Brief Musings and The Outer Limits

I think I've determined that my most favorite West Side Story characters are Schrank, Krupke, and Doc, then Maria, Anita, and Bernardo. Of the Jets, I'm partial to Baby John, Anybodys, and Ice. However, I actually didn't notice/like the Jets as much as some of the other characters. Also, sometimes I feel like they got a little too much screentime in comparison with the Sharks.
A oneshot idea hit me in the head the other day and I've since quickly jotted it down and posted. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7210006/1/ It involves Doc and Schrank interacting, something that intrigues me a lot.
I've also continued to muse on this Perry Mason fic. Tentatively it might be called The Case of the Persecuted Prosecutor. I think it would open with some hot-head criminal threatening Mr. Burger in court. Then later something would happen and he would apparently turn up dead. The readers would learn he was alive before the other characters did, but the readers would probably be led on a bit too.
And finally this weekend, I saw a couple of Outer Limits episodes I haven't ever seen before, except for brief excerpts: I, Robot and Keeper of the Purple Twilight. They were both really good and deep. And Edward Platt was in the latter! That's the third Outer Limits episode I've seen him in.

Date: 2011-07-23 08:56 pm (UTC)So I guess that Schrank and Riff would be my favorites, because of the guys who played them (in different productions, but, still...). And Doc is awesome, too.
Ah, yeah, you're good at leading your readers on when it comes to character death. While I knew that Tony would pull through in Game of Darkness, back in '07 when you wrote The Dance, I seriously thought that Seto had bought it. And that was a bit of a stunner for me at the time because I'd been following all your previous fics two years prior and read all of Seto's Disney deaths, and my initial reaction upon reading The Dance was "OMGosh, she actually did it!" I should've known better, of course, LOL...
And sweet, I had no idea that Edward Platt was in some of those--I had only looked into Simon's and I still need to see Richard's. I must look into Edward's. Yes. I have seen Edward's ep of Twilight Zone, though--quite a while ago, but I remember it well. A cowboy from the old west is searching for a general store to buy some medicine for his very sick son, and ends up going through a time portal to the modern times (which, of course, was the 60s then)--Edward plays a modern-day doctor puzzled by his Old West appearance.

Edward Platt is also in The Man With the Power and ... I always forget the name of the second one, but it's one where an alien shows up trying to teach gifted young kids about advanced scientific concepts in the hopes of using them to conquer Earth. It might be called The Special One, but I'm not sure.
That sounds like a very interesting episode of The Twilight Zone!

Date: 2011-07-24 04:48 am (UTC)That's really a shame. I'm sure it's just as good. I have a long list of episodes from that which I want to see, including many you've mentioned.

Date: 2011-07-24 06:05 am (UTC)I'll have to look up The Wounded Don't Cry, definitely!

Date: 2011-07-24 06:23 am (UTC)Thanks! That would be, yeah.
Oh, I've seen some of The Wild, Wild West too! Simon's episode, barring the real-life accident, was absolutely hilarious and fun. And I also saw a haunted house episode, Night of the Man-Eating House. That was creepy but awesome. I'll definitely be watching more of that show.

Date: 2011-07-24 07:08 am (UTC)Haha, I wish the same thing. I would love to learn Japanese someday, but it seems to be so jaw-dropping complicated and complex.
It's definitely that! I was thinking one could write fanfiction where they're having another misadventure in the house, since most of the episode is a dream and at the end they find the house in reality. (I think the dream was probably a warning.)
I stumbled across knowledge of the episode because of William Talman (Mr. Burger on Perry Mason) being in it as the sheriff. But when I read the summary, I knew it was one I'd want to see in any case. I want to use the crying house idea for a fic sometime (maybe a Kolchak one).

Date: 2011-07-24 05:13 pm (UTC)I'll have to check out that Limbo episode before I'd try writing anything for the Man-Eating House episode! Yeah, I'd like for there to be a different outcome so the sheriff could get out alive, haha.

Date: 2011-07-29 08:26 am (UTC)I saw the episode! Oh, hello there, Ricardo Montalban. He certainly is talented; he plays very nasty villains and very wonderful people too. The episode was quite brain-breaking, but a lot of fun. And Jim's expression when Artie died ... wow, that was heart-breaking.

Date: 2011-07-29 08:56 am (UTC)Yes, he's one of Mom's favorites! I enjoy him too.
Oh poor both of them! I'll definitely check that one out.
(Say, how many times does Artie "die"? LOL.)

