... The more I see of the first season of The Virginian on my half-season set, the more I find it ... very strange. It can't seem to decide whether it should be a drama or a comedy, so it tries to be both at once. Just about every season 1 episode I've seen follows that idea, except maybe one of them.
For instance, I was watching one about twin sisters, and the one sister is so mentally deranged because all her life, her sister got all the love from their father and she never got any, and now she hates her sister and keeps trying to kill her. In the middle of all that, there's a really dumb subplot where Trampas is mad at the girl's boyfriend because he held a knife on him and Trampas keeps feeling like he wants to fight the guy. The guy knows Trampas could get really hurt, so he keeps refusing. The subplot is just silly and stupid, while the main plot is chilling.
Honestly, the way the show keeps having these pointless detours, I actually can imagine it having spawned the utter senselessness that is Laredo.
Compare that with season 6, where every episode I've seen is a complete drama. They don't seem to go to the chilling extremes of season 1, but they also don't have stupid humorous subplots.
Give me season 6 any day.
