So I finally admitted in the U.N.C.L.E. comm that I don’t see Napoleon as a chronic bed-hopper even though he certainly loves a pretty face and is a serial dater. What I didn’t say was that if I really thought he was a bed-hopper like James Bond, I doubt I would be attracted to him or find him appealing at all. Part of the reason why Napoleon appeals to me is because I’ve always had the impression that he’s a more moral person than James Bond. I don’t like James Bond because he’s a chronic bed-hopper. I do like Roger Moore, and yet when it comes to Bond, there’s just an automatic turn-off. No attraction.

(Years ago, when I was experimenting with walking more on the wild side, probably because I liked how impressed someone seemed to be when I did it, I had a character who was kind of a bed-hopper and that continued even after he became seriously involved with one particular person. That was gross. We never wrote out any bedroom scenes or anything like that, but it was always known what he was doing. I couldn't do that now, especially the continuing with playing the field even after starting a serious relationship. I would be totally uncomfortable, especially if the character was very important to the story as he was in those role-plays. I would also be uncomfortable with the character having a big role since he was a big-time crime boss and very unrepentant. If I ever get my novel off the ground, he will either have a very reduced role, not be a bed-hopper, or possibly both.)

Speaking of Roger Moore, though, it’s interesting how I can be totally obsessed with him for a while and then it fades and while I still like the characters, there doesn’t seem to be much, if any, crushing. That’s happened more than once. I wonder if that means he’s more on the fringes of my darlings instead of smack-dab with them. With all the rest, there is constant crushing on the characters when I see them even if there isn’t a constant, serious obsession with them/the actors.

I think a lot of why it faded this time was because of Simon Templar, actually. I like the character, but I am one of the few who prefers the color episodes to the B&Ws. There were a lot of B&W episodes I hadn’t seen before and then they finally released the DVD sets of those seasons and I snapped them up. In the B&W episodes, Simon seems rather sexist sometimes. And I know that was likely largely a product of the times and has to be looked at in that way, but Simon by his very nature is an anachronistic person. I think that even in the present-day, Simon would probably have some sexist ideas and feel that women are silly worrying things that need to keep out of the men’s worlds and stick to their own place. The book Simon is a lot more that way, I think, but the TV version has some of it too. I hadn’t seen some of the worst offending episodes of that sort before and when I did, they were kind of a turn-off. The most sickening episode of all was the more humorous Luella. Everyone was unlikable there, from Simon to his friend to his friend's wife. I think those views aren't expressed as much in the color episodes. Or maybe possibly Simon matured beyond such views. I should have been watching the color episodes on MeTV once they came around to them again. I keep longing for a new DVD release of all the color episodes, but I’m not sure they’re going to release separately from the boxset. I'd better watch my scant few color episodes again; maybe that will cool things a bit and I'll like Simon more again.

I still love Beau Maverick and was thrilled to see a couple of his episodes I’ve never seen before when Cozi showed them. The Town That Wasn’t There was sooo good and establishes why Beau is my favorite Maverick. It starts out seeming that he’s being a selfish prick, but throughout the episode he grows to honestly be fond of the people he’s with and sincerely wants to help them. He even turns down $10,000 when accepting it would have hurt one of those people. He then comments to himself something like that his uncle would send him back to England if he knew.

(Honestly, I really don’t like Beau’s uncle. He treats Beau like crap and most of the sayings he gives sound really selfish. And yet when he actually appeared on-screen, he acted more like Bret and the others in that he seemed to try to help people, so I ended up torn on what to think of him. Although it also seemed like he mostly helped because he liked giving the finger to the bad guys rather than because he wanted to help the people who were being hurt. When I write about him in stories I try to be kind, since even when I don't like certain characters I try to examine them from all angles within the contexts of the stories unless they're meant to be out-and-out villains and don't need to be examined more closely. Part of me seriously wants him to just flat-out not care about Beau since he treats him so rotten, but I always try to instead stress that he's just worried about Beau doing something that will get him hurt or killed. Although the $10,000 thing makes me question that idea.)

I think Lord Sinclair may be my favorite Roger character. Part of me would like to say that my Roger Bond figure is Lord Sinclair, as I think he’s the one I want the figure to be the most, but I feel I can’t since I don’t have a Tony Curtis figure to be Danny. Sacrilege! If I had a Tony Curtis figure that’s around 6 inches, my Roger figure would totally be Lord Sinclair. I don’t suppose there is such a thing as a Tony Curtis figure? Sigh.

And so after a month we come full-circle. I went to F.Y.E. at the end of January looking for some type of James Bond figure in Roger's image. That wasn't the only reason I was there, and I would have likely gone anyway even if it hadn't been a reason at all, but I was still very upset when I got sick after that excursion and got everybody else in the house sick. I can't prove it came from there, but it must have been either there or Wal-Mart, since I got sick before anybody else and therefore most likely did not pick it up at my aunt's. It had to be a place where I was the only one going around and coming into contact with people. But it was highly aggravating and upsetting that it happened, especially when the shopping was fruitless.

I was upset for weeks feeling like I should have gone to Build-a-Bear instead and got the other doll I wanted. Then I probably wouldn't have got sick/got everybody sick. And I was frustrated that I didn't get to go last week because of the lingering cough problems. Now, however, I'm grateful I didn't make it. Hopefully I'll get another chance for the doll, but meanwhile ...

