I've made some edits to the previous post; upon thinking further I realized there were a couple of other answers to check off, plus, I wanted to say more on one of the Twilight Sparkle questions.

Here's a classic film era quiz.

1. Favorite classic Disney?

I’m going to assume that “classic” will refer to any time when Walt was alive. So for animated, Lady and the Tramp. I loved the story years before I ever saw the film. I bought novelizations and even scanned in a chapter book I rented from the library, so I would always have a copy. I only scanned the text, though, since we had a B&W printer, so alas, no pretty pictures. For live-action, That Darn Cat!, the 1965 original. Absolutely hilarious, crime-fighting, and an adorable cat. A perfect film!

2. Favorite film from the year 1939?

(Why 1939 in particular? Is there something extra-special about that year?) Probably The Wizard of Oz. I grew up on it and always found it very magical and special. I think the books are seriously messed up, to be honest, but I don’t think I could ever not love the movie.

3. Favorite Carole Lombard screwball role?

I … am not sure I’ve ever seen one of her screwball roles.

4. Favorite off screen couple? (It’s OK if it ended in divorce.)

I love it when I find couples who have stayed married all through the years, or couples who stayed married until one or the other died, even if it was an early and tragic death. Hmmm. I’m not sure I have one particular favorite. I’m not sure whether Simon Oakland and his wife would be considered “classic film era”. They married in the 1940s, but Simon didn’t come to Hollywood until the fifties and then was mostly in TV until about 1958.

EDIT: Also, of course Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.

5. Favorite pair of best friends? (i.e: Barbara Stanwyck and Joan Crawford)

Onscreen or off-screen? I remembering loving Bing Crosby and Bob Hope in Road to Utopia. I think that's my favorite Road picture; I didn't care too much for some of them because they all too often seemed to have the guys caring more about their own interests and survival than each other's.

Also, I like Sach and Slip from The Bowery Boys. Their caring for each other is evident in each and every film, even amid all the hat-hitting and name-calling (mostly on Slip's part).

And I like Sach and Duke from later in the series. They care about each other too; Duke is always genuinely upset if Sach ever gets hurt, no matter how much he might threaten to hurt Sach himself. Duke is still my favorite character aside from Jimmy Murphy's Myron, largely because of both his logic and his classiness. He seems higher educated than Slip, so it breaks my brain the few times the writers tried to make him a carbon copy by giving him the same speech pattern as Slip.

6. Favorite actor with a mustache?

I was going to say the guy who plays Captain Stottlemeyer on Monk, but this is for classic film era only, so hmmm. I like both Howard Keel and Clark Gable. It’s hard for me to imagine either of them without mustaches. Oh, and Keenan Wynn. And Ronald Colman and David Niven.

7. Favorite blonde actress?

Joi Lansing. And I don't mind Marilyn Monroe. I don't know; I think most actresses I like have darker hair, but it's honestly hard to tell in black-and-white. Sometimes the script will say their hair is blonde, but in B&W it looks more like light brown to me.

8. Favorite pre-code?

I’m not sure if I’ve seen enough pre-Code to judge. All of the Marx Brothers' films prior to A Night at the Opera were pre-Code, so I think I'll say The Cocoanuts. I remember particularly liking that one. Monkey Business too, but I'm not sure if I'd like that one as much if I saw it again now.

9. Which studio would you have liked to join?

Whichever studio my favorites were working for, haha. William Talman was with RKO in the early fifties, but I’m not sure if he was under contract. Both of his pictures with Robert Mitchum were for RKO.

10. Favorite common on screen pairing that SHOULD have gotten married?

Golly, I don’t think I’ve ever thought about this. After all, even if they have great chemistry onscreen, maybe they wouldn't have gotten along in real-life, or maybe they were already married to other people at the time, so it just doesn't seem like something I could feel comfortable answering even if I did think about it.

11. Favorite "I Love Lucy" episode?

The one with Hans Conreid, where they’re trying to learn how to speak proper English. LOL.

12. Out of these actresses which one do you like best: Lucille Ball, Ingrid Bergman, Natalie Wood, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Greer Garson, or Katharine Hepburn?

Audrey Hepburn. I love just about every film I've seen that she's made. There are some things about her as a person that disappoint me, but as an actress alone she is still one of my favorites.

13. Shadowy film noir from the 1940s or splashy colorful musicals from the 1950s?

Film noir, baby, all the way.

14. Actor or actress with the best autograph (photo preferred).

I don’t typically study autographs, to be honest. I like Pleasant Valley’s answer of Walt Disney; his signature is definitely awesome and memorable. I also like Simon Oakland’s and William Talman’s, but that be more bias than anything else.

15. A baby (or childhood, or teenage) photo of either your favorite actress or actor (or both, if you’d like.)

I've been thinking about that subject for the last few days, actually. I don't think I can find one. Wait, I'll look.... Nope, I don't see any.

OH WAIT! I found one after all! http://www.hourdetroit.com/Hour-Detroit/March-2012/One-Brave-Precedent/Talman%20family%20Tim%20Talman_cx.jpg William is on the left. Cute!

In fact, off-topic, but here's the link to the article it came from. Read, guys! It's just new this month. I'm so excited by this. William is still remembered and loved, and honored for his courage in being the first celebrity to speak out against the dangers of smoking. http://www.hourdetroit.com/Hour-Detroit/March-2012/One-Brave-Precedent/

Oh, Jimmy.

I hope I'm not going to have trouble getting reviews on chapter 2 of the Kolchak/YGO crossover. I was still hoping someone I know who likes both shows would review the first chapter, but I decided to post the second one yesterday instead of continuing to wait for him. Kolchak is really the main fandom; YGO is just a secondary one, with only two characters from the show appearing/planned to appear. But I still felt it needed to be in the crossover section, considering one of them is the main villain and the other is Kolchak's informant.

I also worried wondering if the guy I know who's familiar with both shows would think I was writing for the new Kolchak series in order to cross it with YGO, so when I put up chapter 2 I altered the story summary to try to make it clear that it's the original series.

