Fic Problems
Oct. 30th, 2009 11:15 amAUUUUUUUUUUUUUURGH!
Chapter 8 is giving me the most immense headache.
Someone's already ransacked Duke's apartment. They also left a threatening message on the mirror that they know Duke is alive and next time they won't make mistakes. Duke suspects someone will return to confront him, if they have even an inkling that "Otogi" is him.
The gang is a mixture of people from all walks of life. There are a few dirty cops involved. Now it's the evening of the day the will was read, the day after Otogi "flew in" in the late-night hours; he's been there almost 24 hours. The police would be checking into Otogi's identity, though they probably wouldn't have had much of a chance before the reading of the will, since Duke had previously arranged for that to take place right away. Duke was anticipating having to disappear and pretend to be Otogi before he was nearly killed, but even if he could have faked official documents like birth certificates, there would be no hard copies in government buildings. The only hard copies of anything relating to Otogi's existence would be his papers at the Tokyo branch of Industrial Illusions. And what kind of stuff would be on them? Would the police maybe do something like a procedure to fingerprint him to try to check his identity, since not only would they be having trouble getting records from America or Japan, but Otogi would have had a motive for killing Duke? Or if there wasn't such a procedure, would one of the dirty cops make it up to try to find out if Otogi is Duke?
And should something like that happen as opposed to someone breaking in again, as Duke fears they will? The gang is trying to convince David that someone is breaking in to test his reaction, but that doesn't mean it's really happening.
I need to find out exactly what happens when someone turns up to claim an inheritance and they're pretending to be someone they're not---how they fool people, etc. But that's only part of the problem.
If someone does really break in, what is it they want? The gang isn't going to try killing again right now. And if they want fingerprints/DNA, it would seem most logical to let the dirty cops handle that angle, if possible.
