Haven't done one of these in a while. A bonafide blurb, not a completed ficlit. This is part of something bigger, that I shall write eventually. It takes place in my T&D timeline, at about the point we're at now after The Fruits of Jealousy. But it doesn't really have anything to do with the current arc, save for showing how Sephiroth and Cloud behave differently around each other now after everything they've come through. I'm quite proud of it. X3 I like my mixture of detail and dialogue.

I'd wanted to get it done for yesterday's [livejournal.com profile] 31_days prompt, but it had other ideas and kept getting longer. XD

Basic premise, since it jumps right into the action: Sephiroth, Cloud, Zack, and Angeal have returned to the cave Jenova once used as a base, after rumors of monsters have begun to crop up. They are separated as they battle the creatures.

Cloud felt his heart twist as the floor, weakened by the tunneling monster, suddenly began to crack underneath Sephiroth and his opponent. The dog-like creature that was currently lunging for him was stopped by the birthing fissure, a yelp of surprise issuing from its wretched lips as it plummeted to its destruction. The sound echoed eerily from the hole, growing farther away until it was abruptly and sickeningly cut short. And Sephiroth, unable to stop himself, fell at the same moment. He gritted his teeth, grabbing in desperation for the edge of the widening crack.

Cloud thrust his sword into a stable rock, leaping forward as he crashed to his stomach. His arms outstretched, he reached to grab at Sephiroth's wrist.

"I couldn't do anything to help you the last time we were in here," he said behind gritted teeth. His hands made contact, his gloved fingers wrapping around Sephiroth's wrist and forearm. In return Sephiroth gripped at Cloud, his last link to the surface.

"It's cracking underneath you, too," he warned. "You'll fall as well as me!"

"No one's going to fall!" Cloud retorted. He got to his knees, straining to help pull the bigger man up. The space was not wide enough that Sephiroth could spread his wing. If he fell, would he even survive? Cloud had not tried to look into the pit, but the bottom was undoubtedly very far. The canine's howl was still playing in his ears.

A desperate plea began to run through his mind. Help me save him! I won't let anything happen to him this time. I won't!

He gripped harder, perspiration emerging on his forehead and beginning to roll down the sides of his face. Sephiroth was trying to use Cloud to support himself in climbing back up, but the cliff was smooth and it was almost impossible to get his footing. If Cloud could not hold onto him, he would fall.

And what if Sephiroth was right and they would both die? The floor was shaking harder underneath Cloud. He expected that at any minute a crack would begin to form between his legs, widening until it was useless to try staying up and he would tumble in, just as Sephiroth had started to do.

Sephiroth was climbing out now, kneeling on the edge as he tried to gather in his breath. But there was no time to stop and rest. His wing unfurled, and before Cloud could do anything more than cry in surprise, Sephiroth had encircled his arms around Cloud's waist and was lifting him into the air. The floor crumbled as the weight was released, unable to deal with the change in pressure.

And Cloud was not certain whether to feel much safer in his current position. He had only been carried by a flying Sephiroth once before, and that time he had been too ill to really care or take notice. Now he gripped at Sephiroth's arms, a keen sense of fear washing over him. Would Sephiroth be able to hold onto him? How far could he really hope to take them like this? Not that far ahead, the stalactites were hanging too low to hope to fly past them. The floor looked sturdy in that chamber, but would it really be? If that dumb tunneling worm, or whatever it was, had been over there too, they might end up with the same problem all over again.

"I hope you know what you're doing!" he burst out.

Sephiroth was flying them towards the chamber. "Are you afraid I'll drop you?" he asked dryly.

Cloud flamed red. "No," he mumbled. But he did not loosen his grip. Not until they were flying over his sword and he had to reach down to pull it up. Then he clutched the hilt, his knuckles white under his gloves.

He could not deny that he was relieved when they landed outside the chamber and found the floor firm. Sephiroth released the younger man, pulling the wing into his body again as stray feathers floated to the floor. To watch him, the events of the past few moments had not shaken or disturbed him at all. But that was typical of Sephiroth. It would be a worry if he did react.

Cloud gave a vague shudder as he noticed the incision in Sephiroth's flesh through which the wing had vanished. But then the silver hair fell over the opening in the dark coat, hiding the sight. Cloud had to admit that he was glad of that.

It was strange, he realized, as he followed the older man ducking and walking underneath the stalactites. After all this time, he did not actually know why Sephiroth had that wing. Sephiroth had gained his seven-winged form from the knowledge he had learned in the Lifestream, but somehow it did not seem that the sole black wing had always been only a part of that. And there was the matter of the incision, too. When he undid the Safer form, there were certainly not six other slices in his back. There was only the one, indicating a different origin for it.

Sephiroth stopped, bringing Cloud back to the present. He was standing in the middle of the chamber, surveying it with narrowed eyes. As in every other room they had explored, the stalactites and stalagmites were sending twinkles of light to each other, giving a soft glow to the space. This room was not as brightly lit as the largest one, which Cloud was still referring to as the statue chamber in his mind, but it was enough to show that the space held no secrets.

