: Sordid. While Ruby of course frowned upon Baby Face's sordid lifestyle of stealing---and of what would happen when his temper would get out of hand---that did not change for one moment how she felt about him personally, and that was the one positive constant he had in his life, that he knew she would always be there and love him.

#37: Soliloquy. Oftentimes, when she would find him sitting alone at the bar and staring off at the opposite wall, she would wonder what he was thinking of and what sort of soliloquy was going through his mind at the moment; contrary to what many people believed, he was quite a deep, philosophical person, and sometimes he was willing to share his innermost thoughts.

#38: Sojourn. Ruby wondered how long their sojourn in California would last, and if they might possibly remain there for a long time yet; they had already operated there for over two years, and Baby Face did not seem particularly interested in leaving, which Ruby was fine with.

#39: Share. Ruby was quite willing to share her apartment with him any time when he wanted to get away from the other members of the mob for a while; he would always claim the couch at such times, and never rout her out of her bed or to try to climb into it with her; some people might say that he was a gentleman on such matters, but Ruby saw it as simply that he was uninterested; he had told her as much in the past.

#40: Solitary. He was a solitary person, and always had been; he did not know of anyone whom he had actually opened up with, but Ruby had seen more of his varying moods than anyone else, with the possible exception of Tony; they were the two people whom he was the most used to, and though he did not feel the same way about them both, he still seemed to have a certain deep connection with each of them.

#41: Nowhere. Baby Face was growing all the more angry with the strange desert that he was in; it seemed that he was getting nowhere, no matter how far he walked, and Ruby was still calling to him in the far distance---he wished that he could make her hear him before he went utterly mad.

#42: Neutral. From his expression, he looked as though he felt completely neutral about the entire matter, but Ruby doubted if that was the truth---since he usually seemed to have an opinion on everything.

#43: Nuance. Ruby could not quite pinpoint the occasion when her nuances had changed from infatuation to deep affection, though she clearly remembered the moment when she knew that she could not bear to live without him; certainly ever since then her life had never been the same, and she doubted that she would even be alive today if Baby Face had not rescued her from Ralph upon their first meeting.

#44: Near. She loved to be near him, even though he rarely gave any indication that the feeling was mutual; she had come to know that if he truly did not want her around, he would have left her long ago, and that gave her comfort and peace, to know that she was wanted.

#45: Natural. It was strange, in some ways---how natural it seemed for them to be together; both of them found it odd, but they found the thought that they had known each other before to be even more bizarre; neither could explain it, but neither wanted to bother trying---they just wanted to concentrate on the time they had in the here and now.

#46: Horizon. Ruby could see the sun rising on the horizon, and she observed it for a few moments from her bedroom window before deciding that she had better get breakfast ready; Baby Face would be awake soon, and he would want to eat right away.

#47: Valiant. Baby Face found Ruby to be very valiant, after all the dangerous adventures she had endured with him---and after all was said and done, she was still loyal to him, which meant more than he even knew how to admit and would not try to; he had gotten so used to her being around that he could not even imagine what it would be like if she was not there, nor did he want to.

#48: Virtuous. Ruby was also a very virtuous woman, which was something he found commendable in a world where it seemed that there were so few who even knew the meaning of the word; Vivalene, for instance, was the kind of woman he hated, and he imagined his mother to have been someone like her.

#49: Victory. His had been a victory, a triumph, over the person who had been harming Ruby, and she loved him for it, even as she felt as though her world was crashing down around her; surely, though, he would not die so easily, after having survived so much, even toppling over a waterfall!

#50: Defeat. She felt a strong sense of defeat as she leaned down, kissing him softly as the tears fell; he was physically dead, but Ruby felt as though she was emotionally and mentally dead, and she continued to kneel beside him, unable to think of how to get up---but then she heard him speak quietly to her, telling her that he could not stand it when she cried, and as she looked at him again she saw that he was awake and alive; immediately she embraced him again, joyously.

And holy cats, I'm absolutely certain I spotted Jimmy as an extra during one of the songs in The Desert Song. If I'd had a closer view of the guy I'd be positive, but it sure as heck looked just like him from what I could see! The time period would be about right, it was made in 1953, and the earliest known role of his was 1954, guest-starring on the Annie Oakley TV show.

Aubrie made me a lovely little mobster colorbar in return for me writing a testimonial for her. X3 I love it. **pets it.**

And I discovered that I can't write the bio for the home school graduates newsletter thing! **laughs.** I can only really talk about myself in that kind of a thing when describing what I like and don't like and why, so I'm recruiting Mom to write some of the other stuff. XD;

I like this set just as much as the first. >3 My faves were 1, 8, 9, 24, 29. And out of those, I probably liked 8 and 24 the best. Drinking makes things dramatic~~~! That and I think it reflects Baby Face's nature. For certain characters, like Rune, Kamikawa and Cadell, their addictions/habits reflect something on their personalities I believe.

Glade you like the colorbar so much! ^^ I was pleased how it came out myself.

XD; My bio would come out so sarcastic . . . and morbid. I'm curious to see what your Mom writes.