I finally found a figure online for a decent price. Not one of the 12-inch figures, sadly, but about half that size. I spent days debating whether to get it and trying to see if it really looked enough like Roger to make a purchase worth it. There were four people watching it besides me; it was a Buy It Now listing. I felt a little bad to suddenly pull it out from underneath them, but any of them could have bought it at any time if they had felt so inclined, and apparently they didn't by the time I made up my mind, so no regrets. These figures usually seem to go for much more than I got mine for, so I'm doubly thrilled.

I did immediately feel guilty to purchase something James Bond, since neither Dad nor Mom like that franchise (and I'd be all over it if it wasn't for the bed times; I loved Moonraker except for what amounted to two minutes or less of bed times/implications of bed times ... and I still kind of want to see more films, too ...), but of course it was more for the actor than the character, and my idea was that it could be whatever character I wanted it to be at any given time. I stayed in that more excited mindset and didn't feel any more guilt.

Ohmygoshsquee, it shipped Monday and came this past day! And, as I determined before taking the plunge and purchasing, it does look sufficiently like Roger to be worth it! And it's so nice with fabric clothing.... I adore fabric clothing! It shows real thought and attention went into the crafting, instead of just putting molded clothes on. (Not that some molded clothing can't be amazingly detailed too, of course. But it upsets me that fabric clothing is not really a thing like it used to be.) The card is also very nice, with many pictures of Roger all over it. I have it sitting next to the card from my Oscar Goldman figure so I can see the pictures. The figures themselves are on my desk.

So I have what I set out to find a month ago and I am very pleased.

I've also been reading that Saint book I got with my last Amazon order. I've got to say, I like this one way more than that short story collection I tried a couple of years ago. Even though that was written after this novel, I like Simon's characterization in the novel far more. It's one of the books written around the WWII era, The Saint Sees It Through, and Simon is serious like his television counterpart. I haven't seen one aggravating, dirty-minded crack in here like there was in the short story collection. I also haven't seen any instances of Simon taking the law into his hands more than I find comfortable (no burying bodies in gardens to keep the people involved from going to jail, oy vey). I may want to try some other books from this time period. And if I like them too, I will be highly amused, as of course the WWII era books are largely hated among the book purists. They usually prefer their Saint much more playful and mischievous and naughty, as he is in the earlier books. I prefer him more like the character in the TV show. Which of course immediately makes me a bizarre wild card in the fandom, as I am almost everywhere. Can't break with tradition, after all.

I'm also writing a sci-fi Maverick fic, as of course the fic where Snakes reveals himself to be alive has to include some sci-fi elements. And with encouragement, I'm continuing it to show Snakes taking Beau through the portal to visit the present-day. It's mostly a character study, though, as both Snakes and Beau have issues to work through at this point. It probably won't be more than a two-shot, but who knows.

I am vaguely considering that maybe Beau could be visiting in the Count Manzeppi fic I wanted to write, and that might give me a little more motivation to go ahead with it, but I'm not sure. I was just burned so seriously with The Deadly Codename that I'm honestly afraid to start a new WWW fic. I don't want to be involved in any more drama in that fandom. Beau around would just be one more thing for that person to complain about, should he decide to complain again. I might actually have more luck writing that fic for the Maverick fandom instead. **headdesk.**

In any case, there is the problem that by playing so much in Snakes' past, it kind of turned a few things in my original timeline for him on their heads, as I knew would happen if I kept playing. But I really liked the things I was coming up with and didn't want to let them go. Now I do have to wonder how to re-align things again, since Snakes wasn't supposed to have any friends before going to the present-day and now with the Maverick branch of the timeline he has Beau. I'm trying to rationalize it by him saying that Pinto broke him so much over three years of torture that he wasn't sure Beau really would still care and want to be his friend, since they didn't even really know each other that well. But I'm not sure that's a good enough fix.

There's also the issue that in Airship it's a plot point that Snakes hasn't been back to the past before and goes back only to find Jim and Arte. After I brought in the idea of Snakes and Beau, I knew Snakes wouldn't want to leave Beau hanging, so in the Maverick timeline, the first time he goes back is to find Beau and let him know he's okay. I don't know whether to leave things as they are, apparently two similar but different timelines, to try to reconnect them by explanations from Snakes, or to reconnect them by tweaking some things in the older stories.

Another idea I had was that maybe the time re-set Duke caused in the YGO branch of the timeline screwed a few things up that he hadn't intended on, including Snakes and Beau, and that perhaps when it's said that Snakes didn't have anyone, that's because he doesn't remember Beau with the time re-set. That gets fixed at the end of the story, so if there was any trouble, Snakes remembers the truth now. But that gets sticky too, as it would mean that the original WWW time-travel fics were written with the time re-set in mind and they're Snakes' incorrect memories of how things happened.

Confusion, thy name is time-travel. Confusion, thy name is also retcon.

I've gotta say, I have to sympathize with George Lucas in a situation like this. When you start playing in the past, you find new ways of telling things that you like better than the original way. And then naturally you want to tweak the originals to fit the new ideas. But that's an unpopular thing to do. And I still don't agree with him booting out the original actors for Boba Fett and Anakin Skywalker in the original trilogy DVDs. But still, I can understand why it happened.

What am I gonna do?

Aheh....

The last time I was asleep, I spent most of it dreaming about Roger Moore's James Bond. Which ... sounds highly embarrassing out of context, since it sounds like I'm swooning over the character.

The truth is just that I've had the character on the brain for the last couple of days. We had a family thing up at the gorgeous place of one of my paternal aunt's and then I got to go to the big F.Y.E. afterwards. They were clearancing certain stuff and I'm afraid I spent over an hour going through everything.

