I think I hit my first real dud on my search for various things. I watched Tony Rome and rather quite detested it. If it had been made in the forties I probably would have loved it, or at least, liked it more. Making it in the late sixties caused them to throw in a lot of innuendos and a couple of crude bits. Honestly, by the late sixties there are very few movies I like aside from Disney films.

But at least the whole reason why I watched the darn thing was not wasted. Simon Oakland had a very nice role as Tony Rome's client. And there was even some hurt/comfort later on when a hitman tried and failed to kill him. So I don't regret watching the movie. I would have done it sooner or later, to see him. But ugh, that movie was mediocre. And for the great majority of it I was confused out of my mind. I watched an episode of David Cassidy - Man Undercover afterwards to try to shake the rocks out of my head.

I really hope Bullitt is better than Tony Rome. Since it's culturally significant and the car chase is iconic I do have higher hopes for it.

Yesterday I watched The Big Valley episode The Secret and was thrilled. For the first time I saw Simon Oakland's character interacting with a kid. It was adorable! The whole plot of the episode was very dark and intense, too. And everything worked out in the end, which was awesome.

I'm still waiting on my first Riverboat DVD. Netflix sent a copy last week, but some moron had scratched it up and sent it back to them like that. So I've been waiting on my replacement, which should have come Monday but was scheduled for Tuesday and didn't arrive on either day. If it doesn't come today, I am going to be very annoyed. The next time I have an Amazon gift certificate handy I think I'll just buy the three-disc set. I know I'm going to want it, for Darren McGavin. I got so annoyed last week that I watched an episode elsewhere (and only later realized it's one that's on the DVD and hence, I would have rather waited to see it in higher quality on the DVD). I loved Darren's scenes.

I also rewatched I Want to Live! yesterday. It's the first time I've seen it since Simon Oakland has actually meant something to me. I love the role he has in that, of the tough but compassionate real-life journalist Ed Montgomery. And even when I didn't know who the heck Simon Oakland was, I loved that role. So now it's even more special to me.

Bulitt is an interesting film but definitely not a favorite of mine. The car chase is pretty cool & I guess you can see it's influence on later cop movies. It is also one of the first films I think to show the more mundane aspect of being cop. But it is slow at points & the relationship between Mcqueen and his girlfriend brings down the film for me.

The 60's are very far from my favorite decade for film (and if anything I think foreign cinema was stronger than Hollywood at this point) but there are a few films from the late 60's I really like.

I mostly want to see Bullitt for Simon Oakland, so I'm sure I'll enjoy his scenes, if nothing else. But I do hope the movie as a whole will be better than Tony Rome. Are there any sex scenes in Bullitt?

Oh, which are those? I'd love some Hollywood recommendations for that era.

There might have been I don't actually remember

Films from 1967-1969 I enjoyed (in no order)
The Lion in Winter
Wait Until Dark
Planet of the Apes
In the Heat of the Night
Cool Hand Luke
Bonnie & Clyde (although this is definitely on the violent side)
Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid (if you like buddy films that is one of the best)
Zeffirelli Romeo & Juliet
2001: A Space Odyssey (definitely unique to say the least)

Oooh! Wait Until Dark! I do love that one.

Planet of the Apes was basically really good, albeit definitely discouraging with the twist ending. It's very powerful, though.

I've wanted to see Bonnie and Clyde, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

I saw some of 2001: A Space Odyssey and was rather bored out of my mind. I'd like to give it another go, however; the case of Hal has always fascinated me.

I think 2001 bores a lot of people hence why I said it is unique. XD

But I was fascinated by it and couldn't stop watching (although the HAL sections were definitely my favorite parts. I have a thing for artificial intelligence). :)

Although if I have to pick a favorite from the above list it might be Cool Hand Luke but that might be because I saw it fairly recently and it really stands out to me (it's what made me fall in love with Paul Newman). :)

LOL. Yes, it's definitely that.

Artificial intelligence is a fascinating subject, and sometimes eerie, when it gets to the point HAL got.

I looked that one up a few minutes ago, as I know nothing about it, and it does sound interesting!

Jimmy Murphy has a cameo appearance in Somebody Up There Likes Me! He's a guy at the gym in an early scene who talks to the ... coach?