And I re-watched Jimmy's first appearance on Knight Rider. The whole first season is available for free streaming through Hulu. LOL, he's so awesome, as always. I adore this part where he and a couple of other inmates at the county correctional facility are staging a breakout and, on the idea of one who has been dragged unwillingly into the escape, they start a food fight as a distraction. Jimmy's character Pink (yeah, I don't know either) flings food across the table at a guy and when he demands to know what's going on Pink says innocently, "You looked hungry." LOL, such classic Jimmy. It sounded like something Myron might have said.

Jimmy is the one with the much-too-innocent smile.

I finished tinkering with chapter 6 and put it on [livejournal.com profile] monkeesfic. When I put up the final installment, I'm going to use the WTH icon. It's bizarre.

I actually got some inspiration and have started jotting off a Bowery Boys blurb/scene between Duke and Myron. I never thought I'd be writing for them again, but it felt very comfortable, as was reading through the stuff I'd written for them five years ago. If I like it well enough when I'm done, I'll probably post it to the Bowery Yahoo Group.

I was thinking on how it felt alright to shift the time period to the present day. The Boys' films seemed to move ahead with the times. The fifties movies don't feel like forties movies, for instance. There's plot devices and ways of writing that are distinctly for each decade the films were made in. If they had continued making the films, they likely would have continued being modernized. Hence, it doesn't feel so odd to imagine the time period just being the present day instead. They likely could have had oddball adventures in the here and now while still keeping the spirit of the old films alive. I love how Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books, and Kolchak graphic novels, take place in whatever era they were written in.

I'm hoping to start work on the Kolchak/YGO fic today. I also may take on one of the few prompts at [livejournal.com profile] sharp_teeth that's for any fandom, once I can decide which one it should be written for. It would easily fit YGO or Kolchak or Tutu, or probably even The Monkees, if done right.

Also today, I must start catching up on people's Tutu fics.
ladybug_archive: (mickyandbabyface)
My little ghost plunnie exploded into a full-fledged, multi-chapter fic, and a very strange one at that. Now it's the Monkees discovering the ominous home, there's more than one malevolent spirit, and Baby Face was killed during twisted and unexplained circumstances, not a simple gang war. It will be explained later, but for now neither the readers nor the Monkees know what happened. Tony and the other gang members have come back to the house and are telling the Monkees to leave. They know that if the Monkees stay, the same disaster that befell Baby Face will come to them.

I'm trying to think on whom the disaster should start to befall, if any of them. So far I keep coming back to Davy. I'm not sure why I feel like it shouldn't be Mike. If it were Mike, the others would have to deal with figuring out how to save their leader. And that could be an interesting parallel since the gang was unable to save Baby Face. Maybe the more I write, the more right it will feel for it to be Mike as the victim.

There's far more paranormal things going on now than in the initial first draft, which featured only Baby Face as a vengeful spirit as a paranormal thing. It doesn't weird me out as much as that old RP where Tony was defeated by a Doom Reborn member and unwillingly worked with them under their control until he broke free and pushed Baby Face and the other gang members out of the Doom Reborn circle before it surrounded him and took his soul, but I'm still somewhat weirded out by the fic's concepts. I don't know, when the gangsters are such realistic characters and use guns and brute force and intimidation, I feel like paranormal goings-on ruin the realism. But the fic really wants to be written. It keeps coming. So I guess I'll keep writing until either I finish, stall, or am too weirded out to continue.

I'm thinking I may post the first chapter to the [livejournal.com profile] monkeesfic comm. It's much shorter than the chapters and parts I've been trying to post around lately.

... And I was wondering the other day if I could write for George and Lenny from Monkees in a Ghost Town. I just rediscovered that I did, once. They are the villains in an unfinished Bowery Boys fic I was writing. It looks like I didn't do too badly with their personalities.

...

Someone else is interested in and knows something about Jimmy Murphy. For once, there's a birthdate floating around for him. (1935.) This is new; Wikipedia never had anything on him before. They still don't have an actual article, but it is an improvement. I'm taking it a bit with a grain of salt, since it's not mentioned somewhere like IMDB.com, but it sounds fairly accurate.

And hold that thought, I found someone who has actually had some association with him! Now to hope my email goes through....

I decided I'll need to make more breaks for The Return of Baby Face Morales then I had originally. I just put up the first of the new parts in the Dreamworld group. I'm proofreading the whole thing a second time, so when I finish that I'll probably put up all the parts in rapid succession at the fic journal.

Monday or Tuesday I receive the Knight Rider disc from Netflix that has Jimmy's second episode on it. I'm thrilled; I've wanted to see that for five years. I loved his first guest spot on the series.

... And I'll probably recall the original reason for this entry after I give up and decide to post it.

Oh! I just remembered. Among Jimmy's guest spots was an appearance on the show Kolchak: The Night Stalker. Of course, out of all the creepy things on that show, Jimmy *had* to be in the episode that featured a headless biker killing people in like manner as he was killed ("Chopper"). It took some time before I got the courage to try it, but I don't regret it. In spite of the storyline, the execution was actually quite innocuous. And I just covered my eyes during the death scenes, so I don't know how graphic they were and I don't want to know. (Although I don't think they would have been very graphic.) Jimmy's character survived, as I remembered being told five years ago in a group for the series.

I really like the actor who plays Kolchak, Darren McGavin. I've seen him for years in the Disney film No Deposit, No Return (a classic comedy), and more recently, in that film with Jerry Lewis (The Delicate Delinquent?). I really like the Kolchak character, too. He's hilarious. And I love how he's a reluctant hero. I watched another episode of the show last night (Mr. R.I.N.G.) and plan to see more.

I think it's so neat that the series had a revival with that comic series! And it's updated the time to the present day without aging the characters, the same as Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books do. I may look into the comic series sometime.

I've been vaguely interested in the series for some time (ever since I first learned of it through Columbia House, which would have been fourteen or so years ago), and five years ago my interest only rose because of finding out about Jimmy's guest spot. It looks like he may have led me into another fandom the same as he did with The Bowery Boys.

