Various Rants
Dec. 31st, 2009 10:19 amAnd so we come to the last day of the year. **yawn.** New Year's has never been a big thing for us, and I am honestly often cynical about the holiday to begin with. It's just one day changing to the next. What's the big deal? The new year never feels any different immediately anyway. One of Mom's childhood friends actually said she liked New Year's better than Christmas, which I absolutely cannot comprehend. XD; If she was Japanese or from some other culture where New Year's is the big family holiday instead of Christmas, or if she was from a background that didn't really celebrate Christmas, then I could get it. But since she wasn't ... **just shrugs in confusion.**
Last year was probably the only time I will ever get excited about New Year's. Ohmygosh, has it really been a year since I saw a Rockapella lineup in person for the first time? And I still haven't blogged about the second time, way back in August. But it was definitely one of the most squeeable, happy times I've had.
... And seriously? Téa scaring off the then-bullies Joey and Tristan in the very first YGO manga is cool, no doubt about that. X3 But overall, I'm annoyed far more by stuff she's done in the manga than I am by anything she's done in the anime. That whole thing where she and Yugi were at the amusement park and she kept trying to get Yami Yugi to come out ... blurgh. I actually didn't buy that volume for years, even though it has part of Bakura's introduction in it, because the amusement park story annoyed me so much. I mean, jeepers. She started getting other people in trouble, like screaming that the guy who invited her to go on the slide was a pervert. (And who knows, maybe he really was, but he hadn't done anything and she was only trying to get Yugi to think she was in danger. -___-;) And then when she really got in danger, she just kinda shrugged it off when it was over. I would have liked to have seen Yami Yugi yell at her for putting herself in such a position, or for her to apologize, or *something.* Yami Yugi didn't know what she was really doing, but he saw how reckless she was acting after the news of the bomber went out. He should have scolded her.
Years later, the whole episode in the manga annoys me just as much or more. XD; But I finally bought it for the Bakura squee.
In the anime, the only time I was ever annoyed by her was when she stuck her tongue out at Mai during Yugi's duel against Weevil and kept prattling about friendship. That was the *only* time *anything* she said about friendship got on my nerves, and it was *only* because she was being immature about it. She's still my favorite female character in the series otherwise. (Though for the manga, that title might go to Ishizu.)
And while I'm at it, the way Yami Yugi behaved in the first six/seven manga is *creepy.* All those Shadow Games and the illusions of people seeing weird things happen to themselves.... Sometimes he seemed sadistic and not much better than the other Yamis, considering what he was doing. But of course, motive is important, too, and when that's taken into consideration he's still above the other two.
... But I kind of picture Yami Bakura being a dark avenger like that eventually in my verse. He's trying to be relatively good, and deal out justice, but that's the whole problem---he's taking justice into his own hands. And he has a very selective justice, of course; he cares what happens to Bakura. And their cat. And that's pretty much it. He's not a great deal interested in humanity or their problems. XD;
Ah, Yami Bakura.... How I love writing for him. Classic, dark anti-hero in my verse. Though, actually, where his mortal life as Thief King is concerned, he seemed to start out as at least somewhat an anti-hero, seeking justice.... Then Zorc came in and he went crazy and was an all-out villain. ;___; (Though he acted pretty villainous during the fight with Mahado, I know. And of course, seeking the Items to open the door and forge a contract with Zorc ... **shakes head.** Bad, bad, bad. But it is understandable, at least, why he would feel like the Items should belong to him.) It looks like he started getting really bad off as soon as he got the Millennium Ring, so it possibly wasn't even his idea to ride through Egypt causing mass destruction. o.o He totally snapped. (Not that he wasn't a nutter before that.) But he's the most ambiguous character in the whole series, and with the Zorc mess, it's impossible to know how much was his idea and how much was Zorc's.
... And I totally love the scene in the manga where he says he cares about Bakura and then delivers a penalty game on the mean gym teacher. XD; I guess it's awful to like that, but ... **squee! It's canon protective/revengeful-for-Bakura's-sake Yami Bakura. XD;** It's been one of my favorites ever since I saw the Shounen Jump issue with that chapter in it.
I still wonder what happened about Bakura's hair, though, if it really is a rule at Domino High that boys can't have long hair. o.o Or was the gym teacher just making it up because he didn't like Bakura? If so, did he agree to let it go out of secret gratitude for Yugi rescuing him from the Monster World game piece?