But first things first. My aunt's house. Gah, I loved it! Cute entryway room, giant living room and dining room, a kitchen with counter space, a hallway with a bathroom for each bedroom and an awesome alcove in the hall for DVDs and collector's dolls to be displayed.... My aunt apparently collects them; they're also all over her room, along with other fascinating old things like old vinyl records. (I know vinyl is popular again, but I'm pretty sure the records I saw were from when it was popular before.) I was in love with the house and the way she styled it. I felt a little like I was in an antique shop. I didn't go in the basement, but I imagine it was pretty amazing too.

Then the big F.Y.E. It's always so nice to go there. I'm there maybe once or twice a year, if I'm lucky; usually I can only go to the small F.Y.E. in a mall closer to home. There's always so many fascinating pop culture collectibles. I'll admit my main purpose in going was on the off-chance that maybe I could find a figure based on Roger Moore's James Bond or some other such memorabilia. No luck there, but I did see all of the movies, naturally. I got scared away from the first one due to the pictures on the case and wasn't sure what to make of any of the others. I decided to take [livejournal.com profile] 1bigbeatlesfan up on her offer of the Moonraker DVD. Reading the summaries again, as I previously did some time ago, it sounded like it might be the one I'd be the most comfortable with and a good one to start with. Then my brother has the last three of Roger's James Bond movies among the video collection he let us have, but the problem with that is that our only working VCR is in the living room, where there's a high chance of being interrupted while watching....

I also wanted to see if I could find either The King's Thief or Gold of the Seven Saints. No luck there, although I was told they actually do carry the latter and were just out. It'd probably be pretty expensive there anyway, though. And then I sort of hoped maybe a few Ivanhoe episodes had been released to DVD. No apparent luck there, either. I wish Columbia would release that. And Circus Boy, if they've never put that on DVD. I'm still missing a few episodes from Antenna TV's run, and I'm not sure which ones.

Regarding Gold of the Seven Saints, it has one of those rather irritating plots where they're trying to keep the gold but of course lose it in the end. But on the upside, there's tons of friendship squee and hurt/comfort, according to the summary. Roger's character is hurt and some of the plot is taken up with getting him to a doctor. Then later, the bad guys kidnap and torture him and his friend has to save him. Gah! And it sounds like they're always loyal to each other and don't betray each other for the gold, which is a breath of fresh air in movies like that.

(Then I heard Roger sing again, on The Persuaders!, and it was pretty awesome. Squeeee.)

I was also thinking about an amusing James Bond-related moment, although I think this was based on Daniel Craig's Bond rather than Roger's. There's this silly, nutty sketch comedy show called Studio C. Mom doesn't like it and I haven't seen enough to judge, but one time the TV was on to the channel and we came home from getting groceries and I was taking care of them while watching the show and there was this hilarious James Bond parody where he comes to get the new gadgets for his case. I don't even remember now what most of them were, except I remember the girl tried to give him this bizarre gun that would only fire if he wasn't stressed. And he was in disbelief and exclaiming, "My life is filled with stress! People are shooting at me every day!" ROTFLOL. I wonder if I could find that on YouTube....

EDIT: Found it! ROTFLOL.

And switching gears to talk about a character played by my other favorite British-born actor.... I finally got unstuck on the Maverick story where Bret tells of how he and Snakes met. I finished that, wrote the one where he meets Snakes in a saloon, and then started my fic idea of Beau meeting Jack Vandergelt. Snakes features into that one too. It will be another multi-chapter and I look forward to seeing how it will come out. I'm thrilled to have finally been able to pick up my Maverick stories again! I also want to write the one where the Mavericks react to Snakes' death, gah. That is going to be a bittersweet and sad one. And then I naturally won't be able to refrain from writing the story where Snakes comes back through the portal after his revival to find Beau and tell him he's okay. I'm just wondering how to handle that one without getting into the sci-fi elements of being brought back from the dead by a mad scientist, since I'm not sure the Maverick fans would react too well to that strangeness. Maybe Snakes can just say he's alive and let Beau see that he's alive and not get into the details. We'll have to see.

So I got a plunnie involving Beau Maverick and the episode The Rivals. It would involve Beau getting mistaken for Bret's friend Jack Vandergelt III during some chaotic episode where bad guys are after Jack for some reason (maybe wanting his or his father's business assets or something). Bret would likely turn up somewhere along the way. I don't know if I'd bring Bart in too; that could get pretty crowded. Although it would be amusing to have Bart react to Beau and Jack. And Bart and Beau's relationship is the most interesting for me to write, since Beau never interacted with Bret.

I'm debating whether Jack might be up to his old tricks a bit and want him and Beau to deliberately switch places and try to figure out what's going on. Jack (or Van, as he is usually called) is a little bit of a jerk in the episode, but by the end he's pretty adorable. (And there's some very nice hurt/comfort. Purrrr. Although Jack exaggerates the seriousness of his injury, heh.) He might want to try it, but on the other hand, he wouldn't want to deliberately endanger Beau's life.

I'll ponder on exactly how to work it out. Meanwhile, I wanted an extreme hurt/comfort fic with my Persuaders! fic and got it. And the Star Wars fic is almost done, I hope. I got a little distracted by the Persuaders! fic. Hopefully I can easily touch up the Star Wars fic and post it soon.

Ummm....

So a couple of weeks ago, when I started writing the new Maverick fic, I was having a resurgence of Roger Moore crushing (which, oddly enough, resurfaced because I was reading my WWW RP partner's Maverick fic with Bart. Bart made me think about Beau, and cue squeesville). That remained, but faded a bit in favor of Chrissy crushing, since I always adore him more of the two and Snakes ended up so prominent in the fic and now I'm planning other Maverick fics involving him and Beau.