Right now I don't have the spare money to keep up a Paid account, so I've switched to Sponsered and I had to go icon purging. XD; It was difficult, figuring out which ones to keep. And I had to make room for this one that I just did. I was looking at the Baby Face icon with the Getting Away with Murder lyrics, and I couldn't stop thinking how appropriate that would be for a Gin AMV or icon. So I found this manga picture that was perfect and made this.

And while I do think Gin is clever, as I noticed someone saying on FF.net, I also think it's a little disturbing to call him "cool." XD He's a ruthless assassin! But then, those types always collect fangirls. I think he's good-looking, and I love his hair, but he's definitely not a character I'd fangirl over. He will make a good foil for Baby Face, though.

Today I went to the Scottish festival. X3 I loved it! Local Scottish people set up booths for their clans, there were other booths with crafts and clothes and the like, and of course there was bagpipe music. They had a bagpipe marching band, actually. And there was a local singing group that came and sang Celtic songs. Here's their website: http://www.kindredvoices.net/ I'll definitely try to catch them if they perform in the area again. Which reminds me, I wonder if the Mason-Dixon Bluegrass Band's CD is out yet....

There was also some Scottish food. X3 I tried something that was like beef stew or a pot pie. I think they called it tatty pie. And I had some short bread too. Good stuff.

Going there also made me think more about my own heritage. I don't know if I have any Scottish ancestry (probably do), but I do know that I have a lot of Welsh.

Now I am going to write a little essay on Sach and Whitey's friendship. When it's done, I'll probably post it here. I love their friendship. It's so goofy and silly while being cute and innocent. The slashers would have a heyday with it, and they probably will, once the movies come out on DVD.

I'm just curious: for people who know about any of the characters whom I do essays on, do you think my essays come off logically and provide satisfying arguments, or do you think that I randomly decide things because I want them to be that way? XD It's true that I write essays expressing strong opinions that I dig up on the characters, but I hope that I back up my opinions with plenty of information from the book/movie/TV show/whatever it is.

I'm just musing over things because someone in The Bowery expressed the basic opinion that Duke chasing Sach with weapons is just slapstick comedy and that for whatever reason, they just didn't have him use the weapons, like the Three Stooges probably would have. XD I agree that it was played for comedy, but nobody does anything without a reason. Duke would have to have a reason for not using the weapons, and I believe that my view on why is consistant with information taken from the films. The idea that we don't need to think about the reason just because it's a comedy doesn't sit well with me. XD When I write about character relations, I have to have reasons for everything that they say and do.

After Elora showed me that excellent Princess Tutu AMV, I got intrigued and wanted to watch the show more than ever, so I got the first DVD from the library, watched it, and have digested about eight more episodes from YouTube the previous evening. XD Now I've seen all 13 episodes of the first season. 13 more to go.

I'm really surprised at how great it is. At first glance, it seems like a normal magical girl show. But it is quickly discovered that it is not. It's much better. The characters are extremely deep, and black and white blur into gray for both the good guys and the bad guys. The soundtrack is mostly classical music, and there's a lot of fairy tale and ballet influences. I bet Leonhard would love it. XD Fakir is definitely one of the best and most complex characters, but Rue is terribly intriguing too, and Mytho reminds me so much of Bakura. Drosselmeyer intrigues me in some way, too. And Ahiru is just cute.

I meant to watch some Tsubasa Chronicle episodes, but each episode of Princess Tutu seemed to relate to the main story (there weren't a lot of fillers at all) and each would end on a cliffhanger, so then I'd have to go on. XD;

I also finally watched The Phantom of the Opera. I saw it at Target on Saturday and bought it on a whim (along with an embroidered YGO baseball cap). It's an absolutely excellent film, and the acting and singing is wonderful. I do wish that they hadn't cut out the final verse of the title track, though, and of course I found the guy mooning Carlotta to be a stupid and unnecessary addition. I don't even think anyone could have gotten away with that during the time period in which the movie takes place.

Also ordered with the Princess Tutu DVD was the ninth volume of Twelve Kingdoms. It was excellent, as they've all been, and I really enjoyed the ideas expressed in episode #39. #40 was a filler sort of thing, but it was enjoyable and I'm looking forward to seeing the last DVD, even though it doesn't really have a connection with the main plot. I hope that it will continue the little story that was going on in #40.

On Monday I went to Wal-Mart to help with the groceries, and luckily, I didn't have to wander around for over an hour looking for Dad this time. (I swear, last week I was so frustrated that I was ready to write a Bowery Boys one-shot in which that happens to Sach and Duke and Duke is screaming at Sach after they finally find each other in the store, and Sach hadn't even heard the page because he'd been daydreaming. XD; But I calmed down and didn't write it.) Anyway, I bought this cool M*A*S*H shirt I'd seen there last week, green with the logo. It was available in black, too, but somehow I thought green looked more appropriate. I also got one of those newsboy type hats, which I got especially interested in because Whitey has one in the Bowery Boys films he's in. XD Then I found a big black floppy hat that reminds me of spies and such. If I had a trenchcoat to go with it, that would be perfect. And if they'd had one in red, I might still try to make a go of that Alucard costume.

After a hiatus from the doppelgangers while doing the mobster storyline in the RP with Aubrie, I'm finally developing a new angle for my doppelgangers. XD Now there's a Doppelganger Mafia. I don't quite know how that came to me, but it just seemed a natural direction for things to go in since their dimension is parallel to ours and has a lot of the same things. Aubrie's coming up with Yaminah's doppelganger, and it'll be so amusing when they meet. She's very dark, and smart, and among the high-ranking members. She also smokes cigars. LOL. Now I need to come up with a doppelganger mobster so that we can get things really rolling with this angle.

I finally drew a picture of my OC Sybil. XD; I hope I didn't give her long hair in an RP I did a while back, but if I did, it'll have to change, because I can only picture her with short hair now.