Nope I haven't seen any of those yet but thanks for the recs :)

So far I think the only Newman films I've seen are the two I mentioned above (Cool Hand Luke & Butch Cassidy), The Sting, and Hombre.

There are definitely a lot more I need to see. :)

Kind of funny how we saw completely different films of his and are both fans. Shows he made a lot of great movies.

Butch Cassidy is a great buddy film. And as I said to [livejournal.com profile] insaneladybug above Cool Hand Luke is excellent and definitely a must see.

Those are pretty good choices. I think they're all early sixties.

Yes, that's the one I watched to clear my mind! The friendship was very squeeable. I was glad things worked out; Benny was an easy character to have a soft spot for.

I love both brothers, although I'm probably more familiar with Shaun because of the Hardy Boys. I always wanted to see a lot of The Partridge Family and I just didn't have the opportunity. Antenna TV airs it now, and I'm hoping to start catching it frequently.

It did look like they had a nice house! I don't know if I'll be watching much of that show, but I certainly enjoyed Simon's guest-spot.

Scratched discs are so aggravating. If they scratch a disc, they should be big enough to report it.

They finally sent a playable disc, and I am in love with the show and Darren's part in it!

Yeah. The sixties was a real transitional period for movies. They couldn't quite seem to decide where they wanted to go with them. It's interesting, that while movies weren't usually that great, TV shows also transitioned, but flourished, in the sixties.

Showboat is glorious! Another of the few musicals I am in love with.

Yesss, the sixties was a goldmine for TV lovers.

Fiddler on the Roof is one of my favorites too! I'm not sure I'm familiar with Good News at all. Anchors Aweigh I know about, but haven't seen. And I need to see Carousel again; it's been a long time. I do remember I decided it was more depressing than West Side Story, which is a musing I plan to write up soon.

Good News does sound cute!

Yeah, it is neat that he gets to see what happened to his family!

The first few minutes of the movie I've never seen, so I'm not sure I've seen the star-polishing bit.

If Anchors Aweigh is the one with Sinatra & Kelly I LOVE that one too (it's my favorite of the 3 movies they made together).

And Fiddler on the Roof is probably my favorite movie you know if someone put a gun to my head and forced me to pick just one that is what I would say!

I think I've said to you before I LOVE Stalag 17 as well and The Great Escape (those are definitely the two best WWII POW films but I really adore the genre in general).

However my favorite POW film is probably La Grand Illusion (this is WWI based but was made in 1937 in response to what was going on in Europe).

Oh and yeah I adore Frank & Gene, they had great chemistry together and AA is definitely my favorite of their films. It's just so darn sweet!

Oh, and thank you for the lovely review! Now I'm having the trouble you've been having, where the darn site won't let me send PMs!

I would need to see Sapphire and Steel first, and there's no guarantee that I'd get plunnied for it, but if that happens when I do see it, you'll be the first to know! I'm already getting a Riverboat plunnie.

I'll keep those in mind!

If the plunnie expands enough, I'll definitely work on it! I was watching The Fight Back (which I am absolutely in love with now) and was intrigued by the part where Grey mentions he was knifed by that guy seven years ago. I feel like writing a hurt/comfort fic involving that experience.

By the way, did they ever show a flashback to when Grey first won the Enterprise? I had thought originally that the first episode would show that, since the way he won it is described in all these summaries of the show.

Yesss, hurt/comfort makes everything so interesting! I'm loving all the hurt/comfort the show has so far, although I'm amused at how many times the characters are ending up with their arms in slings. Can't the writers get a bit more creative with the kinds of injuries sustained?

Interesting! Who was in Iron Horse?

I wonder if Grey just mentioned how he won the Enterprise in one episode. Otherwise, if there's nothing in the show about it at all, it puzzles me as to why how he won it in a poker game is such common knowledge as to be plastered all over every summary of the show, as though it's an important plot point.

LOL. Wow. Poor Kirby! That definitely does sound like a true hurt/comfort fest, though.

Awesome! I imagine that would give his roles an even more special meaning.

Very true. Or maybe it was something in, say, a press release and was meant to be brought out in the show and they never followed up on that angle for some reason.

Bleh at hitting the dud. It's inevitable that you'll have a favorite actor in a movie you don't like--I can't bring myself to watch The Running Man, even if Richard Dawson has such a major role in it.

