So the Pony episode this past day was really good; I think it was another of the best ones this season. But for me, that was just an appetizer before the entree, the Equestria Girls movie!

I was worried that someone might not put it up tonight, so I decided to try to get in on a live stream, even though those have never worked for me. I tried one on The Brony Network after being unable to find a YouTube one, but the connection just didn't hold. I went back to YouTube and figured I'd watch the first ten minutes clip that's been up, and instead I found a live stream that wasn't in my previous search for some reason. By that time the movie was already on, but I was able to get in on a good chunk of it. The stream kept cutting out and I'd have to start over, but I got to see many of the best parts. And then someone did put it up, so I've been able to see it in full now!

Eeeee, I'm so excited for the DVD release on the 13th.... I wish it would be in time for my birthday, but I'm glad the wait isn't too much longer.

Honestly, I seriously adored the movie. Sunset Shimmer really came into her own and is, I think, pretty much the leader of the group now just as Twilight is the leader back in Equestria. I was a little worried that bringing in the human Twilight might mean Sunset would have to go back, but it looks like she's staying! I'm so happy. And there's the hint of more adventures to come when she said that there would probably be more magical problems in the future.

Sunset has learned so much and it's so great to see. And I love when she got protective about her friends' safety and chewed out human Twilight for experimenting with things she didn't understand (even though at the same time I winced since human Twilight never meant for anyone to get hurt). But then Sunset felt so bad over what she'd said almost immediately, since she realized that too. Her facepalm seemed to clearly say, "I've blown it again."

Human Twilight eventually got overwhelmed by the magic her device was collecting in order to analyze it and that's how she turned into the rumored Midnight Sparkle being. And just as I'd hoped, Sunset faced off against her, stopped the magically induced rampage, and got through to Twilight (with Spike's help). It was like the climax of the first movie in reverse. She's really paying forward the good that she has been taught and it was just what I wanted and I'm so excited by it.

Also, I think that judging from human Twilight's reaction to becoming Midnight Sparkle, we can definitely take from that that the magic overwhelmed Sunset Shimmer in the first movie and the stuff she did while under its effects was not the true her. Even when she was at her worst, I don't think she would have done or even considered the stuff she did after the magic got hold of her. I always thought that, but this is further confirmation, to my way of thinking.

Somehow this movie gave me a strong sense of nostalgia, moreso than the other movies did. I think it's because for once, the girls were united all the way through instead of spending time arguing or letting misunderstandings split them up. And their togetherness, combined with the high school setting, the general plot, and the really good morals, remind me of book series I grew up with, especially The Baby-Sitters Club books. Of course, there were arguments in those sometimes too, but the ones I remember most fondly are not those installments. I just really really love these movies and hope they'll continue for a long time, or that there might even be a TV series, as was the original idea way back when. Although a series might not keep to the same quality level as the movies, in which case I'd rather just keep having movies.

The movies are just so happy and uplifting. I always feel good after watching them (and get the songs stuck in my head). It's like a happy part of my childhood came back in a new form. And I really love the balance they have between the magic and the real world. I hope it never becomes like Winx Club, where the magic is the thing all the way. I like the real world setting and the human characters; it makes it easier to relate to. Granted, the Pony world counterparts are pretty much more adorable because it's so cute to see Ponies doing the things humans do, but I really love the human world because of being able to relate to it. And I still prefer Sunset as a human. I think she's happier in the human world than she ever was in Equestria. I hope she always gets to stay. It's neat to have that link with the series too, for one of the characters to have been a Pony who chose to stay human, instead of having always been human like the rest.

I also hope the movies will keep on being mysteries the girls are solving. That kind of reminds me of Trixie Belden books, where it's a group solving the mysteries instead of one or two. I like how the mysteries are paranormal, yet it still feels basically like the real world. It's kind of hard to explain, but that just really appeals to me. It just fits the characters and setting perfectly, instead of it being like Winx Club, where they're in a universe that's all about magic, or like dealing with real world crooks and such. Somehow fighting magic seems ... safer than fighting bad guys with guns, etc. Even though it probably really isn't, heh. But in spite of the magic elements, it's still the real world and it's the present day and there's technology and such. And magic is a unique feature, not a staple. It's a perfect balance.

Also, I always get excited because it's so uncanny how Sunset Shimmer runs these accidental parallels with the way I developed Snakes' character. They're both antagonists who ended up being shown true friendship and wanting to turn their lives around and are trying to figure out what friendship is about. And now one of my RP versions of Snakes is starting to try to pay forward the good he's been taught. It's very interesting how RPs can grow and develop and things like that can happen without it being planned on at all. I have no idea how that will turn out, but it's just kind of neat to explore that side of Snakes no matter what comes of it.

I just wish I had a place to really share my enthusiasm with other movie fans. The LJ comm is so dead. And the Pony forum I'm on is so often critical of both the TV series and the movies. Sometimes not without cause, but they also nitpick a lot instead of being able to enjoy the good. I have certain complaints of my own, especially with the series, but I still love it in spite of its flaws. Its missteps haven't reached Once Upon a Time levels of bad; hopefully that will never happen.

Ah well. Overall, such a really satisfying evening and a perfect early birthday present. I'm ecstatic.