And here's that thing I've been writing on Duke, at least this is it until I decide what else to put. XD

Name: Stanislaus "Duke" Coveleskie

Age: Unknown; perhaps in his mid to late twenties

Memorable Quotes: "I'd like to bawl you out, but I haven't got the time!" --- Hot Shots

"You get those carpets cleaned or I'll cut your ears off! And that's no bull!" --- Hold That Hypnotist (Yeah, I was surprised to hear him say that in a movie from the fifties. XD; Another time I'm almost positive he said "Oh my God!" after accidentally punching Sach....)

"The next time I wanna listen to an idiot, I'll listen to myself!" --- Hold That Hypnotist

"Just remember, this man is here for a rest cure. If you don't cut it out, I'll be here for a rest cure!" --- Spook Chasers

"... ROCKHEAD!" --- Looking for Danger

"I know I promised to share everything with you, but I draw the line at the chopping block!" --- Looking for Danger

1. Ask me as many fandom-related questions as you can think of in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general.
2. There can be subparts to questions (but since I'm allowing multiple questions, you can just make them separate).
3. That's it. It can be as normal or odd as you like.

Aubrie is finally watching The Monkees, thanks to a torrent she found! XD She seems to like it too, and we are having an email discussion about the Alias Micky Dolenz episode. I'm glad that she's finally seen the point of origin for my mobster stories. ^^

The reunion wasn't really that worth going to. XD; There weren't many people there. But I did get to go to Borders (and Target and Deseret Book), so I can't complain too much. I bought Going My Way at Borders. The only DVD version is on a double-bill with Holiday Inn, which I could care less about, but eh. XD I also bought Mister Roberts and will be taking more pictures of Jimmy before long. And I got YGO Duelist #15, which is incredible. Seto is so awesome in it, and Marik and Rishid interact, and it's the start of the Yugi/Joey duel, which I love.

At Deseret Book I found the Clair Poulson novel I've been wanting, and I used the gift card I had to get it. I love his works so much! He used to be involved in law enforcement, so he brings that knowledge to his books, and he's a local LDS author, so he also brings in gospel principles and such. There's always a lot of suspense, and I love how it's counter-balanced with stuff about God and prayer and that sort of thing. ^^

I found an old movie on YouTube with Leo Gorcey in it! It's called Midnight Manhunt and it's fun. XD This guy gets murdered and there's all kinds of confusion as the body keeps being moved all around. Leo played a variation of his usual character, and did the classic malapropisms. If you go there and search for Leo Gorcey it will come up, as well as a hilarious music video featuring clips from the Dead End Kids, Little Tough Guys, and the East Side Kids films.

I've been reviewing Bowery Boys films over the weekend. XD It's fun, though these latest reviews are quite negative on the particular films I picked. I'm going to include the reviews here.

Triple Trouble vs. Jail Busters )

And this one:

In the Money )

As you can see, I over-analyze too much. XD But I love it! I've also been writing some stuff about Duke, but I don't know if I'm done with that yet. I've been putting together what we learn about Duke from the films, as well as my own idea of his backstory and how he possibly could be the East Side Kid "Stash."

Stuff

I showed that scene I wrote to Paul, and he got a kick out of it. ^^ I figured he'd enjoy it. He's been hoping for a while that I could write something more humorous with the Boys. I may use that as part of another fic I have some assorted blurbs for. The other blurbs are a lot darker (involving Sach and Duke found out by the mob and being beaten for information), but I'm becoming known for my dramedies. XD; M*A*S*H proved once and for all that a dramedy is highly possible.

Though some people don't agree. In one of my books about The Andy Griffith Show, the author compares it to other well-known comedies, including M*A*S*H. He addresses the fact that they killed off the Colonel Blake character and said that it was an unfunny way out of a casting problem. But he misses the whole point! It wasn't *supposed* to be funny. It was supposed to be dark and dramatic and tragic, because that's the kind of thing that happens in war, and M*A*S*H was not only funny, it was realistic, and it worked. That's why it was so great.

Tomorrow there's a family renuion type thing. Mom doesn't feel well enough to go, and Dad is hoping that I'll go with him. I don't really like those things much, because it seems like in general it's mass confusion and I don't have much to do or many people to talk to anyway. Plus, it'll be outside, during the peak heat hours. Blurgh. But if I go with him, he might take me to Borders on the way home. ^^ Plus, it's been a long time since the two of us have really gone and done anything together. Mom and I hang out by watching movies and verbal RPing, and Dad and I always used to hang out by going on errands and such together, but that hasn't been happening all that much as of late. XD; It's not just because of the moving, though, I don't think. It's been like this for a year or more, with a little journey back to the good old days at Christmastime. There's trips for groceries, of course, but that's not the same as the traipsing all over the county we used to do. Ah, I miss that. Anyway, I'm warming up to the idea of going more and more. I can take my notebook and a Star Wars book, after all. **is still reading that trilogy from Christmas.**

Here's something some of the people here may get a kick out of. XD It's a short scene I wrote after watching Bowery Bombshell again: Sach, Slip, and Duke talking, goofing off, and trying to decide which of them will go undercover as Baby Face Morales. I wrote this partially because I wanted to see how these characters might act under circumstances when they're all on good terms with each other. Slip and Duke don't appear in the fims together, and I've never written a scene before with them both interacting with Sach at the same time.

Now I can't seem to keep my mind on any of the stories I should be writing. XD Instead I'm doing blurbs. These are two from different parts of a considered story where Sach gets amnesia while he and Duke are being held hostage at a mansion in Switzerland. I couldn't resist toying with the idea. ^^; Amnesia in fics is too fun, even if it usually isn't handled in a completely realistic way.

Later I plan to write a blurb about when Harry had to shoot Baby Face, and another that will involve that crossover I've been thinking of, even though I think that would work better as an RP. Before I do anything much with that, I should test out how I write for those characters, after all.

Anyway, I know no one's familiar with these characters, but if anyone would care to review based on content and presentation, I'm much obliged, as always. XD

What pal?! )

And this angsty piece from near the end. . . .