But yay for seeing other good stuff!

And bleh again at the scratched disc. I'm dealing with a similar problem--my KH2 disc is starting to freeze up. It's secondhand, and has scratches on it, but it never acted up until I tried picking up where I left off yesterday. The first playthrough when I first got it was fine, and so was the second playthrough, which I stopped after reaching Port Royal at the end of winter break, since classes started again. I brought out the PS2 yesterday, and Port Royal took *forever* to complete because it kept freezing (often in mid-battle) and while it usually picked up fine, I had to restart the system a couple times (at one point, it couldn't even read the disc). Now that I'm out of Port Royal, it's working better--in Halloween Town now, and it's only minor freezing now that clears up in a few seconds (but it's still annoying). But it's still weird that Port Royal got so messed up when it was fine last time.

To make sure it wasn't the machine, I put Sonic in, and that worked fine (but oy, I've gotten rusty. Eggman clobbered me. XD;). So methinks I'll have to buy a new KH2 disc--which isn't so bad, as they're running for $16 new on Amazon...

From: [identity profile] insaneladybug.livejournal.com
I can't remember; did you ever specify why it is that you don't like The Running Man? It seems like you did, once.

Ugh. How frustrating! Yeah, getting a new disc sounds like a good idea at this point.

Well, I mentioned before that it was because Richard plays a particularly nasty villain, but it's also because it is quite violent with cursing to boot (and it's rated R because of the violence--within the first five minutes, some poor guy loses his head. O.O)

Do you have Netflix by any chance. Maybe you can get a trial account and watch Running Man. It's on Instant Netflix.

I don't like the movie itself at all (but then I hate those type of dumb action movies) but I do think Richard is great in the film. I think he steals the picture. He plays a parody of himself and also shows that he is not above making fun of himself and the whole "ego thing". Yeah he plays a villain but sometimes villains can be fun (honestly I was cheering for him throughout the movie LOL)

I was actually trying to get Rose to give it a chance since she loves Richard (I wasn't sure how much you liked Richard). XD

Like I said I really dislike the movie as someone who is a bit of a film snob. I would never watch it if not for Richard. Well actually I mainly fast forwarded to his parts. But yes he plays a parody of himself and if you get this he is absolutely hilarious in the movie. You can tell Richard is having a lot of fun!

And he has the best line, Arnold (don't feel like typing out his last name lol) says his famous "I'll be back" line and Richard is like "only in a Rerun" :D
From: [identity profile] insaneladybug.livejournal.com
After what Crystal's told me in the thread above I don't think I'd care for The Running Man myself. Not because of Richard playing the villain (I'm just not familiar enough with him to particularly care one way or the other), but because of the other things.

But he plays a parody of himself? LOL, I thought that movie was serious.
From: [identity profile] kirarakim.livejournal.com
Oops and I just replied to the deleted comment :)

But he plays a parody of himself? LOL, I thought that movie was serious

But to add to the above, it's a dumb action movie. Not really that serious. Richard is the best part. Even Roger Ebert said so much and I don't think he is biased in Richard's favor like myself lol

Ebert's Review
From: [identity profile] insaneladybug.livejournal.com
LOL. Ah, I thought you meant that you were collectively calling all action movies "dumb."

That review is interesting. The movie is very different from what I thought it was.
From: [identity profile] kirarakim.livejournal.com
Nope although a lot are (especially from the 80's) but there are good films from every genre. This just isn't one of them. :)

Actually the only Arnold S film I like is "Kindergarten Cop. I wouldn't necessarily say that was a great movie either but I watched it all the time as a kid and well nostalgia kicks in. :)
From: [identity profile] insaneladybug.livejournal.com
Ahh.

I've always thought that movie looked funny. LOL. I may have seen some of it once, but I can't remember.

I kind of liked Terminator 2. The friendship squee in it, and how the robot began to change, made me enjoy it.
From: [identity profile] kirarakim.livejournal.com
As a kid I probably just enjoyed that there were other kids in it. lol

I've actually only seen parts of both Terminator movies so I can't comment on that one (I know that is considered a Classic action movie so I expect it is better than most).
From: [identity profile] insaneladybug.livejournal.com
Probably. LOL. At that age, it's hard to relate to a film with just grown-ups.

It is pretty good; deserving, I think, of that status as Classic.
