Well, seeing Schrank described as an out-and-out villain was the last straw. I wrote up an actual defense/essay/analysis of him and put it in
hated_character. But I think I'll be surprised if anyone there knows what I'm even talking about. If anyone here wants to read, it's here:
http://hated-character.livejournal.com/429106.html Some things are, of course, things I've mentioned here already. But I go more in-depth in the essay and try to cover all possible angles.
It was strong on my mind when I wrote it yesterday, so much so that I had a dream involving Schrank. And I had brief thoughts of trying to pick up that fic and finish it for that prompt today on Amnesty Day at
31_days. I doubt that will happen; I don't have the steam anymore. I'm thinking more and more that when I do pick it up, however, I will use Ladyamberjo's previous suggestion (which I had thought about myself before she mentioned it). Somehow, I can picture it happening to the luckless Schrank: While he is unable to get through to any of the various gangs and gang members by any of his efforts, him being shot sends the shooter into throes of horror and the kid gives up being in the gang. It's kind of encouraging and discouraging at the same time.
I have been most unproductive. I watched the Bonanza episode Thunder Man and decided that William Poole is even more disturbing than Mel Barnes. I'm kind of surprised that dark episode is included among my local PBS station's rotation. It will air at the end of next month, and I watched it today to see if I want to try to record it then. And I think I probably do. It's also notable for being the only time so far that I've heard Simon Oakland sing.
Then I watched Simon's guest spot on Black Saddle, marveled at his ability to play every role he's given so believably, and wondered what had been cut from the episode, as what I found was only about twenty minutes. Five or six minutes were probably gone from it.
Then I watched the Hawaii Five-O episode The Reunion, loved it, made plans to watch more of that series later, and moaned over the non-ending. Frank Epstein had been convinced throughout the episode that a Japanese businessman was the man who had tortured him and two others during WWII. Everything seemed to say otherwise, but at the end he was proven right, and the creep tried to taunt Frank into shooting him, as Frank had wanted to do for twenty-five years. McGarrett tried to talk Frank out of shooting, saying it would be cold-blooded murder. And it cuts off before we know what he did! Aurgh. I guess it's too much to hope that fans have written endings to the episode. I know how I want it to end, but I'd like to see other fans' views on it too.
And someone put my amnesia fic on Story Alert! That makes me happy, but I'm still not satisfied. Something is wrong with the chapter; I can just feel it. I put it up anyway hoping someone could tell me what the problem is, but the only review so far is very pleased with it and found no flaws.
