More puzzles.
Oct. 28th, 2009 08:18 amAnother mystery that has been puzzling me ever since I became aware of it ... who the heck is David to Duke? XD; It's clear to me that in both versions they've known each other a while. Someone who has just been hired to be the store manager is not going to say "Dukey-boy" to his new boss, unless they're on very good terms.
In the original it's more confusing, however. I figured the idea for him to say "Dukey-boy" was inspired by the "Otogi-chan"s of the original, but I also originally thought he only said "Otogi-chan" once. He doesn't; he says it every time he addresses Duke by name, which is about three times. According to Yu-Jyo.net, the "-chan" term is for little kids, people you're trying to tick off, and lovers. Duke is not a kid and he wasn't ticked off; he took it all in stride. I'm thinking possibly David could be written off as an idolizing fanboy, since it sounds like the fangirls say "Otogi-chan" too.
But if this was translated correctly, this to me is the most confusing of all. Duke says that when Dungeon Dice Monsters takes off, David will receive some of the profit. That is not something you'd promise a random fanboy flunky. So ... are they supposed to be lovers in the original, or is there some other possible explanation?
I guess it's possible David's teasing about the "Otogi-chan"s, like he was clearly teasing when he said "Dukey-boy" in the dub. Thing is, he doesn't sound like he's teasing in the original. His tone of voice makes him sound like he absolutely idolizes Duke.
Anyone got an opinion?
Also, I'm going to write one or two Battle City-related Duke fics. One I was considering takes place near the beginning of Battle City. Duke encounters some Rare Hunters, who take him to Marik against his will. Marik is hoping to use Duke against Yugi, especially since Duke was an antagonist in the past. Duke refuses, so Marik tries to control his mind. But for some reason or another, Marik abandons the idea and erases Duke's memories of the encounter with the Millennium Rod, opting to go after Joey and Téa instead. Shortly afterward, Duke finds Tristan and Serenity in trouble.
I wanted it as sort of a fill-in that wouldn't destroy Battle City canon, but what would be a reason why Marik would decide not to use Duke? Would that even be plausible?
The other idea I wanted, I dunno if it'd be Battle City-related for sure, but it would involve Duke being tortured by someone. I always have the image when I listen to Evanescence's song Whisper that it's about someone being tortured. I'd idly considered it being Yami Marik doing the torturing, but if I was going to be a stickler for stricter canon (as I try to be now), it would have to take place during Battle City. I was thinking it would be after Noa's Arc. Is there a place between duels on the island when that could happen? And even if so, why would Yami M take the time to do it? Would Duke have been wandering, ended up encountering Yami M alone, and Yami M decided to have a little fun? Also, I was imagining physical as well as mental torture, and I'm wondering whether Yami M would decide to brainwash/mind-control Duke to go after the others.
Of course, if it was just going to be a blurb I'd just do it (because, heck, I've had Yami M torture Seph and Cloud and Zack), but for a full-fledged fic I want to make sure everything would be canonically plausible.
... Or would that all be too much in addition to everything else going wrong at Alcatraz Tower and I should just plan on it not being Battle City-related and someone else doing the torturing? In that case, I'd eliminate the brainwashing/mind-control idea.
