Humor rant!
Jul. 24th, 2009 01:34 amI'm still pondering on Dadnapped.
I barely found anything funny in the film, even though I suppose it was supposed to be a comedy. I expected this, the reason being that I've noticed Disney takes a different approach to humor these days. Instead of the humor coming from intelligent characters dealing with weird situations, the humor is supposed to come from stupid characters doing stupid things. I hate that! XD;
As an example: the original 1965 That Darn Cat! was absolutely hilarious. It depicted silly situations like the cat going into a drive-in movie theatre and running in front of the projector. A guy crawls after him and their silhouettes both show up on the movie screen. LOLOLOL. And the FBI and all law enforcement were treated with the proper respect.
The 1997 That Darn Cat! was ... really, really stupid. Not only was the idea of the kidnappers' identities really dumb (they were an old couple. WTH?!), but there was an absolutely pointless segment where two idiots fought over the name of a gas station. It bore no importance to the plot at all. And my mom, who sometimes finds some things funny when I don't, thought it was really stupid too.
But the worst thing was how the law enforcement officers were portrayed as complete buffoons. Not just Doug E. Doug's character (after all, you'd expect him to be a little screwy), but the other agents who follow the cat looking for the kidnappers. One guy lands in a yard with a vicious dog and has his pants tore off and is screaming like a kid and can't do anything for himself at all. **headdesk.**
Dadnapped features humor more akin to the latter variety. The police are mainly portrayed as bored idiots, and the bad guys are absolute nimrods (yes, quoting the main girl's favorite insult) who do absolutely idiotic things. The main bad guy is always whining about everything and really can't be taken seriously. The secondary antagonists just make me shake my head and sigh. I do have to admit I liked the sibling cuteness between them, though. XD;
Which brings me to my next point: the heartwarming and dramatic parts were right on the money. Disney can still do that! I think they should either stop making comedies and focus on the heartwarming/dramatic stuff, or else start using intelligent humor again. -.-