Remember Me )

Oh well, I found some dramatic NewsRadio stories earlier, so I know I'm not the only one who like to put comic characters into dramatic/angsty situations. XD; I'm always afraid that people are going to throw rotten tomatoes when I do that. But I can't ever seem to stray too far from my favorite subjects, even though I really am trying to write a couple of Bowery Boys stories that're more lighthearted. **pokes yet two more of her multi-chapter projects.**
ladybug_archive: (valon_wildhearts)
**hops on to post this entry she was writing earlier.**

You know what I think would be fun? XD A crossover story or RPG with the new TMNT and the X-Files. I know it probably sounds absurd at first, but think of this angle. Bishop and CSM could form an alliance to try to stop alien colonization. On Saturday I was watching some more of the tape Aubrie recorded for me during the time when I didn't have access to the TV (I've been watching some every Saturday), and I found an episode that opened with a flashback of Bishop being abducted by aliens and tested on, and it showed how that was largely influencing his obsessiveness over getting the aliens stopped. I don't know, I've always found Bishop to be a very fascinating character and one of the best TMNT antagonists. Same with CSM on the X-Files.

I've been thinking a lot about the things I would change in the X-Files storyline in general. As I said, I think it started going downhill as early as season 5, but there always have been good things in each season. I even like Doggett and Reyes. I don't think they were the downfall of the show, per se; I think it was more Chris Carter's writing angles in general and his arrogance that it could continue for years no matter what happened to the cast.

Anyway, of the main things I'd have happen (or not happen), there would be these:

---The Lone Gunmen would not die.
---Admittedly, I probably wouldn't have Krycek die either. I never have liked him, but eh, he is a good villain.
---I'm debating over what I'd have happen to CSM. XD; Part of me wants to say that I wouldn't have him get thrown down the stairs by Krycek at all, but another part thinks that maybe he did but he'd made a deal with someone (like with Jeremiah Smith in the past) and that person healed him (he'd been pretty sick before being pushed at the end of Requiem). In any case, I'm figuring that what happened in the show's finale never happened.
---Actually, I figure that nothing in the show's finale happened at all. ;) I think that was a crummy way to end everything.
---Doggett and Reyes would be around, but I wouldn't have Mulder get fired from the FBI. Maybe I'd have it be a temporary suspension, and things would get resolved.
---I don't know that the events of season 9 would happen at all, at least not in the same ways. XD; Mulder wouldn't flee at the beginning of it, for one thing.
---I don't know what I'd have happen with William, either. On the one hand I'm thinking that Scully would not adopt him out. On the other, I'm thinking that she might never have had him at all.
---I do know that I would have Jeffrey survive being shot, but he would not have ended up horribly deformed due to being experimented on, as was shown in season 9.

I love how dark and gritty the Dead End Kids' films are. XD; They're certainly a far cry from how they ended up a decade later as the Bowery Boys, and it's really neat that they can pull off both comic and dramatic acting so well. My favorite DEK film by far is Hell's Kitchen. It's very, very powerful and poignant. Bobby Jordan's character dies, but I think it had to be that way in order to have the full effect of things. It's about a shelter for wayward boys and the way Mr. Krispan runs it with an iron fist, forcing the boys to go without meals for days or even locking them in the walk-in freezer when they've done something he doesn't like.

I was briefly talking about the film with Lizzie the other day, when she was mentioning that she liked Matilda. I never have cared for it myself, and I mentioned that I thought the subject matter wasn't handled in a serious way and that I thought the way they did it was silly. I said that if one wanted to see a cruel schoolteacher handled in a serious way, Hell's Kitchen was definitely the way to go. Actually, now that I think of it, both the villain in Matilda and Mr. Krispan are more like principals/superintendants, but eh. XD;

For the last while I've had various thoughts about Slip and Duke in my mind, and now came the time when it all came to a head and I had to write it all down. XD I'm rather pleased with this essay, and now that I believe it's done, I really should get back to Prisms.

Slip & Duke )

Aubrie and I are continuing to have the mobsters around in our role-play. X3 Right now they're in Domino, looking for the Munger mob and hiding out to let the L.A.P.D. think that Baby Face really is dead. First Vince was attacked by the wizards and Harry blamed Baby Face for it, because Baby Face had sent Vince out and also because Baby Face had attacked the wizards in L.A. Then Kennedy attacked and Baby Face got hit with a dart, and even though he doesn't have magic, it affected him badly and he ended up going out of control. He eventually had Tony pinned to the ground and was trying to choke him to death, and Harry became so panicked that he shot Baby Face and apparently killed him. Of course Baby Face didn't really die, but now he's furious thinking that Harry shot him on purpose in light of how angry Harry was earlier. I love it! It's so intense. I'll have to write some kind of fic based on this. And Aubrie plays Vince brilliantly!

Oy. XD;

I haven't posted here in a long time. The reason is mainly because most of what I want to say involves the Bowery Boys, or their predecessors the East Side Kids, and no one here knows about them, so I post my thoughts at The Bowery Yahoo Group instead. XD;

I love this icon. X3 Aubrie made several really great ones with Baby Face and Tony, but this is my favorite.

I've really got both her and DSM hooked on the mobster characters. XD DSM has created her own mob of OCs and is writing a story about how Tony and Alice met, and Aubrie wrote a one-shot/blurb about when Baby Face's mentor was shot and killed. Aubrie and I are also finishing up an RP arc in which Yaminah meets Baby Face-tachi. It's great. X3

I had my official graduation ceremony last Thursday. Everything went really well, and I sang a combo of One Alone and The Desert Song. It was fun and I really enjoyed it, though the whole experience was rather bittersweet because it made me feel more like an adult, which is great, but which also sends me into nostalgia. XD I know change is inevitable, and I both welcome it and don't like it at the same time, because I know that while I'll have a lot of great new experiences, I'll probably never have the old ones again that I loved. For some reason, I especially had that sense when I bought the Capsule Monsters DVD and the X-Files movie at Wal-Mart afterward. (I wasn't planning to get the latter, but I found it for $5.50, so I figured what the heck.)

Capsule Monsters was actually pretty good. It was like the RPG trilogy when they had to rescue Kaiba, and there is a villain, manipulating things from the shadows. Even though I miss a lot of the characters, I find it kinda fun to watch an arc with just the four original friends (plus Yugi's Grandpa and Yami Y, of course). I'm anxious to see what happens in the next installment. ^^

... Bad Guys from Bugsy Malone is too addicting of a song. XD; It amuses me terribly, and it's got a great beat. I love the choreography too.