Date: 2011-07-29 12:45 pm (UTC)Wow. LOL. It sounds like the writers enjoyed beating up on Arte. With those summaries I think I'm most intrigued by Pistoleros and Big Blast. And the amnesia episode.
That is odd, about Arte being laid up longer. **snerk.** And poor Jeremy.

Date: 2011-07-30 12:42 am (UTC)Ahh yes.
Huh. That would have been neat, in order to see everyone, but I wonder if it would have felt like someone was a third wheel. I've only seen a few episodes and I'm so used to there being Jim and Arte that I'm not sure what I'd think of there being three.

Date: 2011-07-30 06:47 am (UTC)Ahh, that Charles Aidman. I'll have to check some of those episodes out, then; I'm curious after hearing you praise him up so much! Do you have a recommendation for a good Jeremy episode? And I can't remember: did the series finish out with him and Jim or was Arte able to return before the end?

Date: 2011-07-30 04:03 pm (UTC)Character actors are awesome. I'll add that episode to my list of ones to look at!
Ahh, I see. That was probably a good decision, to scatter them throughout.
It's neat when reunion movies click like that!
Oh, a couple weeks ago I saw this Gunsmoke episode called Legends Don't Sleep. It was really interesting. On the one side, there was Matt Dillon's view of things, that this criminal had not fully paid for all the wrongs he had done and that he was a completely bad person. On the other side, the viewers saw a kinder side to the criminal when he was trying to look after his aunt and protect this idolizing kid following him around. He seemed to genuinely want to turn his life around, but no one would let him. The full truth probably lies somewhere in between Matt's view and the aunt's and kid's views. He definitely wasn't completely bad, that's for sure. I have to wonder what Matt would have thought if he had realized that the two former gang members Race Fallon killed near the end were trying to kill that kid and Race was trying to protect him.

Date: 2011-07-30 04:47 pm (UTC)There was not. Poor Race Fallon.
Matt was pretty compassionate in the B&W episode The Hostage (not to be confused with the color episode Hostage!). That episode Vengeance sounds really heart-breaking! So Matt believed the poor kid was guilty of all the crimes?

Date: 2011-07-30 05:10 pm (UTC)Wow, that would be a jolt. It sounds like a really intense episode! And the thing about the hired killers certainly makes me raise an eyebrow.
Gosh, that's the same thing Race Fallon did---drawing against Matt and threatening to kill him because he wanted Matt to kill him. And when he was laying dying, he told Matt that in some strange way, Matt was probably the closest thing to a friend he had ever had.
Vengeance sounds absolutely heart-shattering! And already being attached to the actor would certainly make it worse, yes.

Date: 2011-07-30 05:36 pm (UTC)Yeah, that makes sense that they were trying to keep the radio character.
It really was! Even moreso since Matt seemed to be viewing everything in such stark black and white. I wonder if his feelings on Race Fallon would have changed any by the time of the color episodes.

Date: 2011-07-30 01:41 pm (UTC)My favorite WSS characters are probably Bernardo and Anita but I do like the other characters you mentioned too.
I find it hard to show much sympathy for the Jets due to the way they treated Anita, I know Baby John was more a pawn in the situation and as far as I recall Ice wasn't there but the way the others behaved makes it hard for me to care about them. I certainly think the Jets are given more attention in the film as opposed to the Sharks but I've always felt Bernardo was a more well rounded character, he has flaws obviously but at least you get this glimpse of him as a concerned (if not overly protective) brother and a loving boyfriend plus you kinda feel like he's burdened with trying to protect his whole family.
I guess I tend to like characters who I feel have hidden depths, like the way you are able to realistically flesh out Schrank's character for example. With a character like Tony for example, I know the movie is telling me to root for him but I find him incredibly naive and a bit dull tbh.

Date: 2011-07-30 03:39 pm (UTC)Yeah, what they did to Anita was just horrible! I can't imagine Baby John liked it, and I've always wondered how Anybodys felt. And Ice wasn't there? That's interesting; I was also wondering about that. I'll have to watch the scene to see whether he's there.
You summarize Bernardo very well! I agree with all of that. I just loved seeing him interact with Maria. I wish there had been more such scenes. And the Sharks just seemed ... I don't know, classier than the Jets. And I love class.
Characters with hidden depths certainly appeal to me too. I just love trying to pick apart their minds.
Tony was quite naive. I don't know if I'd call him dull, but ... he really isn't a favorite of mine.
