Lately I've been watching a lot of Kojak via MeTV. And totally loving both it and the character. Kojak is a tough New York cop who knows how and when to be very kind and compassionate.

My dad doesn't like Kojak. He's fixated on Kojak's tough qualities and doesn't like characters like that. It makes me wonder why he likes Dan Mathews on Highway Patrol. They're really not that different, save for Kojak having a bit of that classic New York street-smart persona. Mathews would probably be very similar if he lived in New York. They're both always up on getting into criminals' minds and figuring out strategies and such.

Anyway ... I've been thinking about that along with my own dislike for Rainbow Dash. She's my least favorite of the main Ponies. I don't like characters who tend to be obnoxious and thoughtlessly rude, over-confident, and pranksters.

Nevertheless, I absolutely adore her coloring. And I've been thinking of getting the new plush of her at Wal-Mart. It's so soft and blue! And she and Fluttershy have known each other the longest, and I probably find theirs the most interesting friendship on the series. When the Fluttershy plush comes out next year, I definitely want her. And then I'd be happy to have Rainbow for another reason, since they're friends.

So I've been pondering over the character's good points and trying to focus more on them lately, since I'd like to enjoy having the plush for more reasons than loving both the color and her oldest friend. I've determined before that a lot of Rainbow's obnoxiousness and over-confidence is actually a front. She's been shown in several episodes to actually be extremely self-conscious and lacking self-confidence. In one episode, she is so utterly terrified of failure in a big contest that she keeps switching her entry number with the other entries until she's the last one to go. I can relate to that so hard, on certain matters. And Rainbow is proud; she isn't likely to ever admit to feeling so rattled (or in having a change of heart) until she's utterly pushed to it.

Of course, she's also extremely loyal. That's her trait among the Elements of Harmony. And she'll fight for a friend's honor, no matter what.

Looking at her in those ways definitely makes me like her a lot better. Sometimes it's hard to look beyond what I seriously dislike about her, but she really does have a lot of good in her.

I don't want to be someone who zeros in on the bad in a character and can't seem to see anything else. I've always seen the good in Rainbow, but I've never really tried to focus on it before. It's nice.
