I can't seem to make myself concentrate on the ghost town fic. I've got the beginning done, and a little bit here and there; I wrote an intense and creepy scene out of order where Mel Barnes (the character from that Bonanza episode) possesses Kolchak to torment Tony and try to strangle him. But unlike with the mirror fic, when I wrote the ending first, that did not spur me on to work on the parts that came before.

It may be because I have written stories about two other ghost towns, both based on the same Hardy Boys ghost story. And it gets a bit difficult to make each of these towns somewhat different from the others. I think I know how to make this town different from all the rest, though, thanks to the Partridge Family song that inspired the whole thing to begin with. And thanks to Mel Barnes, the psycho creep, who will probably play the largest role in what happens to Kolchak and Tony in the ghost town.

I may also be having trouble because I feel a lot better about that fic I was tinkering with on the weekend. I came up with a darker explanation for what happened to Kolchak, which suits me much better than some astral-projection thing. The only humorous thing I really wanted was Tony's initial reaction to seeing a ghostly Kolchak, which I can imagine would be classic. Crystal encouraged me too, and I ended up writing another scene. Tony is the only one who can see Kolchak because he cares about Kolchak enough to be able to. The sorceress who struck Kolchak down is enraged; she didn't think anyone would care about him enough to see him. I don't know whether I'll really write out the whole fic of this, but it definitely will be so much different than the one I did with Mr. Zero, so I might. Also, this one is more from Tony's point-of-view, while the Mr. Zero one was from Kolchak's, so that makes a big difference too.

Thank you! Hopefully I'll be able to work on it this morning. I still have to type up some that I wrote on a piece of paper Sunday night. I really do want to get this one done; Mel Barnes is going to make it terribly creepy. And Kolchak will end up going through a lot of emotional torment over Barnes possessing him to try to kill Tony.

Last night, quite by accident I saw James MacArthur in the movie The Bedford Incident. It has a rather depressing ending, but it's a very interesting movie. It's like an update of Moby Dick.

And this morning I saw that Tucker's Witch episode! I loved it. Dickens was adorable and I really enjoyed Simon Oakland's role.

I loved the second Riverboat disc, although I didn't watch the Fort Epitaph episode since it's one of the two Darren isn't in and Burt Reynolds was gone by then too. I'm fairly indifferent to Burt, but I love his character's interaction with Grey. It's a shame the actors just couldn't get along. Do you have any episode recommendations with hurt/comfort? I've been loving the amount of Grey hurt/comfort I've been encountering.

I hope you enjoy it in spite of the depressing ending! I liked it a lot better than Fail-Safe (which was on right before it). It must have been a night to show movies with unsatisfying endings. LOL.

I like the episodes when Burt is there, since I love his character's interaction with Grey. I was sad when his character started being phased out and then was gone altogether. It felt lonely without Ben Frazer. I need to see more of the later episodes to really judge; I wasn't that impressed by Zigzag and didn't finish it. Of course, Darren was barely in that one, so maybe if he had been more of a presence I would have liked it better and finished it.

Well, one thing about me: I use hurt/comfort collectively to include "whump", since I didn't know a term for comfortless hurt for years and I don't care for the term "whump."

On the three-disc set, there was a lot of hurt without comfort in The Path of the Eagle and The Fight at New Canal. I felt awful for Grey, but I certainly enjoyed the escapades and my hurt/comfort cravings shot sky-high. It's like peanuts; I can't get enough. I want to write some kind of a friendship thing with him and Ben where Grey is badly hurt, maybe shot. It would be a different fic than the proposed one showing the night Grey was knifed by that prisoner, since Ben didn't remember the guy and it seems that if he had been around he would remember a guy knifing Grey.

That's definitely true in a lot of cases. I'm one of the few fans of the Bowery Boys films who prefers Duke over Slip, and possibly some of that is because I saw Duke first. But I also think it's because Duke appeals more to my personality, since I tend to prefer his type over Slip's in other things.

All of those reasons could have definitely contributed to not liking Burt's character. Now I'm curious: What is his character on Gunsmoke like?

Watching with an open mind is a good idea! I fell in love with Ben and Grey's friendship from the first time I saw them interact.

LOL. Us early h/c and/or whump lovers. I became a fan of it when I was around four or five. No one told me it was sick, but I figured it was on my own and went through a period where I didn't want to talk about at all (although before that time period, I'd been doing hurt/comfort scenarios in role-plays with my mom). I was overjoyed to get online and discover that I wasn't some sick nut (or at least, if I am, I have plenty of company).

I wish there was an alternate term for comfortless hurt. LOL. "Whump" just sounds so silly. And so inappropriate when the injury is worse than a bump on the head.

I suppose by strict definition, I lean more towards "whump" sometimes. I like to drag out scenes as long as possible before reviving characters. Even though that's often not really possible in my scenarios.

Ahhh, I see. I guess I'd have to see him in action to judge.

Festus I've seen. He doesn't always seem so bright, but he's certainly amusing and colorful.

LOL. Yes.

That's hilarious that there was a real sound like that.

Haha, yes, it certainly seems like the writers must have known people liked it!

I definitely think I've improved in my h/c and whumpish offerings over the years.

Awww. That's awesome. I'll have to check into The Intruder! What are the episode titles of the others you mentioned?

I don't mind CGI in some cases (it made The Lord of the Rings amazing). But when it looks obviously fake and doesn't match the rest of the movie/TV show, then there's a problem.

Thank you for the recommendations! I think I'll try Island in the Desert first. Wow.

I don't think I even realized they used CGI in anything much other than sci-fi and fantasy, and maybe action....

I dug up the Riverboat episode The Landlubbers and watched that. So nice and suspenseful! I far prefer the adventurous episodes to the ones that focus more on Grey's love life (with the exception of The Path of the Eagle, with Marion). I tried watching Race to Cincinnati (the one with Anne Baxter) and her flirting drove me out of my head within a few minutes. I still need to watch the rest.

And Simon Oakland plays good guys in the early Gunsmoke episodes How to Cure a Friend and Overland Express! I'm particularly in love with the latter.