I can't believe it, but I've been having more of my random Christmas moods over the last few days. This is the earliest it's ever got me. Before, the earliest was in late August. Perhaps part of the reason is because I want to set part of an East Side Kids story during Christmastime. Another part may have been influenced by the movie Going My Way, which I got because Stanley Clements has a big part in it. Other than Jimmy Murphy, Stanley is my favorite of the Bowery Boys/East Side Kids actors.

The East Side Kids are younger than the Bowery Boys and are more wild and rambunctious, while still being basically good people. XD I enjoy their films too, though the Bowery Boys are my preference. Stanley Clements' character in that is called "Stash" (which, incidentally, is one of Stanley's real nicknames), and in the first of his movies, Smart Alecks, he imitates the leader Mr. Muggs a lot. He has a hat pinned up like his and sometimes repeats what he says or adopts his poses. However, in the other two movies he's in, he does not imitate Muggs and seems more older and mature. I want to write a story mostly about him and the experiences he had that changed him.

I also had the random idea that maybe Stash could be Duke when he was younger. I know it doesn't seem likely at first glance, but Stash does have some of Duke's mannerisms (though that's likely just because they're Stanley's own mannerisms), and there's the whole name thing. Stanley's real name is Stanislaw, which is a variation of Stanislaus, which is Duke's real name, and I already mentioned that "Stash" is really one of Stanley's nicknames, so it seems that it could just as easily be one of Duke's.

XD; The X-Files season 6 has too many "shipper" things. Suddenly everyone seems to be thinking that Mulder and Sully are a couple. When something starts being shoved down my throat repeatedly, that's usually when I really start disliking it. I love the pairing, as long as it's like it is on the show, with the emphasis on their deep and meaningful friendship. I do not like it after things really start going downhill. I don't like the idea that they eventually did end up in bed together, as most fans believe that they did, nor do I especially like the idea of Scully's ensuing pregnancy. (I also do not like the changes to CSM around season 7, nor do I like that he seems to have really died in the show's finale. And I also do not like killing off the Lone Gunmen. Come on, they were great!) I do, however, like the idea of Mulder eventually being abducted by aliens and finally being returned in a death-like state. I remember one person was starting a role-play from around the end of season four. That's about when things started basically jumping the shark. Maybe I'll try to find that RP and observe what's happening in it, if it's still going on.

For the last several days, Prisms has been on hold because I've been working on a Bowery Boys one-shot. The idea would not leave me alone, and it finally came to a head after I watched Spy Chasers. It's kinda dark, involving Sach accidentally shooting Duke, and I'm not sure I'll post it at The Bowery. XD; I have, however, showed it to a couple of the friends I've met there, and they've enjoyed it and made suggestions. I still need to determine if I want an epilogue type scene and if Slip and Duke should converse before Sach talks to Duke near the end. But it never fails. No matter how lighthearted a series may be, I can't go for long without coming up with dark and serious ideas. Of course, the Boys' earlier movies were more in the dramedy style that I love so much, and I don't think I've strayed into something terribly unbelieveable for them.

I've ended up writing with all of the gang there. Slip and Duke both seem to try being the leader at once, because they're both too stubborn to back down. LOL. Writing for Slip is an adventure. I have to learn things about the English language in order for him to "moider" it the way he does. I love his malaprops. XD And I have Whitey and Butch there as well. They were the original background Boys, along with Chuck, and I love them too. Basically, I want to capture the flavor of the older movies while including the later characters Duke and Myron, and Mike Clancy (as played by Percy Helton, not Dick Elliot).

I'm going to post my Bowery review of Fighting Trouble, because it's interesting to me due to characters behaving differently than usual and I don't want to rewrite my thoughts for the entry:

Fighting Trouble )

I took 136 pictures from Crashing Las Vegas. XD; Oy. But Jimmy was in almost every scene, so there were a lot of pictures to take.

Aubrie made a Tony colorbar. X3 **purrs.** It's great. Once I post this, I'll upload it and then I'm off to watch more Bowery Boys!

That guy still has some tapes left. A couple of other members claimed some more, and I've claimed the rest. X3 It's really a great deal. He just wants to be rid of them and all I have to pay is S&H costs.

I took a bunch of pictures from Jimmy's second appearance on The Dick Van Dyke Show and put them on the website. XD; Before long I'll need to open a second website to continue housing the picture galleries.

I've been pondering over how Tony and Vince end up on friendly terms. Right now in Prisms, they decidedly are not. XD They're very suspicious of each other, and I think Vince is somewhat jealous of Tony as well, because of the interest Baby Face has taken in him. Vince doesn't trust Tony, and he doesn't understand why Baby Face is having Vince continue to work with Tony on the gambling ring to catch the stalkers when they (Baby Face-tachi) know that Tony is a cop. Vince takes to following Tony sometimes, and well, this blurb towards the end of chapter 6 was the end result of these ponderings.

Deny )

I still haven't quite figured out what Baby Face's agenda is, or why he did want Vince to continue assisting Tony in chapter 5. Perhaps he just wanted for them to keep an eye on Tony, and knew that if he was busy going after the stalkers, he would not pay any attention to the gang. I really think the Cigarette-Smoking Man was a large influence on the way I portray Baby Face when it comes to his philosophies and secret agendas and such.

Speaking of CSM, or rather, The X-Files in general, I think it started jumping the shark in season 5. They seemed to switch to a more lighthearted format save for the episodes that relate directly to the "mytharc" thing, and there also seems to be less episodes that do relate. I haven't been too impressed with season 5 overall, save for a few episodes, and season 6 hasn't made a big impression on me either, so far. I don't mind an occasional lighthearted episode, but there seems to be quite a few all at once and I think my dad's getting fed up. XD; I'm anxious for more drama and action myself.