I was reading a very interesting and mostly factual article on Maverick an hour or so ago. Included was a picture of Roger Moore as Beau, staring at something in adorable wide-eyed wonder (and wearing what looks like a top hat, yesss). Cue another squee as I recall anew why I love Beau.

And now I want to do a Maverick h/c fic with Beau as the victim this time. It might be another fic with Snakes, or it might have Bart again. (Or both.) Or it might just be a blurb. Whatever, it's probably going to happen.

So today I finally got to see Simon's other CHiPs episode! He was adorable! **cuddles him.** However, I do take issue with the episode. As mostly quoted from emails earlier tonight:

He ran a car alarm company and was bewildered because the cars he set up with alarms kept apparently being stolen and then reappearing in random places around the city. His college age daughter wanted to help him in the business and he didn't want her fiddling around under car hoods. In the end, it turns out that she was the one disabling the alarms and driving the cars off so they'd seem to be stolen, all to try to get his attention! Ugh! What's really disgusting about it is that his reputation was being ruined over it, and she didn't care and kept on selfishly doing what she was doing until she tried it on Ponch's car and he caught her. Simon was much too forgiving and adorable under the circumstances. It looked like she was going to get what she wanted. After ruining her father's reputation, she should have to pay in a legitimate way before it would even be a consideration! She didn't even say she was sorry!

Hopefully some action would be taken, even though it wasn't shown onscreen. Even if Ponch didn't press charges over his car, some of the other people might have. She even did it to the mayor's car! I can't believe her utter immaturity. Simon was adorable, but that was one time I really would have liked to see him go into full-blown yelling, chewing-out mode. I would have rooted for him all the way. His daughter really didn't deserve to get what she wanted after being so nasty.

Simon's character didn't want her dealing with the cars, but he wasn't really harsh about it like some of his characters might have been. Yet Ponch acted like he was being so awful, and when he revealed the girl's crummy actions, it seemed like he and Jon behaved as though they were on the girl's side. Not that they agreed with what she did, but they felt the father really needed to listen to her side. Which he did, true, but they should have warned her that what she did was really wrong and even criminal. Usually characters never get off scot-free on the show, so I'll keep figuring justice was done, but I'll always wish there had been some onscreen mention of it.

Honestly, I don't think this show writes female characters very well most of the time. I don't care much for Bonnie; she can really be a she-dog when she wants to be. (Although maybe that just started happening later on; I thought she was nicer in earlier seasons.) I did like Robbie the truck driver, though. And I usually like Sindy, although I was disappointed with her when she wanted to be "one of the guys" so much that she even joined in teasing a sensitive character (Grossman) way too long until he really felt hurt over it and then she shrugged it off when he felt bad, as though that was it and there was nothing she could do about it. Ponch really felt awful when he realized they'd taken the teasing too far, and he wanted to do something to try to help Grossman feel better, but that angle didn't really get developed. (Grossman did, however, get to be heroic in the climax and then kids were coming up to him wanting his autograph. Aww.)

I was a little surprised when someone recently proclaimed they hated CHiPs, and I've been pondering what could be the reason for that, especially since they like the somewhat similar Jack Webb shows of the 1970s. My guesses would be: 1, CHiPs is funnier than the Jack Webb shows. 2, CHiPs kind of sensationalizes huge car accidents and shows really horrifying things, like cars tearing through trucks as they fly through the air. (This wasn't done so much earlier, but became a staple later.) 3, They don't seem to be able to write very likable female characters much of the time.

I think CHiPs was better in the earlier seasons, like 1-3. I haven't always liked some of the goings-on in the later episodes. And season 6 sounds preposterous on so many levels. We not only lost three key cast members, but they started doing dumb plots like people believing that there were aliens or other monsters afoot, and it really looking like there were, before everything was resolved. CHiPs is a more realistic show aside from the sensationalized car crashes, so I don't think I'd care for season 6 very much.

And I'm wondering what to do with my Maverick fic. I'm to the point now where I think the main conflicts have been worked out as much as I'm going to let them be at this point, so I was going to write the epilogue and have Bart recovered enough that they're leaving, but there's also the fact that Bart being injured set up the whole plot. He's still injured and I suppose I could extend the story with a chapter of two of him trying to recover and focusing more on that. Maybe it wouldn't even look like the story was properly paced if I didn't.

One problem is, I don't really like detailing recoveries in every particular. My WWW RP partner lives for that part of the hurt/comfort, but I get bored by it if it goes on very long. (I prefer the angst of the hurt and the squee of the initial beginning to recover.) Detailing every instance of trying to stand again after being in bed for so long, or every changing of the dressing, etc.... I can think of at least two multi-chapter fics that remain unfinished because I couldn't figure out how to keep detailing everything like that and not be retreading old ground. I wonder if I should do one scene of each, though.

The other thing is, however, the hurt/comfort was kind of a secondary plot point. The main thing seems to have ended up being meeting Snakes and how the Mavericks deal with this, including the feelings Beau has of not really belonging in the family. It was also supposed to explore Bart and Beau's relationship and I've done a lot of that through their conversations and Beau being protective and Bart worrying about Beau. I'm just not sure if suddenly focusing more on the hurt/comfort would make sense.

I always read through the whole story before I post an epilogue, but with these confused feelings, I don't even know whether to finish my epilogue yet. Maybe I could have some brief hurt/comforty flashbacks in the epilogue to Bart's recovery scenes. I could probably do that without breaking the flow of narration and it might be better than devoting a whole chapter to it. On the other hand, maybe it wouldn't.