"The cave shouldn't glow like this." Sephiroth suddenly spoke, his voice resonating even though he had not raised it.

"Maybe it's some Earthy thing they haven't discovered yet," Cloud suggested, wandering over near the closest stalactite. It was certainly a sight that he had never seen before in a cave. It did not seem that the lights were being caused by something phosphorescent or fluorescent, but rather tiny, luminescent crystals that did not require other light before they would glow. It was like a world filled with natural lightbulbs that did not turn off.

"Maybe." Sephiroth began to move through the circular room as well, his footsteps echoing off the formations. "But it's more likely that it was created by the sorceress whom Jenova possessed."

"So the whole cave is full of magic." Cloud frowned, not certain he liked that thought. Magical properties were always so unpredictable.

"Yes, I would say so." Sephiroth stopped again, taking out his phone. He glowered at the No Service message that continued to flash across the screen. After they had become separated from Zack and Angeal, there had not been any way to contact them and discern whether they were alright. Zack and Angeal were probably looking everywhere for them, growing increasingly worried as time passed. He placed the device back in his pocket.

Silence fell between them. Cloud was somewhat awed by the chamber, as well as apprehensive at the thought of a sorceress's powers being responsible for it. Not just any sorceress, either---but the same one whose dark magic had encased Sephiroth in stone. Sephiroth, however, was not thinking of that at all; mostly what was on his mind was how to return to their friends . . . as well as other things.

". . . You took a harsh risk back there," he said at last.

Cloud froze. Then he looked away, embarrassed again. "I had to do something," he mumbled. "I didn't know how far it was to the bottom."

He slowly turned back. Sephiroth was watching him, his expression impassive as usual.

". . . I just stood there and didn't do anything when Jenova put you in stone." Now his voice had gained an edge. He clenched a fist, hating the memories that were swirling through his mind. He had not thought about that calamity for some time, but being in the cavern again was bringing it all to light.

No pun intended.

"I always hated feeling useless, like everyone was getting hurt around me and I could never do anything to stop it." He looked up into Sephiroth's surprised green eyes. "I could've done something that time, but I didn't! I just stood there . . ." He trailed off, his shoulders slumping as he gazed at the smooth floor. Sephiroth had looked right at him before the stone had covered his face. Then his stare had been frozen, for all time as far as Cloud had known.

He had still hated Sephiroth then, or so he had told himself. He knew now that he had really hated himself and he had used Sephiroth as an outlet for those feelings. Yes, Sephiroth had caused many of Cloud's sorrows and much of his heartache, but Cloud had blamed himself underneath it all. And, loathed former enemy or not, Cloud had not been able to stand that he had not even tried to help when Sephiroth had been in trouble.

"I always wondered why you looked at me," he spoke again, "if you were accusing me of not helping or something. That's what I started imagining, anyway."

"I don't remember why I looked at you." Sephiroth paused. "I probably wanted to tell you I didn't need your pity. Or I simply hated being seen by you in such a vulnerable state."

Cloud smirked. "Probably. But I decided to beat myself up over it instead."

Sephiroth grunted. "It wasn't as if there was anything for you to do about it," he said.

Cloud shrugged. "I still wonder," he said. "We'll never really know."

"I guess not." Sephiroth sounded unconcerned. Maybe he had finally managed to put the horror of those weeks behind him. Or maybe that was what he wanted Cloud to think.

Cloud sighed. "But so . . . yeah. I wasn't going to let it happen again."

Sephiroth was walking over to him now. But instead of speaking, he laid his hand on Cloud's shoulder. His pride tried to tell him that it was possible he could have struggled back up all on his own, but he knew it was not likely. Cloud had helped save his life this time. And though it was hard to know how to put it into words, he was grateful.

"You're not useless, Cloud," he said at last.

Cloud was embarrassed again. But also touched. Sephiroth would never say something to make him feel better unless he believed it.

Sensing that Cloud could not think of a satisfactory response, Sephiroth moved past him. "Let's go," he said. "We still have to find Zack and Angeal."

Relieved, Cloud hurried after him. "Right," he agreed.

They went through the back doorway of the chamber, passing into a corridor lined by stalactites and stalagmites on either side. Up ahead, more chambers were visible.

"Zack's probably fascinated by this place," Cloud remarked.

"Probably." Sephiroth began to walk up the narrow path.

There was just enough room for Cloud to walk beside him. He hurried to catch up, idly listening to the echoes of their footsteps. Their shadows on the walls were mysterious, especially as they passed through the crystal formations and changed shape. Cloud gave a slight smirk before sobering. There was still something on his mind. And maybe Sephiroth would not want to discuss it. But this seemed as good a time as any to try bringing it up.

". . . You made a pretty good save yourself," he said.

Sephiroth grunted. "It wouldn't have been very satisfying, if I had been pulled up only to have you fall."

A trace of a smirk returned. "Yeah, I guess not."

It faded. "I used to think all of your wings came because of the Lifestream or something," Cloud said. "But that isn't true, is it? I mean . . . is the black wing different?"

Sephiroth's posture stiffened somewhat, though he kept walking. "Yes," he said.