I have my site up and running! http://www.angelfire.com/planet/jimmymurphy I've already been submitting applications to webrings, too. I figure, why wait? It's fun making the galleries and such, and I'd definitely do this even if it wasn't meant as a beacon, but still, I can't deny that I hope I'll catch the attention of anyone who may know how to contact him.

I think part of the reason why I'm so obsessed with this is because I never had the chance to do it for my other favorite character actor, Roy Stuart. I still can't, because I can't cap from my Gomer Pyle videos. But I have the capabilities to take pictures of Jimmy from many of his appearances, so I figure I'm going to milk it for all it's worth.

Part of my order from Movies Unlimited came on Friday. This was the movie California, a little-known swashbuckler type film from 1963. It's about the struggle for statehood in California, and well, you guessed it: Jimmy's in it. I went nuts screencapping from it yesterday. It's a great movie in and of itself (I love swashbucklers), but having Jimmy there certainly didn't hurt, either. X3

Movies Unlimited also sent a sample catalog, and while reading it over, I got interested in a couple of the East Side Kids films listed. They're having a spring clearance sale, so I went and bought three of them for $5.99 each, even though I shouldn't have. But I couldn't resist. (The East Side Kids, incidentally, was the name the Bowery Boys used in the early forties. And before that, they were the Dead End Kids. Their most famous roles are probably in the gangster movies Dead End and Angels With Dirty Faces.)

And thank God, the thing I ordered for Mom came just in time for Mother's Day. **relaxes.** I just hope it's a good quality picture. I'm going to test it and see before I give it to her.

I watched an episode of Knight Rider a bit ago. What a fun show. Typical eighties fare, kinda cheesy, but fun and good-natured. It was produced by the same guy who did the original Battlestar Galactica. Knight Rider looks like it was made on a bigger budget, though. XD; I watched episode #7, in which Jimmy plays an inmate at a county correctional facility who wants to bust out with another guy. This other guy is upset because someone who's in there wrongly (one of the main characters, Devon Miles) knows about their plans, and he says Devon either has to escape with them or they kill him, and Jimmy's character doesn't look pleased at either option. XD He was willing to accept Devon's word that he wouldn't tell anyone about the escape, but the other inmate was not. So Devon was forced to go with them. As usual, I recognized Jimmy immediately, even though this was made in '82. He has quite a big part in the episode, and I will be going screencap crazy again very soon.

YGO was great earlier. It was the calm before the storm episode immediately prior to the Ceremonial Battle, and the bikers made their cameo appearances! And of course, we got to see the Ishtars again. XD It's sad that there's only four episodes left, though. Even if by some chance I like GX, it could never begin to take the place of the original.

I started writing the beginning of a random Bowery Boys story that takes place shortly after the last movie, In the Money. So far it's just been Chuck trying to write a letter to Myron (who was absent in the final two films), and wondering why he's been so cross lately. And I decided that Myron is Chuck's cousin. It seems like Chuck never has been close to any of the Boys, but when Myron's there, they kinda pal around. That's enough material to give me a basis for a story. XD

That friendship is another element that wasn't really explored in Spook Chasers. While I still love that film, it really didn't do the background characters much justice at all. Blinky had some good screentime, but Chuck and Myron were pretty much gypped. I've realized that after watching films like Hold That Hypnotist (my favorite Myron film) and Crashing Las Vegas, in which they got a lot more screentime.

I watched the last two films earlier. Up in Smoke was a weak attempt at doing a Faust script, but I didn't think they handled it well. They made too much light of the subject matter and there wasn't enough good drama, like there might have been had it been done in earlier years. However, there was one thing that made it worth seeing: Duke finally showed some emotion! He was appalled during one scene where he accidentally punched Sach thinking he was a crook ("Oh my gosh! I hit my best friend!"), and then later, when it looked like Sach was going to be taken by the Devil, Duke was almost in tears. Usually he has such a big chip on his shoulder and is always yelling at Sach about something, so it was just kinda nice to see him show that he really does care.

In the Money was better, plotwise, and it reminded me of some of the earlier films.

Actually, instead of typing things all over, let me post the mini-reviews I did at The Bowery of the films I've recently seen:

Hail, Hail, the Gang's All Here )

I definitely see the difference in quality between the older films and the more recent ones, and while the older ones are generally better plotwise and character-personality wise, I'll always be fond of the later films too. And I'll always like the characters of Duke and Myron, even though most of the fans couldn't care less.

I need to get back to Prisms. I think maybe my block is finally ending and that I can finish chapter 5 soon, but now I've also got another plotbunny involving Baby Face being approached by some kinda terrorists who want him to help them out and him getting annoyed because he isn't like them. Then later, he and the gang end up involved deeply in the whole mess and are recruited by the government to help them catch the terrorists. Blame the third to last episode of The X-Files, Season 5, in which Mulder is working as a double agent and is trying to bring a group of terrorists to justice. XD;

Most of the day I've been working on this: http://www.angelfire.com/ut2/daydreambelievin/bios/babyface.html I like how it turned out. XD And as usual, I came up with some new stuff while in the process of writing it.

And I've been having trouble with the BlazeDVD program, so I emailed the Support people and I got a reply back, telling me how to fix it! It worked, too, so I was able to cap about 28 pictures from Jimmy's guest appearance on Gidget. X3 That pleases me highly. I probably mentioned this, but I'm planning to open a little tribute website and have lots of screengrabs from every appearance I can get my hands on. I won't be able to cap from his Gomer Pyle appearance or from The Good Guys and the Bad Guys, though. XD; They're only on videos and not DVDs.

Here's one of the pics I took:

Sample Pic )

This one guy at The Bowery was getting rid of his VHS tapes of the movies because he has them on DVDs now, and I was able to get some of them from him. :) Among them was Looking for Danger, the last of the five movies Jimmy was in. It was very different from the others, and I liked it less, but it was still fun and it may grow on me. XD It involved this guy from the War Department wanting to know what happened to a pot that Duke had when he was in the Army. Thus, Duke begins fabricating a hilarious story about how he and Sach and the others were heroes during WWII, which is proven false at the end. The boys couldn't have even been in the Army during WWII. (I have the theory that Duke's dad had the same name and he was the one in the Army.) Some of them, like Blinky and Myron, would have been too young, and I do think that Sach and Duke are supposed to be younger than their actors were at the time (though, if they're the same age as their actors, then they at least could have been in WWII. Stanley Clements actually was).

