A musing on KH Cloud (and Seph)
Oct. 4th, 2007 04:41 amSomething I've been thinking about for the last several days.
In KH1, Cloud says that he lost and is searching for his light. I always interpreted this completely literally, that he fell into his own inner darkness and lost track of the goodness, or light, within himself. Some people seem to think he was referring to a person, possibly Aerith, since they reunited at the end of the game.
He also says he is looking for someone, and that he made the assassin contract with Hades because Hades promised to help him find this person. Instead of Aerith, I always thought he was looking for Sephiroth, hoping to kill him and conquer his darkness. As he says in KH1 Final Mix, "I've been looking for you." He never indicates that the person for whom he made the contract is his "light", if his "light" is even a person to begin with. I've always believed he was searching for three things: Sephiroth, Aerith, and his inner light.
In KH2, he makes it clear that he believes killing Sephiroth will extinguish his darkness. Heaven knows why he believes Seph is the literal personification of his darkness. Perhaps he is, like a Yami Marik of the KH verse, but there's never actually absolute proof that Sephiroth is such a being. Everything he says in KH2 could be interpreted in other ways. He could just as easily be a separate man, but feel that he and Cloud share their struggles with the darkness and hence, are "one" in that aspect.
The KH verse is so delightfully ambiguous.
