ladybug_archive... Why is it that, even though I still love both Darren McGavin and Simon Oakland dearly, I seem to have flipped from crushing the most on Darren to crushing the most on Simon? ![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
dangelos_song had it right when she said I had it bad for Simon.
Actually, I can pinpoint when and how it mushroomed (even though it had already been heading in that direction). It was the second time I watched The Night Strangler and realized how much Tony was trying to do for Kolchak when Kolchak just didn't seem to recognize or appreciate it. From that point, I never could quite feel the same about Kolchak. And though I'd liked Tony for ages before that, he grew in my admiration and esteem afterwards. That seems to have expanded into a huge crush on his actor.
I do think Kolchak changed by the time he and Tony got to Chicago. He was still aggravated by Tony, but somehow he seemed more appreciative than he did in the movies. And in the comics, he has flat-out acknowledged that Tony has tried to help him many times. In the story Pain Most Human, after Kolchak ends up absolutely devastated by something that happened to him, he tells Tony that he's been a "good, decent, and much misused friend." He also says that he's tired of getting Tony fired and for Tony to get away from him while he still can. Tony outright refuses, exclaiming, "Have you lost what little sense I thought you had?!" He goes on to say that he hates it when Kolchak gets human and tells him to sit back down; they can't have all of New York thinking they're having a lovers' quarrel. (I giggled so much over that.) And it's a comfort to Kolchak when Tony is adamant about staying with him. Eeee, that story has such wonderful friendship squee! Sometimes Moonstone really pulls off some amazing things.
One thing is certain: you can't have one without the other. Their dynamic is awesome and unmatched. Darren and Simon brought those characters to life as no other actors could hope to do. And even though I've switched to crushing the most on Simon, I still adore them both and thrill to watch things that either of them are in.
... And the Black Sheep Squadron episode Forbidden Fruit is awesome and squeeable. Yes.

Date: 2011-06-22 03:24 am (UTC)For me, it started with Tony, too, and then mushroomed after hearing him sing... I'm a sucker for a good singing voice. Oh, and I did skim through that Virginian ep--exceptional acting from Simon there, especially at the end. ♥
Yes, that scene in "Pain Most Human" makes it worth it all. **pets the scene** I squeed so much (quietly, since I was reading in public...XD) when I saw him outright call him his friend and feel regret for getting him fired--and then Tony not leaving. Eeeee, indeed!

Indeed, which makes me wonder what the post-Tales of the Night Stalker ones are going to be like...

I adore that Virginian episode. That ending scene is just wonderful. And I love how the sheriff puts the clock back at the right time, which said to me that he developed some respect for Simon's character.
It would have been so wonderful if the TV show had ever done something like that. As much as I love the TV show, it pretty much followed a formula and didn't want to branch out. Which is one of the things Darren was upset about, actually. I often wonder what he thought of the Moonstone revival. It started several years before he died.
Honestly, I really don't know that there will be any post-Tales of the Night Stalker stuff. There's another comic series started now called The Night Stalker Tales, but from the little I know I figured it was either in the same timeline, before he got fired (or else re-hired), or that he and Tony are working somewhere else. After the wonders Moonstone has done, I really don't think they would separate Kolchak and Tony, at least not for very long. And I'm pretty sure Jeff Rice, the creator, would frown on it. He's the one who insisted that Kolchak would be timeless and that the period would move to the present day without aging anyone.
I've been on that wavelength for quite some time now. But I still love stuff that Darren's in too; I catch new Riverboat episodes whenever I can find them (and I got the best episodes boxset), and I badly want to see more of Mike Hammer and all of The Outsider.
It is squeeful.

Date: 2011-06-22 04:27 am (UTC)Yeah, I had heard that Darren was getting a bit frustrated with the formula--I wonder if that's why he never reprised the role, even when the X-files creator asked him to as a guest appearance--so they made the new character Aurthur Dales for him to play. I do wonder what he thought of the Moonstone revival, too. Hmm...
**nods** Well, that's good that they would never separate them, at any rate!
LOL. Yeah, I really want to see the Outsider--especially since there's an ep with Simon in it.

Yeah, I just can't believe they ever would.