I guess the only thing I can do is read through everything as it stands right now and then decide what direction to take.
ladybug_archive: (snakes)
An interesting thing I've observed about hurt/comfort for a long time: while it's fun to put your favorite in the position of victim and have others react to it, if you're planning to revolve a story around hurt/comfort, the victim likely won't be able to be a very active participant for most of the story. It's the comforter who really gets to be awesome, and who really gets the lion's share of the focus, especially if the victim is in and out of consciousness (or just plain out). So if your story involves a character you like and one you don't like as much, you may want to think twice about who ends up the victim and who is the comforter. (If you like both characters, you may want to trade off doing stories both ways.)

After I finished that last LJ entry, I got a plunnie. I craved more Bart and Beau hurt/comfort. I briefly entertained the thought of Beau as the victim again, but then I decided that I should turn the tables and explore things from the other side this time. So now I've got a very badly injured Bart and a very protective Beau.

When I did the first Maverick story in the summer, I don't think my original outline called for Beau to show up as a ghost after dying. But I quickly realized he wasn't going to get much chance to be actively in the story if I didn't do something like that, so I adjusted the outline and Beau's participation from the other side of the veil became one of the key elements.

For this story, Beau will most likely be conscious through the whole thing, unless I decide to have him get knocked out at some point. Bart will drift in and out of consciousness and I'll focus the story largely on writing for Beau (who comes a lot easier for me, maybe partially because of his more formal speech pattern).

Then again, it all depends on the character. I think I write for Snakes pretty well too, despite his more drawling speech pattern. Snakes still sounds a little more educated than Pinto, who generally deviates to a more rustic vernacular. Snakes is a high-class riverboat gambler and suspected crime boss. And Beau has just run into him.

I know my original headcanon called for Snakes to have only met Bret Maverick, but I decided I had to retcon that. Luckily, it's only been mentioned in my RPs, and in a Tumblr-only ficlet. When I decided I wanted to do another Bart and Beau exploration fic, I also decided I wanted Beau to interact with Snakes. I briefly worried that would mess with my timeline for Snakes, but then I realized it would fit right in. Beau was exiled to England presumably right after the war and spent five years there, so he was back in 1870 and my timeline calls for Snakes to die in 1871. (And then be restored to life in 1874.)

I originally considered this story being either a short oneshot or a long oneshot, but as I wrote, I decided it would work best as a multi-chapter. I'm not entirely sure yet how it will develop, but as with all Snakes stories, even the ones in the 19th century, he will display a more human side. At the moment he's taken pity on Bart and Beau and has agreed to help them. He tested Beau to see if Beau would agree to pay him and surrender to Beau's enemies if Snakes agreed to look after Bart (contrary to most of the people Snakes deals with, who would sell anyone out). When Beau conceded, fearing it was the only way Bart would get help in their situation, Snakes was stunned and decided to help them. But he'll probably want to talk to Beau when they get to safety and he'll be his generally cynical self.

I'm debating whether the story should end up unfolding with Beau and Snakes locked in a competition and Beau eventually outwitting Snakes and getting the Maverick money back, and breaking Snakes' control over the town, or if it should be a quieter fic with conversation, trying to help Bart, and an attack by the enemies, followed by Snakes and Beau deciding on a mutual departure and Snakes keeping the town for the time being. The first way would be more in keeping with the Maverick series, but the second way might fit the fic better. I'll have to see. Maybe I'll even combine the ways.

One thing I will say: I'm pretty useless on poker playing, and on coming up with complex, Maverick-level schemes. That old story I was writing about Tony Ferano from The Monkees fizzled because I needed to have a lot about poker playing and my eyes crossed every time I tried to read the rules or figure out poker tricks. So on the surface it would seem like I would not be a good choice for a Maverick writer. I can't even write that story with Snakes encountering Frank Harper because it would involve poker a lot. And I stalled on my Bret meets Snakes fic because of a poker game.

But then again, I only rarely stick to any series' formula when I write for it. The stuff I write for YGO barely ever features duels. Perry Mason doesn't revolve around innocent people arrested. Still, I keep formulaic elements intact: YGO has supernatural stuff going on, Perry Mason has more realistic crimes to solve (usually). And of course, both series and anything else I write for will be very character-driven.

So hopefully I can figure something out for this current fic that will be true to the show and the characters as well as to what I feel able to write.

I've mused sometimes on the Maverick family. I'm amused that I'm not a big fan of Bart, while my WWW RP partner is not a big fan of Bret. We both like Beau.

I'm not sure what she doesn't like about Bret. I think the reasons I don't always like Bart, though, are #1, Because he often seems more bland in personality than the other two, and #2, Because when one brother is being obnoxious to the other, it usually seems like it's Bart being obnoxious to Bret.

The popular episode Two Beggars on Horseback, which I remember talking about before, has both brothers trying to get to where one of them can get his check cashed. There's only enough money for one, so they're trying to outsmart each other to get there first. But unless something was cut from the version I saw (which is possible; I haven't watched the uncut yet), the worst thing Bret did was to try to sneak out of the hotel ahead of Bart. Meanwhile, Bart pulled pranks to further slow Bret down. I'm not a fan of practical jokes, so that would naturally annoy me. And it kind of irritated me that when he's talking to Patricia Barry's character (at least, I think it was her), he paints a picture of Bret as being the prankster. If Bret did anything in that episode, it was only after Bart provoked him. But as mentioned, I don't recall him doing anything.

