ladybug_archive: (bakurae)
I've often pondered on how, even though they're the same person, even though I write Yami Bakura being able to change between his forms due to the Infinity Ring, I still get a different perception of the character depending on whether he looks like the one we usually think of when we say "Yami Bakura" or like the Thief King.

Yami Bakura I usually think of as being closer to Bakura in age (quite naturally, since he's in Bakura's form and looks strikingly similar) and more reckless. Unless we're talking anime Duelist Kingdom Yami Bakura. Has anyone noticed how much different he is there compared to the later arcs? He seems much more serious, sneaky, older, and not reckless. But starting from Battle City on, he seems to take on a different, more wild persona. He even looks younger than he did in Duelist Kingdom. My guess as to the explanation is that his actions during Duelist Kingdom in the anime were invented by the anime writers and as such, that is their perception of the character. From Battle City on (until we get to where the anime really screwed his character up in Pharaoh's Memories), he's mostly closer to how Kazuki Takahashi actually wrote him. I actually really like him during the anime Duelist Kingdom. X3 Not that I don't like him later, but there's something about his more serious Duelist Kingdom self that really appeals to me.

However, his Battle City self is probably closer to Thief King in personality. SO. RECKLESS. And more unhinged. XD; And he really acts like the Thief King when he messes something up. XD;

In my Pendulum Swings verse, Yami Bakura in either form is serious, grouchy, and world-weary, but he's still masochistic and enjoys (even delights in) defeating his enemies. One time when I was going around LJ randomly, I found a Bakura RP journal wherein he talked about Yami Bakura after Yami Bakura received his physical, Thief King form again in their RP. He described his friend very interestingly, and though I can't recall all that he said, what stood out the most to me is where he said that Yami Bakura still had that bloodlust but it wasn't as prominent. And he was more wise and weary. He reminded Bakura, overall, of an old lion. I really liked that description. X3

Anyway ... that's kind of how I think of my version, too. And when he's in Thief King form, I automatically think of him as older and wiser. But even though, especially in my verse, they're exactly the same person and behave exactly the same, I *still* immediately think of him as younger and reckless when I picture Yami Bakura in the form from when Bakura held the Millennium Ring.

I think both he and I needed to revisit him being in the later form to see what we'd think of it after his release from Zorc's absorption. Hence why I wrote him as mostly in the Millennium Ring-era form during White is in the Winter Night. But then we seemed to decide that yes, Thief King form was the right way to go. I'm guessing he probably won't be changing back to the Millennium Ring-era form in any other stories.

... Unless I do something cracky and have it happen when he's extremely shocked/startled about something. XD; Which was how he originally found out he had that power; he woke up from a nightmare having subconsciously changed his appearance as he fell out of bed. And scared poor Bakura's father half out of his mind. LOL.