"Why do you have it?" Cloud persisted. He swallowed, wondering if the tension between them was only in his mind. Funny, how he would not have cared a few months ago.

But then the older man gave a weary sigh. "Shinra's Science Department had been conducting human experiments for years, as you know," he said. "Hojo and Hollander were both interested in seeing how humans could manage with wings."

Cloud could only stare. Of all things Sephiroth could have said, this was not something Cloud could have expected. A cold feeling began to form in the pit of his stomach.

"You . . . you mean . . . ?"

Sephiroth nodded. "Hojo did this to me," he said, his voice hard. "He bound me to the operating table, forcing me to stay conscious while he cut into my back and rearranged the nerves and muscles. But I don't remember the wing being attached. I had swooned by then."

The very thought made Cloud ill. "Sephiroth . . ." He reached for the other, but dropped his hand. Sephiroth must be angry with him for prying. Cloud would not blame him in the least.

Sephiroth paused, hearing the notes of regret and sorrow in Cloud's voice.

"I . . . I shouldn't have asked. I'm sorry."

Slowly, Sephiroth turned to face him. Cloud was staring down at the floor, the guilt obvious in his stance.

"I . . . I just wondered. I had no idea . . ."

"Of course you didn't. I didn't tell you."

Cloud blinked in surprise, raising his gaze to meet Sephiroth's. There was not any anger in the green eyes. Though Cloud was not sure what was there.

"Hardly anyone knows about this," Sephiroth said. "Zack found out years ago, by accident."

Cloud was surprised again. "You didn't tell him?"

"I did after he saw the incision."

Cloud frowned in confusion. "Would you have told him if he hadn't?"

Sephiroth looked thoughtful. "I don't know," he said. "Eventually I would have, if the right time had come. It isn't really good dinner conversation."

Cloud gave a grim smirk. "That's true." Then something else occurred to him. "Does Angeal know?"

Sephiroth nodded. "And Genesis," he added. "That's it, except for Hojo and those who were with him." He paused. "And I didn't have to tell you."

Cloud understood the meaning of those words. Sephiroth could have rejected Cloud's question. He would never feel obligated to tell someone anything if it was not a necessity . . . unless he wanted to. He had allowed Cloud to be part of a circle into which very few had been granted entry.

And Cloud all at once was overwhelmed.

Sephiroth's expression softened. "Come on," he said, turning back to the path.

Cloud nodded, unable again to find words. But he did not try.

Instead he walked alongside his friend.

This is great!

Ooh, wow! I can just feel the emotions in this piece! Yay that they're both OK! LOL at Cloud's comment that Zack is "probably fascinated about this place"! And he probably is!
Great work!

Thanks! ^^ I really like how this turned out.

Yeah, Zack's probably elsewhere looking at every stalactite and stalagmite, fascinated, while at the same time really worried about Cloud and Seph. XD

^_^

I like this a lot!

Even though you said it doesn't really belong in the arc, I hope you get it in there somehow anyway!

^__^

Thanks! Me too. LOL. Ideally, it comes before the next oneshot in the arc. Maybe I'll have to try challenging myself and see if I can get it all written. It'd be a way to practice Angeal some more, too.

This turned out great! I love how the cave was described.^^ It would be so awesome to see something like that!

Man, thinking of how Seph got his wing still gives me the shivers. It's just so horrible!

And yay for Seph and Cloud friendship!^^ I really like how Seph reasurred Cloud that he wasn't useless, and that he felt he could confide in him about his wing.

Thanks! ^^ Yeah, all those twinkling colors would be so gorgeous!

**nodnod.** I actually went and read Installation and I was horrified by what he went through. Even though I wrote the piece and I already knew what I'd written. XD;

X3 Showing their friendship was so much fun. I'm also trying to get more of Cloud's awkwardness and insecurity in now that he's calming down. Ha, he's so cute when he's embarrassed.

Yeah, it's the kind of thing that really makes you believe that Hojo's not even human! (Which, come to think of it, he really isn't by the time of the game - he had experimented on himself and actually turned into a monster. Fitting, actually. XD;)

Yeah, he is!^^ And his awkwardness definitely came through. I also like how Seph understood that.^^

So, I'm not sure, is this before or after that fic where Aerith is kidnapped? o-o

Yay, Cloud's in the circle! I wanna be in the circle too! We can be like a secret cult or something!

Oh. Yeah, it's after. ^^ Dang, I must have been tired when I posted this. That should say Weep Not for the Memories at the top, not The Fruits of Jealousy. **headdesk.**

LOL. XD

Awwww! X3 I love Cloud's reason for needing to pull Seph up; that's just so...."Cloud". XD

And the whole bit at the end about Seph's wing... Aw man, that was so good. *cuddles them both.* ^-^

Love it! Love it! Love it! xD

I loved it when Cloud was all "Sephiroth must be angry 'cause I pryed!" and then Seph was just like..."I didn't tell you." Kinda like...duh.

Awwwie...This is so cute. :3

Aww, thanks! ^^ I had so much fun with this, especially Cloud's insecurities and Seph's reactions.