(I also remember another episode where Bart tried to get one up on Bret, and succeeded, and was very obnoxious about it. Although maybe someone else wouldn't think he was obnoxious. And maybe that scene is actually one reason why my RP partner likes Bart so much, since he disguised himself and she likes Artemus Gordon and his disguises.)

Bart eventually gets himself into life-threatening trouble and Bret immediately abandons the nonsense of their competition to come help him. He also expresses the opinion that Bart is being silly and they should compromise, which they do when Bret frees him. They decide they'll share one check. (In the end, they both get all their money by tricking a crooked businessman who left Bart to die.)

Of course, I'm sure that if Bret had been the one to get into trouble, Bart would have abandoned the competition too. Bart has had some very good episodes; I'm particularly fond of his first one, where he does indeed have to save Bret, and The Goose-Drownder from season 3, which is basically a huge H.M. Wynant hurt/comfort fest. But I still like the other two guys better.

I was actually surprised to learn that my WWW RP partner likes Beau, though. The main thing that puzzles me about Beau is that it isn't always easy to tell that he and Bart care about each other, while it's always very clear with Bret and Bart. James Garner and Jack Kelly just had amazing chemistry together. Jack Kelly and Roger Moore ... not so much. I think Roger Moore had better chemistry with James Garner, albeit he didn't play Beau in the one episode where they're onscreen together.

In the first Beau episode, he's abducted by a madman and tries to get a message across to Bart for help. Bart comes, of course, but when he receives the initial communications, he really doesn't react like he's upset or worried. If it had been Bret in trouble, he would have reacted. (This could, however, be the product of bad writing, since the writing honestly wasn't as good by the fourth season and that was the main reason why Roger didn't stick around for long.)

Then in another episode, Bart is playing some tricks on current enemies and needs a thousand dollars from Beau. Later, Bart gets in trouble and Beau shows up to help him. When the crooks are caught, Bart exclaims, "You knew I was in trouble and you came for me, didn't you?" Beau says No; he came to get his thousand dollars back. However, it's not as cut-and-dry as that, because Beau really didn't know Bart was in trouble. As far as he knew, Bart was still pulling pranks and hadn't become a victim of the bad guys himself. Beau was probably rather exasperated when he arrived and found that Bart had gotten in over his head.

I do think they care about each other; Bart acts like he's happy to see Beau when he greets him coming back from England in the first episode. And they travel together sometimes and seem to manage alright with that (until a conflict of interest comes along). There's the general shenanigans of trying to beat each other to money or girls or both, but there's that with Bret and Bart, too. It just comes of how the whole family was raised.

But that doesn't change the fact that I just don't feel any chemistry between Bart and Beau. Beau does better solo. Ah, how I wish there had been even one episode with him and Bret together.

I wrote a Maverick story during the summer where Beau is shot trying to protect Bart and Bart can't deal with it. I definitely think he would be distraught if that happened, but on the other hand, it's kind of sad if Beau has to get himself shot for there to be a better indication of caring between them.

So I learned today that James Garner died last night. I know he was getting on, but it was still a sad shock. I feel so bad for his family. I've actually had some minimal contact with his daughter; she's on Tumblr and she Follows me. It really comes out in her posts how much she loves her father. This must be such an awful blow for her, and for her mother. He was married to the same woman all through the years, since 1956.

I have the urge to watch a lot of Maverick and The Rockford Files this week. And my sister gave us a bunch of movies she'd recorded off TV a long time ago; among them is the James Garner movie Move Over, Darling. I was just looking through those tapes yesterday, hoping for some of Richard Anderson's early movies, and that was the only tape that I was really interested in, so I left it on top of the stack.

James Garner isn't actually one of my "darlings", but I do like him. He definitely had a skill for comedy. And my favorite thing about him is how devoted he was as a family man.

I've been making Tumblr posts with him today and plan to take some pictures from other episodes to post later in the week. I'm also thinking I should really try to pick up my Rockford Files fic again, the one with Dutch Ingram.

And I can't help that his death is making me worry more about those of my "darlings" who are still alive. They're all around the same age as he, give or take a year or two. I dread so much the day when I'll come on and see or someone will tell me that one of them has died.

Fic plans!

My Mannix chapter finally decided to be done. After I decided to combine another idea, I realized how to make the chapter feel more full and I got it up. And with the inspiration of the second idea, the second chapter got written and posted now too.

I hope I can carry this fic through to completion. I also want to finish the Dutch Ingram fic, but it's being a little more of a puzzle. And my song challenge is moving swimmingly; I have forty prompts left out of a hundred! That's the farthest I've ever got on a 100-prompt challenge. I'm writing at my own pace, with some fics long and some short, and it's just lovely.

Then I got an idea for a Maverick fic. Beau Maverick puzzles me a bit, as does his relationship with cousin Bart. While it's always perfectly easy to tell that Bret and Bart care about each other, in spite of their barbs and occasional tricks, somehow I find it more difficult to tell about Bart and Beau (even though I'm sure they care too).

So I got an idea rife with family hurt/comfort. Beau tackles Bart out of the path of a bullet and is hit instead. Bart is horrified and upset, especially when it turns out to be a very bad hit and Beau isn't really expected to survive. He sends for Bret and is determined to find the shooter. And while they alternately search for the guy and check on Beau, Beau has astral-projected and is wandering about, observing the other two while unable to make contact.

I'm not sure when I'll start on that one, or if I can carry it through to completion. I found Bret's voice and have an unfinished fic with him, but I haven't ever tried writing for the other two. Yes, I'm aware that Bret and Bart had pretty much the same speech pattern in scripts and James Garner could pick which brother he wanted to be, but they still seem different to me, I imagine because of the actors' great talents.