In the movie, Jimmy gets to use another foreign accent (he played a British singer on Gidget) when his Myron character, Blinky, and Chuck play German soldiers in order to rescue Sach and Duke when they end up in prison. Myron is the spokesperson, and he does a bang-up job. XD

I decided that Myron was probably the one who came up with the scheme. He seems to be the smartest of the background characters, and somehow I can't picture Blinky or Chuck thinking of the idea. Also, in Hot Shots, there's this amusing part where the police officer asks Sach for the brains of the group and Sach says, "Don't look at me!" "I wasn't. I asked for the brains!" And Sach points to Myron. XD

One thing I wonder about is why Myron was so crabby in Spook Chasers and Looking for Danger. He wasn't like that at all in his three earlier films. He definitely thought Sach could be an idiot, but he said so silently, by doing the classic eye-roll and such, instead of verbally chewing him out the way Duke does. And in Looking for Danger, Myron snaps at Blinky too! One of these days I'll have to write a story explaining Myron's crankiness. XD

I also watched Blues Busters, which was another fun little film, and sweet too, with moments of friendship cuteness. I do wonder why the authors of The Films of the Bowery Boys said that Slip didn't have as many violent mannerisms in the film. He seemed to, to me. XD; And the background boys (in that film, Chuck, Whitey, and Butch) got to do a dance number. I wish that Myron could have been involved with one in one of the films he was in. Jimmy has danced professionally on the stage.

Paul sent me some of the detailed reviews from the book I was talking about, and included with the Xeroxed summaries was a little bit of information about Jimmy. Now I have two more movies to find with him in them. One is a Jerry Lewis comedy that I've already ordered, The Delicate Delinquent, and the other is another rare movie called Born to be Loved. I also learned that, as I suspected, his character is killed by the vampire in Curse of the Undead, the Wild West vampire movie. XD; So I dunno if I wanna watch that one or not. **laughs.**

-__- This is annoying! The box for the LJ entries now stretches off the screen and I have to horizontally scroll to see the rest! I abhor horizontal scrolling!

Anyway, here's a quiz I got from Joleen:

This is how it works: Comment on this entry and I will give you a letter. Write ten words beginning with that letter in your journal, including an explanation what the word means to you and why, and than pass out letters to those who want to play along.

My letter is "P." This should be interesting. XD You know, I realized a while back that my favorite words start with B. Burrow, blanch, beam, and something I just forgot. XD; EDIT: blissful.

1. Peter. Not a word, but a name. XD; Joleen used this with "D", so I'll follow suit. Peter most often refers to the blonde Monkee, but occasionally it makes me think of Peter Gunn, the private eye with the awesome soundtrack. XD Seriously, I must buy the CD of that show's music. It just plain rocks. And the why I think of these characters? Because I just plain like them. Peter Tork's sweet and kind and gentle, and Peter Gunn is cool. X3 I can see that the "why" part of this quiz may stymie me a bit.

2. Piano. The instrument I play. To me, it means beautiful and relaxing, because it is. XD;

3. Plushies. Soft and cuddly and furry. I love soft things!

4. Paperback. A softcover book, because I love to read. **has a million books around, most of them in the process of being read.**

5. Pop. A kind of music I don't much care for in general, though there are exceptions.

6. Princess. To me, it means "Princess of Duelists," a friend of mine from Janime's.

7. Prayer. Talking to Someone Who fully understands.

8. Play. It can either mean "play music" or "role-play", both of which are activities that I love.

9. Pencil. What I use to draw with, and to write with, when I'm using my notebook. Drawing and writing are two of my passions.

10. Phone. What makes a ringing noise and which usually annoys me, and yet I couldn't live without it. XD It keeps me connected to the Internet. ^^

Now for a couple of blurbs. First, I was watching The Devil and Peter Tork the other day, and I got this weird idea. Remember the short story in which Baby Face seemed to die? Well, now I had the idea of him being on trial in Hell's Court. Ruby wants him to be given a second chance, and the other mobsters and the Monkees are the witnesses for both sides. And of course, Mr. Zero would be involved, trying to make certain that Baby Face is condemned to Hell because of his crimes. I only have the opening scene written, because I'm not sure I'll actually write this story, but I'll post it here and see what everyone thinks.

Witness for the Prosecution )

Also, I have been working on this scene here for some time. It's for a later chapter in my story This Just Doesn't Seem to Be Our Day, and so there is a spoiler warning for those who are reading it. I've been adding a little more today and I think I'm done with it now.

Evil Microchips )

It's amusing, how amusing Myron is. XD One wouldn't know it just from watching Spook Chasers, but he really can be funny in ways other than his silent reactions to situations. It was the (empty) gravy dish that he jokingly put on his head in Hold That Hypnotist, which I hadn't realized before, and he was singing a little bit in that scene too. I couldn't make out what he was singing, but he has a great singing voice. X3 Then later, when Sach is hypnotized into thinking he's Horatio guarding the bridge, and the others are trying to sneak past him by pretending to row a boat, Sach shoots and the imaginary boat springs a leak. XD The others tumble to the floor and Myron yells, "Man overboard!" I love that guy.

Crashing Las Vegas finally came today and I immediately watched it. It was Slip's last film, so I finally got to see what he was like. I love the way he mixes up his words. XD That's one of my favorite verbal comic gags. Personality wise, I can see that they did try to make Duke somewhat like him, as they both have a tendancy to threaten Sach when he gets everyone in trouble or just plain does something foolish, but Slip doesn't have the same kind of chip on his shoulder that Duke has. He's also less polished, more "rough", and does some things that I can't picture Duke doing, as Duke seems more refined. XD I love them both, really, but I'm used to Duke. Slip seems to have more of a tendancy to show when he's worried, which is cute, but I also like characters who worry and care but don't admit to it, which is how I imagine Duke to be.