Another question is what to do about the fourth relation, Brent. Brought in after Roger Moore quit, Robert Colbert only played Brent for two episodes. Both the name and his get-up were definite, deliberate callbacks to James Garner, whose departure really killed the series. Even though I like Roger Moore, I agree that most of his scripts were way below James Garner's in quality and uniqueness, and I don't blame him for quitting.

So ... since Warner Brothers was just grasping at straws and Brent was really supposed to be identical to Bret (something Robert Colbert was aware of and worried about), I wonder whether to just ignore the character's existence. I haven't seen either of his episodes and am not even sure whether he is a brother or a cousin. I've heard both. If he's a brother, it's a total ret-con, because they were very clear earlier that there were only two brothers. And even though Beau is mentioned in the later attempts at reviving the series in the 1970s, Brent is not. It seems Warner Brothers realized how stupid the move was and they wanted to forget, too.

On the other hand, I hate to ignore any legitimate character's existence. So it is a dilemma.

Round 2 started today. I went back to make my next picks. Some shows I was surprised to see in the next round, some I wasn't. And there were some more tough decisions.

Columbo or Hawaii 5-O? Man. Columbo is the best show of the two, I think, but I've seen a lot more of Hawaii 5-O and enjoy it a lot, usually. Still, in the end it's similar to a lot of crime shows and Columbo was really different by being a "howcatch'em" instead of a "whodunit". You always knew who did it; you just didn't know how Columbo would prove it. Plus, Columbo is awesome. (So is Steve McGarett, though.) I ended up picking Columbo. I wonder a bit if I should have chosen the other, but the predominant feeling is satisfaction that I made a good choice.

I wasn't surprised people cut Cannon out of the running. Sigh. Of course more of them would vote for The Rockford Files. They seem to really enjoy that show's quirkiness. I feel better about it than I did, but in its case, I don't care for how it broke the mold. I'd rather see a dead serious P.I. show like Cannon instead of The Rockford Files' general off-beatedness.

Ironside made it to Round 2. So did The Untouchables. Adam-12 was booted in favor of Dragnet. I like Adam-12 better. The old 1950's Dragnet, though, the one that never gets aired, that was some gritty good stuff.

Get Smart lost to Hogan's Heroes. Surprised about that; Get Smart was always so popular for how it broke the mold.

Perry is still in the running. I was happy for it, but sad at the same time that The Fugitive wasn't better appreciated.

Emergency! won over The Saint. A bit surprised by that.

Gunsmoke lost to The Rifleman! I think that was biggest jaw-dropper. Maybe it's just because MeTV only shows seasons 12-20 of Gunsmoke, though. Some of the best episodes were earlier. Not that I don't like The Rifleman, but man, Gunsmoke is such a legend.

Wonder Woman lost to Batman. I love Batman's quirkiness. I don't think I could stomach what happens in the 1960s movie (people being broke down to powder?! Oh my gosh, NO. NO!), but the TV show is absolutely hilarious and adorable and always makes me smile. I love Wonder Woman too, though, and I felt it was the better show for when it tried to be serious. Both shows definitely have some cheese.

Since the poll is for MeTV viewers to pick which show they feel is the most memorable and they'll get a marathon of it, I hope the winner will be something good.

One thing I don't like is that if you picked a show that didn't make it, the site says "Your pick - wrong!" I'm sure they don't mean it this way, but dang, it sounds insulting, like that I'm wrong for liking one show better than the other.

Also, I had a weird dream about watching The Saint. Yes. I mentioned it over on Tumblr, but I think I'm crushing on Roger Moore from his Maverick and Simon Templar days.

I love Maverick. It broke the Western mold and is often humorous, but it's just not to the extreme that The Rockford Files is. Nor is it like the silly sequel Bret Maverick. I can't find any episodes of that to re-watch, but I did find a clip, and just from it I could tell that the Bret Maverick character certainly changed in some ways through the years. He seemed much more cynical and cautious in the sequel (sooo many guns, oh my gosh), but considering everything that happens to him in the first show, I guess it's not a surprise. Kind of sad, though. And he swears in the sequel show. Not that you wouldn't imagine the character would have sworn originally if TV codes had been more lax in the 1950s, but there's one episode where he specifically quips that he doesn't want to say a particular thing because it would be too much like swearing. Aww.

Bleh.

So I continue to deliberate over whether I want the Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie Build-a-Bear plushies.

I've actually been fairly interested in getting Rainbow after realizing how much she's grown over the seasons. And then as I said, I'm sure she's the one they'll retire first.

But then today she goes and proves that she can never fully get away from being rude. She was doing so well! Now suddenly she has to go and act insulting about Twilight's excitement over an exhibit. It's one of her worst comments in quite a while.

I was really mad at her in the morning over that. Later on I felt somewhat better, but I still don't know what to think about whether I want the plush.

I wish they weren't limited editions, because that makes me worried and panicky thinking that even though my feelings are all over the place right now, I might regret it later if I don't get them.

With Twilight, I love her so much and we usually see her good side over her bad, so it's easy to forgive her faults and love her in spite of them. Plus, sometimes she's hilariously adorable when she has a meltdown, like in Swarm of the Century when the Parasprites are tearing the town apart right as Celestia is coming for a visit. Twilight goes, "Okay, Rainbow Dash, distract them." Rainbow flies by being chased by them. "Great. Now, everybody else, build an exact duplicate of Ponyville over there. We have one minute." Then she breaks down and wails that they really are doomed. Poor Twilight.

With Rainbow, it seemed like for most of seasons 1 and 2, we mostly saw her bad side, insulting and arrogant, and it aggravated me so much that it wasn't easy at all to forgive her faults. There were only a handful of times I liked her in the early episodes. Then she seemed to really be changing in the latter part of season 2 and into seasons 3 and 4. She matured a lot. But that comment today ... ugh. Just ugh. That was such a backslide.

I suppose I could blame it on the writing, since it sure hasn't been consistent for some of the Ponies, like Fluttershy. But considering Rainbow Dash's personality and her past behavior, it's hard to know what to think.

Also, the original Maverick series is honestly really cute. We have Cozi TV now and they air it. I still don't think I'd like the sequel from the early '80's, although I was going to try it again and see how I felt. But I don't think I tend to like Westerns from the '70's and the '80's. They seem to be so silly, almost like they're making fun of the genre. I don't like Alias Smith and Jones (although I was going to try it again, too) and I don't like Bret Maverick (the sequel series, not the person).

Gunsmoke continued until 1975 and was pretty consistently serious. Sometimes too much so, honestly. I didn't like what happened in The Guns of Cibola Blanca at all. It seemed way too raunchy for the series, even though by the mid-seventies times were changing with what they would air on TV. And it was such a confusing mess. I got so fed up trying to figure out what was going on that I finally started fast-forwarding through the thing and only stopping at Richard Anderson's scenes.

Anyway, though, the original Maverick series is pretty adorable. It's a little tongue-in-cheek and sometimes there's shades of the kind of humor that would come later in The Rockford Files and Alias Smith and Jones, but it seems to be a lot more mild. And I like the character of Bret Maverick. He's amusing and definitely not your typical hero. But he's a pretty honest guy, really, unless he's showing up some cheaters who've been causing trouble.

I only caught part of an episode tonight, and I liked it as well as the other three I've seen, although it was a little sad too. At the end, Bret was commenting on how the guy with him had done all kinds of dangerous things, but had come out alive, was a hero, and would be rich. Bret was broke and leaving town and no one noticed or cared. He wondered if he was wrong about his life's philosophy.

I really loved one of the episodes last week, where he and his brother Bart were both trying to get hold of some money and there was only enough for one of them to get a share. I thought it would be one of those awful "everybody gets greedy and betrays everybody else into dangerous situations" episodes. That seems to always happen in the old Road movies and is one major reason why I just can't get into them. The characters are always either greedy or cowardly and betraying each other. I can't stand it and can't buy the idea of the characters really caring about each other.

But in this Maverick episode, the stuff with the brothers getting greedy was more playful and did not extend to getting each other into dangerous situations. And it seemed like it was mainly Bart carrying on (although Bret did a bit of it). But as soon as Bart actually got into real danger, Bret immediately came to help him instead of just letting him suffer and maybe get killed. And they decided to share what money they could get. So much squeeableness! And so very different from what I thought would happen! That definitely makes Maverick unique.

I hope to continue catching episodes where possible. Right now I can only catch it on Saturday nights, as on weekdays it airs at the same time as Ironside. And even though Maverick is cute, I like Ironside lots better.

Cheesiness.

I wonder why it is that I just can't get into The Rockford Files. It's an exciting and intense detective show, and I love detective shows. But I really only like The Rockford Files if there's someone guest-starring in it I love. Meanwhile, I watched a couple of episodes of Cannon and absolutely flipped over it. I adore it and have to see more.

I wonder if the difference has something to do with what seems to be the general approach to James Garner's projects. Are they all extraordinarily cheesy and silly? I know I thought his follow-up to Maverick, called Brett Maverick, was one of the stupidest shows I have ever seen. And I found Brett really quite insufferable. I wanted his friend to show him up and was annoyed when Brett came out on top. If the original Maverick show was anything like that, I would strongly dislike it too.

Jim Rockford is a much better character than Brett Maverick, but he's not a particular favorite of mine, either. And some Rockford Files episodes do come across as rather silly. Sticks and Stones was really quite ridiculous. A giant private eye organization deliberately trying to get the small fry P.I.s out of business so people will come to them instead? I heard it was a Watergate parody in some ways, which would make it more forgivable, but I still think it was pretty dumb. I really only like it for the character interaction. Vern St. Cloud is so lovably endearing. His other appearances weren't so flattering to his character.

Admittedly, I do write for Vern. I've brought him into my Perry fics, at least very occasionally. He's mentioned in The Broken Ties and actually appears in one of my missing scenes. And there's a Rockford Files fic I want to write sometime, with him and Jim forced to work together. There was a lot of missed opportunities for that on the series. Wikipedia gave the impression that they did work together, but after Sticks and Stones they really didn't.

In some way, it feels very wrong to write for the characters and show when I don't even really like the show. But that's how it is. I actually wish I could get more into the Rockford Files. I just plain find it tedious most of the time. I think it could have been done so much better. When I had a disc out to show Mom Sticks and Stones, I couldn't even get through the other three episodes on the disc. I half-watched one that had friendshippy things going on between Rockford and his policeman friend, but only briefly looked at the other two. I would have watched them all if Mom had been interested, but she didn't seem to be, very much.

I wonder if The Rockford Files also moves too slowly for me or something. It did seem like Cannon was a much more involved show. But there's exciting action things happening on The Rockford Files, too. So I just can't seem to fully pin down what my problem is.

I have nothing against James Garner, by the way. I've heard he's a very nice person and is gracious to the other cast members, crews, and fans. I like him fine. But man, his shows and his characters....

Has anyone else noticed an overabundance of cheesiness about James Garner's shows, or is it just me?
